ok well im in grade 11 so im asking now in order to save some skrilla for when the time comes. is it a good idea to take a year off after high school and travel n shit? im feelin a NZ sesh for a few months after high school. however, i feel like i might lose the little (very little) bit of work ethic i have now. i get work done and shit so i know ill graduate but still, would it be a good idea? has anyone done this? wwell... obv people have done this but how have you reacted to it?

I'm on a year off right now actually. I cook for Telluride and get a free pass. It's actually a really sweet deal. Taking a year off has been a really good decision so far.

well i wanna go straight to university/college after im done this year but my boyfriend whose already started his first year in university told me to take a year off because its stressful. He's taking Human Kenetics and i wanna take Journalism...so i can see a difference in workload. But hes almost like FORCING me to take a year off because hes that serious that its hard.

my advice is, if your ready to go university when you reach grade 12, then go for it. dont listen to people who say "take a year off, make money, travel" it definitely sounds fun and all but if your ready, get it over with and then travel you know? I feel so ready to take on college or university so i want to go straight into it. I think if i took a year off i'd be thrown off track and get used to not doing homework and shit and i don't want to delay my life like that.

It all just depends on how much will power you have, what you want to do, and how ready you feel to do it. Good luck!

or you could enroll in a college with a flexible schedule and do some study abroad things/ take time off. Like i just took the fall off and did some volunteer work and traveling in south america. It was fucking sweet. Definitely worth it in the long run. Gives you such a different aspect of a different culture. Travel if you want, but definitely still go for a degree unless you are either ready to a) work in mcd's your whole life or b) are one of those insanely smart people who can start businesses without going to college and make millions

i started this year off with the idea i wouldnt do any school until next year but shits too hard to do on my own, rent $650, food, cable/internet, gas, partying, bills, tickets, everything shit adds up quickly until I couldnt take it anymore. After dropping like 10gs to let me live up here my parents toldmethey wouldnt pay for "a ski vacation" anymore which makes sense. cuz I realized how much easier it is to take just 2 simple courses get above a B average and have my parents pay for everything... just registered for some classes next semester. A lot easier than working a shitty $8 an hour job and selling weed just to bearly have enough to pay for your rent, having no time to party and ski.. Real life is pretty ill but theres a reason kids go to college cause supporting yourself right out of high school is super stressfull. And im not one of those kids who can work 10-5 at Shaws... fuck that id rather live on the streets than waste my time standing at a counter and be miserable. I have bigger plans and imalso real lazy about shit i dont enjoy doing

school can be pretty gay at times but it really lets you have an extended vacation in life... if you find some baller setup that lets you live comfortably for a year and just work and ski then thats chill but up here its not that easy , im down to write some essays and shit sometimes so i can have the time to figure out how to make the money iwant

i really really really want to take a year off after high school too. but i just don't think i could do it, as far as go back to school and stuff after, especially if i was having fun and ski bumming it. i just don't have the work ethic, i really hope as i mature i get that being i'm only a sophomore because it just seems like something i need to do in life...idk yet. still got a lotta time to think.

coincidentally, im working at mcdicks right now. lol. yeah i think ill probably go straight to college after high school. seems easier to not have to pay rent and shit, plus i should save money for some wheels first instead of vacation. thanks for the advice guys.

ok, not to bash college or anything, im planning on going, but i want to point out that just because you dont go doesnt mean youcant make perfectly decent money, and lead a happy life without working at mcd's, My dad and my cousin are both mechanics (one diesel, one car) and the both make pretty good money with no college degrees, and not bad hours, but you have to like what youre doing, and you have to work your ass off, if you are willing to work, you can go pretty far, it all depends on what you like

Yeah, a lot of kids parents make decent money and didn't go to college (mine didn't go to college and make 6 figures.) However the reality is that our generation is a lot more educated of a workforce. The number of college students has increased dramatically and anymore an AA is equivalent to a high school diploma 30 or 40 years ago. I'm in my third year at a university majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. As far course work goes it doesn't get much harder. I still have time to ski every weekend, party, have a part time job, and volunteer at a hospital.

Anyway if you want some advice go straight to college. If you get there you'll know right away if its gonna work out for you or not, if it does and you want to work just don't enroll the next quarter and only work.

My friend's dad didn't go to college, but he has a car shop and he lives in this really sweet house with three lakes surrounding it. It's really dope cuz it's in this low population town and we can always fuck around at his house and do shit cuz his dad's real chill and doesn't really care what we do.

nah thats not actually that chil ll that house is probalhy woprth $100 low poluilatiopn haha go to college kid

I took a year off and thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Best 5 months of my life, in addition to the best decision i have ever made.

I went to college becasue I thought I would never get around to it if I didn't do it right away, and everyone told me I would be nothing without an education. I really fucking hate being in school now and can't wait untill I am out, every single day I wake up and hate the fact that I have to go through another shitty day at college and I am constantly considering dropping out or taking a break.

My point is do what makes you happy and not anyone else, if you feel like packing up and moving somewhere do it, if you want to be a bum do it, dont do somethig that you will regret later

u guys are just pussys think about it yourreally getting paid $200 an hour to do your homework u know how it is to slang bangs friday night so you can pay yourrent? nawu dont

drop out when you figure out how to make that paper until then suck it up

im gonna do that after college. but after i buy my car (this summer) im gonna save my money from then untill out of college so i dont run out of greens.

living on your own and providing for yourself can only increase your work ethic (in my opinion)

however if you save up like 5 grand and then bum off that for a year your work ethic will most likely be tarnished. even if you're not working, just stay busy and you'll be fine to go back to school

I do and my attitude towards life basically if it doesn't appeal to me to not bother with it, which is why I am surprised I am at college in the first place.

bro, taking a year off is the best thing you can do, seriously take the time off and enjoy yourself being free! I took a year and a half off and it was amazing to say the least! I'm back in college now (as of last fall) and i feel so much better about going to school than i used too, (i actually like it now and have good grades again). If you don't take some time off you just get burnt out. Move away, travel, get yourself out in this world and make some life changing experiences (and memories) for yourself! I guarantee you won't regret it!

yeah I would say take a year off first. if you have a good work ethic and motivation in high school then you will be able to transfer those skills and study skills more easily to college curriculum.

I was kind of burned out on school after graduation, so I took last year off. It was a pretty bad snow year, but I still had a really good time and it gave me a much better perspective of what the real world is like. Not only that, but working jobs that high school graduates work gives you a lot of motivation to further your education. Yeah, you can make ok money straight out of high school (ex: I was getting $28/hr), but it's really hard to find a dependable job with any sort of light at the end. I have no regrets about the decision, but I wouldn't ever say it's for everyone.

only thing i'd be afraid of if i had taken a year off is taking that year off then wanting to keep doing what i am

well said... it makes you realize a lot of things

i dont know why people keep saying they would be worried they wouldnt ever go back to school... its the opposite like i fucking hate school and im actaully stoked to be signed up for 2 classes next semester.

it really gives you a different perspective. at the same time, im glad i fucked up enough so i couldnt go straight into college this year, dorms are beat , ive already had that experience in high school. Half a year break is perfect
