Does anyone have an idea on how to make a cardboard box in after effects that can more or less explode open??

You should check out http://www.videocopilot.net They have great after effects tutorials.
What I would do would be to film a box opening in front of a green screen and then composite it into the shot however you want. You probably don't even need after effects to do something like that

If you're trying to make it a realistic 3D box, you should look at tutorials about 3D comps in AE, but be aware that 3D in AE kinda sucks. And like cash-money said, shatter effect with particle playground or CC particle world would be your best bet for the explosion. I hope you have a damn fast computer for that rendering though...
