Has anyone stopped to realize how fucking racist 'African American' is?

I mean, that's like assuming all black people come from Africa. Hispanics get pissed when you call them all Mexicans, but why aren't blacks catching on to the fact that this socially accepted term is so racist?

I guess blacks aren't allowed to come from Cambodia, or Jordan, or Lebanon.

i could be wrong but im pretty sure all blacks have some roots going back to africa. I have never seen a cambodian black man

Lol....

black people trace their ancestry to Africa

so what? White people trace their ancestry to black people.

the reason that black people are called african americans is because they do not know their ancestry all the way back from africa, because europeans kinda just threw them on a ship and brought em here to america. Also, back then, they were more like tribes rather than countries so it's really hard to trace back which african country they were from.

actually yes I have a friend who is black and he gets pissed if people call him african american. For a start he is from Canada and his ancestry is actually Caribbean he, and I, think it is bullshit. Nobody I know gets pissed being called white, nor does anyone i knwo who is black get mad being called black.

Erm, where does he think Caribbean black people were shipped from?

Oh yea, and Canada is part of the Americas.

Erm, actually it is, in origination. I don't care where you grew up, ethnically a black person who lives in the Americas is an African American. Why would someone take issue with that?

in orignation the natives themselves are not from North America but crossed the land bridge if you are into that theory. Hey I am not black but he takes issue, respect the person for who they are not their colour or heritage.

Yes, Native Americans are infact Asians, but if you want to go way back we are all either Arabs or Africans according to where you think the human species originated...

The real question is...Does anyone really give a shit, and if so why?

"Has anyone stopped to realize how fucking racist 'African American' is? I mean, that's like assuming all black people come from Africa"

Has anyone stopped to realize how fucking racist the term "black" is? Do you call a chinese person yellow? Do you call native peoples red? I think this is a rather racist yet socially accepted term. It's "African", as simple as that.

.

it's not racist unless you make it out to be. I don't see how that term is in any way degrading, inaccurate? perhaps. degrading? no.

and the blacks do care, i case you haven't noticed they've been going by "people of color" for quite some time, and African American is no longer the politically correct term.

I think people of color is racist toward white people, are they saying i have no color?

No matter what somebody is labeled as somebody is always going to take offense to it because they can.. thats our world for you.. its fucked up because "OmGzzz letz all be PC!1!1!1!"

This world is full of stupid people, live with it.

yo mah homedog brandon was last to post. but yeah i'm actually black and i don't personally take offense to being called african american, however a good part, if not half of my roots come from other places. For instance my great great grandmother was Cherokee and great great grandfather (other side) was a slave owner who married a freed slave.

I think calling people not born in Africa "African American" is rediculous. If you are born in America you are American. No one goes around calling people German American, Swedish American, or Spanish American etc if they were born in America but their family lineage goes back to one of those countries, so why the fuck do people call black people born in America African America... its fucking retarded.

its rediculous how easily people jump on the term 'racist'. calling a black person black or african american is not racist at all. racism is an intolerance of someone due to their race not pointing out their skin tone. of course if someone were to treat someone like dirt because of their race then it would be racism. in general this has watered down the term 'racist' enough that the real racism out there is being overlooked. everytime i have to tip-toe around the issue i feel like im in an age where witches are thought to be real.

It's only widely accepted because people allow it to be.

This is a personal opinion. You can go ahead and call people who are of African background "black" if you like. Why? because the country you live in defines it is socially acceptable. My critique isn't at the use of the word black, so much as it is at the fact that it is such a normal term to use. America has a massive stigma and desire for seperation and differentiation regarding race and it manifests it self in odd ways such as this which I find interesting.

BAHAHAHAHA! The ''erm'' made you sound like some snobby Brit from Harry Potter or something. Definitely sparked an LOL.

Its not racist, its just a bad term. First we called them niggers and then they all got mad because it was used in such a derogitory (sp?) way. So we called them negros but that was also used in a (less) bad way. Then we called them black people. But they complained that 'black' should not be the term since they are not actually black (they are various shades of darker brown). And so we called them African-Americans and now they complain that they are not all from Africa or from America.

I know a bunch of white dudes from Africa, parents from there too, and in some cases grand parents. Some are legal U.S. residents. Are they called African Americans, no, they are white dudes. Folks need to chill on the samantics.

I'm half native north african and am not black but consider myself "african-american" since that is my heritage. I think there should be a difference between black and african-american, you can't really lump them into the same category. In High School I always used to mark African-American on my tests and I got a black scholar award one time. When I went to go pick it up the lady who gave it to me looked it me with the most quizzical face it was hillarious.
