After Effect Question

I cant watch the video but if im thinking of the same thing that you want to do I would just add blurs to both layers and keyframe them in and out accordingly.
 
Ive done that before

take the frame you want and export it as a jpeg.

open it in photoshop and duplicate the layer so you have two pictures on top of each other. on the top layer, erase everything but your subject. disable that layer so you can see the bottom layer.

use the clone tool to fill the subject, it doesnt have to be perfect, just around the edges (if your subject has no indents, such as a square or circle, you can leave the bottom layer the same).

import the psd into after effects as a composition with cropped layers. open that comp and copy the layers back to the original comp. you can now scale and move the top layer to get this effect
 
i would avoid using the 3d stuff in after effects for this, so no cameras. just scale the top layer and put a blur effect on the bottom layer
 
ncusa nailed it, and I agree that 3D layers/cameras is probably more work than it's worth, but a little bit of corner pinning on the background layer would help you get the slight change in perspective that they have on a couple of those shots.
 
This thread inspired me to attempt and make this effect.

I followed Andy Kramers (videocopilot.net) tutorial which is the same thing that Ncusa described I think.

All I did differently was keyframe a zoom in and out in the beginning and end.

Wow, the overall editing on that music video was not too impressive considering that lupe fiasco is a pretty big name. I'm pretty sure the lext at the start is supposed to be placed in the scenes but it definitely didnt look to hot, haha.
Yeah, sounds like you got it figured out for that effect though, some basic masking and animating is all thats needed.

Some small things I did to make it look nice were:

a. turn on the motion blur on all of your layers in AE

b. highlight and then control (or maybe it was command?) click all of your keyframes and under keyframe assistant turn on "easy ease"

and then in final cut I just applied a blurry vignette, and during the "zoom" part lower the speed of the audio to around 50%
 
^Forgot one important thing

I applied the wiggle expression to the position preset of the camera in AE. I think I set it to 2,25???
 
yaa no kidding. but that was when lupe was first starting out, before he was big and stuff so it makes sense.
