advantage of longer skis

hahaha are you a racer too?!? so many kids say that to me and im like

'fuck you i raced as well' mitch hedburg

yeah i ve read a lot about longer skis being better. but i dissagree. i have shorter skis and i really enjoy them a lot more, and especially for rails. its way easier to do 270s on and sw ups and what not on shorter skis. and i just think theyre more fun.

same here

also, why do some people get longer skis than necessary? because it looks cool? you're skiing to have fun not to look good

wow, haha, who knew length was about looks?

the reason i ride longer skis, is as follows:

-more base, faster, in the midwest, we milk every lil bit of speed we can

-more control, due to the longer edge. even with detuned edges underfoot, you still have alot more effective edge available.

-more pop, since you have more ski to work with, you can exert a larger load on the tips or tail, equalling more pop

-more stable, at speed, landing jumps, more ski equals more stability

and yes, i will argue that doing stuff on a bit longer skis looks better, and in some instances is harder. but 99 percent of the time, there are no problems. im 510, 165, and ride 183s (thought they were a tad short. as long as its not a beastly heavy ski, long has no drawbacks

im 6' and ride 178's everywhere ansd the come up to my forehead. lol i alos have some.................161 mad trix for rails and urban. i feel so stypid when i ski them because there so short, and im getting some 182 moships so those will be about perfect for me

Just like that blonde chick from the Three Little Bears: Not to long, not to short, but just right for maximum steeze.

im 510-510 and a half, and ride 169s and they turn awsomely but next year ill prolly get like 179s if i dont grow

longer skies are actually worse for you if they are too long.

the camber of a ski is made to support a certain weight, longer ski ussually means stiffer camber. if you're too light for the ski, the extre length is useless and will actually harm you're ability to control the ski effectivly. being too heavy to a ski will bomb out the camber also and will have the same effect.

thats why companies send out charts to shops. although most newschoolers jsut think longer is better and a 120 pound kids ends up with a 195 ski.

by the way, you're height has absolutly NOTHING to do with the size of you're ski. the only factor that should be considered it weight.

i didn't say you couldn't have fun on skis that arent the reccommended size for you, i'm jsut saying they are optimized for a certain weight.

some like their shoes to fit tighter than others, some like them more loose fitting and besides, are you really going to ride tiny ass skis for big mountain? no
