Advice on filming with a dslr

First, I know there are multiple threads about shooting with DSLRs, but I have some specific questions and didn't want to thread jack another thread for this.

I'm going on a motorbike trip, and plan on filming what ensues. What I mostly want to shoot is a bunch of scenery, some riding shots, and hopefully random interviews in the places I pass through. I'm planning on getting some stills as well. I am shooting on a 7d with the 28-135mm kit lens. I know its not the greatest lens around, but it gets the job done and I can't afford another one. I am no expert at all, but over the past few weeks I've figured out the basics of filming with it, but any random tips would be appreciated.

my first question is about shooting while riding. someone I spoke with mentioned that manfrotto makes a c-clamp that would allow me to attach a tripod head to my handlebars so that I could have the camera secured on the bike while riding. this would also allow me to basically use the bike as a tripod of sorts, which would cut down on setup/takedown time if I pull over and want to get some stills. However, I have searched around and can't find this type of clamp anywhere. anybody know what it's called or where to get it?

Second, if I do have the bike attached, I'm afraid of a rock being flung up from either my tire or from a vehicle in front of me and shattering my lens. Would having a filter on prevent this from happening?

Lastly, any suggestions on what other accessories I should acquire to make the whole thing easier/better? my total trip budget is just under 2 grand, 1k of which is allocated to gas, food, and liquor, so basically any filters, mics, and other such accessories that won't break the bank, and would assist with achieving a better final product..

also, if anybody has a bike and can take a few weeks off and wants to ride and shoot, feel free to come. it should be pretty fucking awesome.

putting your 7D on ur handle bars seems like risky business, try to grab a GoPro they have been dropped from 80,000 ft and still record.
as for the clamp, you could look in the lighting department, they have clamps for everything. but with the clamp and the head then the camera it might be way to high off ur handle bars. and you can put the GoPro anywhere. as for a tripod, you can just balance the camera on the seat, and put a glove or something under it to level it out.

as for a filter on your lens, you can pick up a few hoya UVhttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/391165-REG/Hoya_XD58PROTEC_58mm_Clear_Pro_1.html
just pick up a few and keep ur lens hood on. this should protect ur cameras front element. if a big enough rock comes... X(

hope this helps.

If you want a broken 7D, by all means go ahead with the handlebar mount. Get a GoPro, cheap, effective, shockproof, waterproof, good quality, and small.

yeah, and maybe take you’re 7d for lifestyle /other shots but deffs wouldn’t risk the POV with it

I would invest in a quality tripod. Get a gopro for multiple previously stated reasons. UV filters are your lens' bff. Spend less on booze and more on a accesories, such as a RODE mic, more memory cards, and flashes.

i duno about flashes, if you are biking and looking for lifestyle, you dont want to change it at all. maybe one on camera fill but, a setup of flashes is just a pain in the ass.

If you're shooting landscapes, make sure you get a graduated ND filter (.09 works well in conjunction with a polarizer). They are a necessity.

I'm planning on getting several 32 gig cards, a UV filter, and a neutral density filter. I have a manfrotto tripod that I like, nothing super fancy, but it gets the job done and is light, which is the main deal, as I'm packing for the entire month in one backpack. flashes I feel are a waste of space for the type of shooting i'm going for. and how dare you suggest spending less on booze?! its a motorcycle trip. the whole point is liquor.

Alright, take my advice on the 7D and mounting, go for it. I have a 5D and I mounted my camera to my car with a suction cup mount from BandH and clamp, works great. Go to BandHphoto.com and search for grip equipment. C clamp, magic clamp, something like that. I also made a fail-safe with ribbon cable, incase the suction cup fail, the ribbon cable would save it. However I have not needed it yet. Also I have a UV filter on the front of the lens. I have had rock chips hit it and damaged the filter, but never the lens. Once you get it, you will use it a lot! I had/have a lot of fun with it. I'll try to post some grip stuff later. Oh and google motorcycle mounts for dslrs, you might be able to buy the parts for a lot less. At least if you see a mount, you will know what you need to buy for parts. Enjoy.

dude you rule. that helped so much with what I'm trying to accomplish. when you have your camera on your car, are you shooting video, or do you have an intervalometer to shoot stills/timelapses?

no worries man. I shoot video from it. If I do use it for pictures, I use a cable release. ill try to find that website
