how do you make the text appear as if it is behind a person as they walk by or something

?

just masking?

i dont get it haha
 
masking that will be hard, you have to use the pen tool, i would duplicate the video clip, and on the top one color key it so only the person is still in the shot (that might be hard). put the text in between the two videos and bam
 
if its a relativley still shot, you can just duplicate the video track and mask the person (or object you want to be in front) so only that shows. if the object is moving, it will be harder, but maybe try messing around with the tracking tool in AE to see what you can get
 
Yes. Mask the text, not the person. It'll take a few minutes, but it's your quickest and best option. Plus, the more you roto, the faster you get at it.
