ACL injury

hi newschoolers. so, i had a bad bail at the park yesterday. i fell and twisted my knee, but 3 seconds later i stood up and skied to the end of the slope. today ive visited a doctor and he said that i have a broken acl, but he is not100% sure. is it possible to have a broke an acl and just get up. i can walk(but not very good). i also need to decide wether should i go for the surgery or not. my knee doesnt feel that bad..what should i do?

probably not fully torn. when I fully tore mine, my knee dislocated a couple times afterwards when I was trying to stand up & clip into my skis. and that shit didn't feel good at all.

also, if you can afford it, get an MRI. I wasn't recommended for an MRI until 3 months after the injury, and so I lost two seasons instead of one.

1) You don't break your acl as you so eloquently put it, instead you tear, pull, strain, or rupture it2) Grammar is useful and has its place even in forums

3) That sucks that you have hurt yourself

4) If you can walk around on it then surgery will probably not be necessary

5) Not I nor anyone else on this site will be able to diagnose you over the internet so use common sense, go see a doctor or someone that can physically asses what you have done.

Hope you recover before the season cause injuries really suck and I feel for you

everything about this post is wrong. 1) when I tore my acl three weeks ago it hurt, but I thought i'd be fine and after two doctors (not sports professionals) said it was just a strain I thought I was in the clear 2) Although most times your acl will swell and your knee will fill with fluid, mine really didnt swell at all 3) just cause you can walk doesnt mean the acl isnt torn 4) see a sports specialist and he will have a pretty accurate idea and if not the MRI will 5) if it is torn you'll probably want surgery (as soon as you can just to start the recovery process as quickly as possible)

It is absolutely possible, yes, although more serious tears are accompanied with swelling not too long after, which limits motion. Often people find their knee doesn't feel all that weird after, only for it to worsen later on.

Your doctor isn't 100% sure, and there really is no way of telling unless you go get an MRI, which is what I suggest (if you can). When I tore my ACL (complete tear) and MCL (grade 2-3, almost complete tear) and meniscus, my doctor initially told me that it was probably just a sprain and it would sort itself out. I came back after 2 weeks, he did the usual tests to test for shin movement and spasming calf muscle, yet told me I would be fine a couple more weeks. I asked him to refer me for an MRI (cause you need a referral to get one in the UK), and he told me that wasn't necessary. A couple weeks later, my knee still wasn't stable, although the swelling and stuff and gone down, but by this time I was already on my way back to Canada. Went to my family doctor, he did the same shin-bone and calf-muscle test, told me I could have a partial ACL tear but to rule out a complete tear. I went to a physio (who works with the Canadian alpine team, so he knew his shit), after he performed some tests he told me it's pretty likely I had a fully torn ACL. So I went back to my family doctor, asked him for a referral, then ended up shelling out $500 for a private MRI cause at this point I was pretty fed up (this was nearly 2.5 months after the injury). Results came back and it turned out I had a ACL+MCL+meniscus tear. Needless to say, I was pretty annoyed with the way the doctors just kinda brushed it off with the whole "you'll be fine, come back next week" attitude.

Anyway, wait a couple weeks and if it still isn't better, ask your doc if you can get an MRI (you won't be able to get one now anyway, if there's swelling... you either MRI immediately after or wait until swelling goes down). Better to be completely sure than to fuck around with your knees.

Thanks to everyone, i will surely go to MRI as soon as the swelling goes. doctor said that the recovery will be 6 weeks.

If you go through my 5 points and can find fault with everyone of them I will be impressed you sir are a complete fucking dumbass

all i got out of this post is Thank Goodness That I Live In America! Soundls like the canadian helath care system is really working well LOL.

but serioulsy that really sucks. Knee reconstructions are the absolute worst.

hahahaha no just no.I fully tore my acl and was walking three days after without crutches just a brace. Got surgery today. Injured the 10th sooooooooooo what were you saying about walking and no surgery?

related question, sorry i don't mean to threadjack:

yesterday skiing when i got done i noticed some tightness on my left inner thigh, lower towards my knee. it didn't hurt at all skiing or walking on it, just if i bent my knee close to all the way in. something definitely doesn't feel right though.

thoughts?

swollen? did it buckle? How did the injury happen? does it feel unstable? You could have tweaked it or sprained it many things could have happened don't scare yourself into thinking it's something super serious but keep it in mind.

don't remember how it happened, didn't ever really fall in a knee straining way. almost NO swelling, and does not feel unstable. like i skied on it for probably a few hours last night and did not notice it until i got inside and the heat got to it.

so do you have full extension with no pain? And flexion hurts or can't be done all the way? If you feel around the outside of your knee both sides and feel pain in small areas or large i would start to get concerned, But i am no doctor at all and what i could be telling you could be useless. But its good you were able to ski with no pain and walking is stable. I would think it's more of a strain or something like that. If pain gets worse or you get unstable and feel uncomfortable i'd be worried. But feel it out maybe a couple days off skiing or light skiing till you get full motion back? Do some research online too hope i helped a little. knees are scary stuff. But either way 4-way leg lifts are never a bad idea to strengthen ones knees. Good luck man, pm me if you have any more questions ill try and help

Yes it could happen that you do have some kind of ACL injury.

I bailed pretty badly last season, and stood up straight after put on my skis and wrode down again, but when i went up in the lift pain hit me pretty bad. it started to swell and i made the huge mistake of thinking i was fine without going to a doctor, and started to ski once again after a few weeks when i tor the initial tear even more. Now at first i think i only over streched it but that turned out to be a tear after me skiing again. It was only a partial tear however and i didnt need surgery, but that was decided after my doctor had opened up my knee and put a camera in to fully see what was up, because my MRI scan didnt show anything more then a possible injury. So this season i am able to ski but i wear a brace now for extra support but its super vital to work up the muscles around the knee if you have an injury, because it makes everything alot better in the long run!

Hope your gona be able to ski the rest of the season tho, or if not then next season! +vibes and good luck!

It's totally possible it's torn. Knee injuries often go unnoticed. Yes you should get the surgery. 6 months of being out is wayy better than being at a much higher risk to injure it again and it'll probably hurt for a long time too

I'm super serious about this. GET THE SURGERY. If you don't for a whiile, it'll get fucked up. Next season, you'll try to ski, and you

If you are going to correct the OP about using 'break' im going to correct you about using 'strain'.

Strain is medically used to describe tendon/muscle injuries, the equivalent term for ligaments that you are looking for is 'sprain'.

I tore both of my ACLs at the same time 2 seasons ago overshooting a booter. I had to get a ride down in the sled but I spent the rest of the day hiking the park with my brother with my boots on just filming him on the rails. I thought I was just sore and had no idea how bad my injury was. Hurt like a bitch later that day though

Yesterday i fell on the landing of a booter. i landed on my tail bone and my skis stayed on and i started down the hill. it hurt like a bitch but i skied the rest of the day. in the midfle of the nigjt i woke up with a throbing pain in both calvs. i ttied soaking my legs in a tub of warm water and that releaved the pain but as soon as i steped out i felt my calvs tighten right away. does this sound like torn acl's?

no not really man sounds like some pulled or stretched muscles in your calves. ACL you would feel pain in your knee and it would be very unstable and just feel off. I think you're alright but do lots of stretching before and after skiing, one of the best ways to prevent injury
