Across the Universe

I have no idea if there was already a thread about this, searchbar showed no results, so heres my mini rant:

So, I was expecting Across the Universe to be fucking amazing, just as several other million people. What could be better than a trippy ass movie with beatles songs. I probably watched the trailer a good 20 times before seeing the movie. I get a couple of my friends to see it, amped as shit, and it was pretty awful. The beginning was horrible, and for anyone who actually saw the movie, the scene with "I want to hold your hand" made me laugh uncontrollably for a good 10 minutes, as well as the rest of the theater. The plot line was so predictable it ruined the movie. Boy loves girl, goes away, girl finds other boy, they fall in love, END. No climax, no resolution, just crap. Although, the actors were decent at both acting and singing, the combination of both was horrendous. It seemed as if the writer tried to cram as many Beatles songs into a movie as possible, disregarding the fact that it would not make any sense at all. And the ones they put in werent even that good. The Beatles puns (such as Max's "Silver Hammer" banging on the fan) were funny, but got old quickly. Honestly, the movie would have been 100X better if they kept the original songs the beatles did, because no matter how hard someone tries alame musical interpretation will always be terrible. No one is better than the Beatles, end of story. Theres no need to go ahead and ruin some of the best songs even written, and then add bad acting and awkward moemtns into the mix. The whole Janis Joplin and Jimi hendrix duo was totally unnecessary to the storyline, and only made the movie run on longer than it should have.

BUT
there were some positives to the movie that i have to address, Even though Bono is indeed the spawn of the devil, the "I am the Walrus" scene was downright insane. I felt as if i was on an acid trip the entire time. The "Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "Strawberry Fields" were also very well written and were probably the only interesting parts of the movie. If only the director took a step back and realized the whole movie should be like that. AND IT WAS PG-13!!!! How in the hell was that possible, with so many tits. I wish movies were like that when i was 13 goddamn. Overall, it was just about as good as paying 7$ to go see a high school play, not a movie. If you're looking for a good laugh and some weird 60's trippy shit, go see it.

For those who have seen it, Discuss.

Dude, it's a trippy Beatles movie. You're supposed to watch it high. If weed can make Happy Feet good, then this movie should have been amazing.

Indeed i was, and it was still terrible. Like i said the trippy parts were sick, but the musical parts were laughable.

you had high expectations going in, that's probably why you feel that way. i was expecting it to be cheesy, and i was pleasantly surprised. i enjoyed it quite a bit. the plot wasn't crazy, but it was interesting enough for me. I liked the scene with "Revolution" a lot. and I liked how they used different songs than what you would have expected.

i was really excited for it, but it got bad reviews, so i didn't see it.

in what way is bono the spawn of the devil?

the reason they didnt use the origonal beatles soundtrack is because apple records is incredibly protective of their music.

be careful, youre making many, many posts so if you arent careful, you may get accused of post whoring.

Alright let me explain. U3 isnt bad, some songs are dank tracks, but bono is evil. Peep the new(old) south park for more detials "YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!"

I agree somewhat with your comments on the movie. I saw it last night since it was the discount night at the theatre by us, and thought that it was a fun movie to go see, but think it will be better when you can get it on DVD and just chill at home and watch it. Overall I wouldn't pay fullprice to go see it, but would recommend watching it at some point.

Wow, I Loved this movie 100 percent, it was awesome, and the songs were great! Yeah they're not the Beatles originals but the covers they did and the artists they got to sing them were amazing, I like Jim Sturgess' voice better than Paul's or John's.

I felt that it would get unbearably lame at times, getting so predictable or up its own butt for a while, and then stun with a crazily insane artistic shot, or some witty comment or song that would make me fall back into it. A rollercoaster of a movie for sure.

Loved the strawberry fields remake, and Bono.

I agree with you here, but like if they had a recording of the beatles doing the song and but it in the movie, compared to their recording and the movie recording i like the movie one better

i think it's obvious that 'how to dismantle an atomic bomb' is a terrible fucking album. but who doesn't enjoy old u2? and bono actually does shit with his riches to try to improve the world, isn't that an admirable thing to do? should we be hating bill gates for donating millions every year?

I just saw it last night high as a kite and it was incredible. The whole movie went to the music it was so fucking trippy and I loved it. It was even better because I knew all the songs and was getting so stoked sitting there watching a huge screen with some of the best music ever blasting through the speakers.

and whoever still has to go see it make sure you look out for the hippy in a lot of the early scenes. he pops up kind of like waldo its funny. And hes always got a joint.

does the plot of the movie actually have anything to do with the beatles or is it just set to alot of their music?

^the latter.

and the movie was pretty lame. i went high as a kite and it still sucked. just cheesy and stupid. and worst of all they ruined 'being for the benefit of mr. kyte'

i guess its just the fact that directors are trying to do something different by making endings we dont expect like in the breakup they actually do breakup and dont get back togethor this movie is the same thing, i guess some ppl like it i personally don't

i got really high and don't remember that much about it but i do remember the tripy part with the flashing colors which was really awesome on the big screen. I know that I liked it though and if you'd smoked before it you probably would have liked it too.

I wasn't high when i watched it the first time but i still loved it, and im a huge beatles fan. The story's good, the filming is trippy, and i love jude. Then i watched it high and liked it even more.

I'm a huge fan of the Beatles, but knew not to go into this movie expecting a lot, but i was definately very surprised, i enjoyed it quite a bit. The way they used the songs in the movie was really good, and they were well done. But yeah, the I am the Walrus, and Strawberry Fields were the best parts.

I on-demanded it because of this thread...and all i have to say, was that was amazing. I really love what they did with the music, and made sadie almost like a janis joplin, and the black dude (name?) almost like jimi hendrix. Lucy gave me sooooo many flashbacks of "thirteen", but she still did a great job. I LOVED the acid trip part, except when it got really weird when they went into the forest, that was just way too different for my taste. The ending was sick. Strawberry Fields was perfect. Not to mention all the cool film angles they got. I really liked all the songs that they chose, and the hey jude scene was perfect. I thought the underwater scene was really cool too, its awesome how they could do that underwater for as long as they did even though im not much of a fan of mushy movie parts. I really liked this movie.

the first few times i watched it i was pretty high so it was totally awesome to watch even though i had no idea what was going on. 3rd time i wasnt and i have to admit the musical part to it was a little gay but it was still an awesome movie, and some of those covers were pretty damn good... bono was sweet

I reaaaly liked this movie. And if your still stuck up on this movies plot, you obviously missed the point of it by a LONG shot. Seriously, its not about the plot; alot of good movies aren't. Watching the special features really made me appreciate it more too. I loved i am the walrus, she's so heavy, strawberry fields, and for the benefit of mr. kite. In the special features they even say themselves that they know the beatles did it better which is why they reconstructed the songs, and not just take the beatles versions. It was really cool to see how they interpreted the songs differently, how the actors actually sung themselves in the shots (not talk in one voice sing in another), and the overall uniqueness of it. It was fun to watch.

"words are filling up like endless rain into a paper cup"
i fucking hate the beatles, i dunno why, they just piss me off, and that movie was lame also, except for the tits

in my opinion one of the best movies ever. if nothing else the music is amazing and there's a great message..... watching that movie made me want to experience life more and just live again.

if you're watching it just for the acid trip part you'll be very disappointed, it's not very realistic at all, but the funny thing is after they all trip all night and in the morning when they lay on their backs in a circle in that grass. i have a photo of me and some friends one morning that resembles that part extremely close. after we all saw that movie, we were like, holy shit, ended just like our night! super funny.

i thought it was pretty sick and it introduced a lot of people to the beatles since there are chumps out there that have never heard anything that was made before the 90s. I liked the "I want you" section when the brother is going to vietnam. overall it was pretty good i think and a cool idea

something like across the universe is the Bob Dylan based movie "I'm not There" sort of the same idea only for Bob Dylan. If you havent seen it you are missing out. Its pretty tight.
