Accutane

has anyone on NS ever taken accutane?

i was reading up on it, and theres a possibility of it not working. So im just wondering how it worked for you guys

my friend is on it right now. it seems to be working pretty good but it's only like the 2nd month i think. he can't drink a week before his liver tests or else he'll fail or something i guess. but i've heard a lot of horror stories from that shit...

it worked for me and i was on it for like 6 months.. the worst part about it was the super dry skin and blood tests every month, but all worth it in my opinion. i had fairly bad acne before the treatment, and now i only get a few occasional pimples.

i dont have really bad acne anymore, but i did. and although my acne isnt as bad as before, i get a new pimple roughly everyday. and im really tired of it because i know im going to have really bad scarring if i keep popping them.

have you thought of a less intense version of acne treatment? Accutane is really for if you have bad acne. there are pills and creams that can help you out with the occasional pimples that really do work. you don't want to go through the whole process if you don't have a relativly bad case of acne. but this is only my opinion, you can do whatever you like.

Well i took accutane for 6 months. The first 2 months showed a little to no improvement. I was told that the biggest month where you will see the most change is your 3rd. Which in my case was true.

By my start of my 5th month i was completely clear.

theres ridiculous side affects that you need to be aware of... my 6th month blew huuuuge. I was extremely depressed and i had no motivation to do anything. I couldnt find the reason of my depression so i blamed it on accutane. most common side affects would be hella dry skin, chapped lips and nose bleeds.

Lotion all parts of skins especially face, vaseline in the nostrils, and chug water when you can.

I would always get nose bleeds when i showered in the morning and at night after soccer or w/e sport i was in.

always have chapstick

any questions pm me. oh and you need to be aware that most doctors will draw blood once a month to keep everything to their normal

well i got a topical prescription a while back that just dried out my skin to the point of flaking. and ive used proactiv, spectro jel, nivea, and neutrogena.

so far neutrogena is the best, but it still doesnt do a very good job.

all im saying is ive tried a lot, and none of it seems to work, so i thought accutane might be different?

Accutane is hands down the best acne killer. its just the whole process can be a bitch. as stated above- nose bleeds, dry skin, chapped lips, blood drawn every month or so, and the very unlikely but possible chance to become depressed are all things you need to factor in when making your decision. the question is wether or not you want to commit yourself to this process..

DERMATOLOGIST

Seriously, don't fuck around if you want it gone, go see a doctor and they'll tell you whats up.

i highly doubt that would make much of a difference if any. Do you have proof to back that statement up?

I don't feel like searching for facts but its true.Well, it won't clear it up completely, but it will certainly thin it out and make it less severe.I cut soda, candy, and other unhealthy foods out of my diet completely and it helped my complexion tremendously.Exercise and just generally being in good shape is also good for your skin.

Sorry for the double post, but I have also heard that accutane is a shit show.My friend told me the six months he was on it he felt like complete shit non-stop.He took showers compulsively because he always felt dirty and was just generally depressed.

All legit. I find that ou dont need crazy drugs for that stuff. I cut out alot of sugars and fats from my diet. I also try to sweat alot to flush out pores then shower almost right after to clean out any shit left in them. Oh and cut back on jerking off. I dont know what it is but hey, it works!

100% false. the food you eat has nothing to do with your acne, acne is a genetic thing and is caused by bacteria. No matter what food you eat, your skin is going to still produce the same amount of oil, but people with more oily skin are usually prone to acne. Food has nothing at all to do with acne what so ever.
Ive had mild-moderate acne for 4 years now. It really was never extremely bad but it made me very self conscience. So I started using a regimen that was pretty much the same thing as proactive, a mild cleanser, benzoyl peroxide at least twice a day after washing my face with the cleanser, and then a moisturizer. It worked very well. The first two months i didnt see much of a difference, but after 3 months I was completely clear. If you stick with it, it will work, trust me. go to acne.org for more info.

I have an appointment with my dermatologist to get my prescription. Anyone know if i need to wait a few days to get them for the blood test or if I just get them on the spot.

usually get them right after meeting with the derm. I just started taking it too, and was wondering how if anyone else on here has done it and not had acne come back after going off accutane? stories?

i read that just using a topical benzoyl peroxide(main ingredient in acne treatments) to treat it will work better if not just as effectively and it's available at your pharmarcy. i bought one and it seems to work well. i also read that you can't completely stop acne, but you can only treat it.

You sound like you haven't seen a dermatologist yet, in which case your dermatologist won't immediately offer accutane as an option to you, thus this thread is useless.

Get some acne, but very little. You can also take it a second time later on, so it can clear it if it didn't work perminately the first time

I took it two summers ago.

My Experiance-

1. Felt like shit 24/7

2. Extremly dry skin.Worst chaped lips ever. You seriously cannot imagine.

3. Terrible initial breakout which lasted the whole 5 months( acne got way worse)

4. Weight lose 20 pounds

5. Depression- Had really weird thoughts felt sad all the time. Slept anychacne I got.

6. Had to quit 1 month early because the depression got really bad. I never told my parents about it until after I was off of it.

7. The worst part was the muscle/ joint aches. Every part of my body hurt, but my back and knees were the worst. I would wake up in the morning and hardly be able to walk. Even after quiting the drug it took me 8 months to get over the pain. I still exeriance sore joints to this day.

I will admit that my skin did clear up dramatically after I finished my regime. My skin is still pretty clear. I get breakouts every now and then but my skin is clearer than most people I know. I do know people who have taken it and been fine. I think it really just depends on the person and there bodys chemistry. If you are dead set on taking it then try it, but if you cant handle it deff quite and try something less damaging to your body.

This ^ But accutane is a life saver. Im on my last month and my skin looks like it did when I was 5. It is sooo clear. The side affects are big. I will just come after school then sleep until 10 then go to bed and wake at 12 the next day and still wanting more sleep. Dry skin and chapped lips were big the second and third month but then it slimmed down. The depression and body aches were the worst. But it was all worth it i think

I took it when I was like 16 ish. Worked great. The acne never real came back either. Not nearly as bad as before anyway. Dries out your skin and stuff but its a small price to pay to get something that actually WORKS. Just have some blistex on you a lot and your good man.

Pretty sure I saw one of those "if you have taken Accutane and grown a third eye call us now you may be entitled to compensation" ads on TV.

Research is being done to prove that it causes intestinal diseases, one that I might be suffering from. I'm getting a colonoscopy when I get home from school because I've had the symptoms of ulcerative colitis for quite a while now and it could get really bad. Every case against accutane for this side effect has won multi-million settlements....but I realize that's one in a million.

On a side note, it totally took care of my acne. I had to take two cycles though.

I took it last semester ( august to january ) . and everything went good. There was nothing bad other than dried skin (lips, etc. ) .

Did they talk about grown 6th fingers or toes, cause I could claim it. I already have them , meheheh

I took it. It worked amazingly well for me. The only side affects i had were dry lips and skin. To my knowledge there is not a single case were accutane has been proven to be the cause of a seriouse side affect.

i took it when i was 18 or 19. worked amazingly well, but takes like 4-6 months to kick in. after you're done with it, you really dont have to worry about acne ever again. i mean, people still have little breakouts and zits here and there, nothing can be done about that, but you'll lose the pizza-face look. i hate it really bad on my forehead and around the nose and chin, and it cleared it right up.
the shit dries you right out though. your lips are always going to be chapped and nasty, and you have to do routine bloodwork to make sure your liver isn't failing, because the medication does have profound effects on you, internally, but there's really not much risk. it's just going to suck having a dry mouth and lips all the time, so carry chapstick around. i think i used to put vaseline in my nostrils too because they made me a little more susceptible to nose bleeds too.
any way, highly recommended if you have really really bad acne. otherwise, dont bother. zits and breakouts are part of growing up.

I have made a lot of posts about Accutane, and when I took it. So Instead of writing more, I did a search and found some of my old posts. You can find a lot more info if you Google ""accutane" site:newschoolers.com"

"Please stop saying it is linked to depression. This is FALSE. Ask your doctor about it. There is NO scientific link they can find to tie it in with any kind of depression. Ask your doctor and he will tell you this, or just go do some research yourself.
The only reason people think this is because some Senator's kid committed suicide while on Accutane. He was pissed and made it his mission to take it out on Accutane. The truth is that his son had a long history of mental problems, and had tried to commit suicide twice before he took Accutane. The Accutane was not related to his death...period.
I loved Accutane. I took it a few years ago for just over 5 months. I had terrible acne and it was amazing. I still hardly ever get any pimples to this day. I had a lot of side effects while on it, but I would do it all over again in a heart beat. Acne sucks... I had dry skin, lips, rashes developed on my inner arms and the tops of my hands, my lower back, hips and knees would get sore easily, I got constipated, and maybe some more things I can't remember. With all that it was still 100% worth it. After my great results, 3 of my friends took it after me and all had slightly less side effects, with just as good of results.
There is apparently some link they have found that it can lead to Irritable Bowel Disease. I can't say anything on this because I have been lactose intolerant and had IBS before taking Accutane. For me, actually within the past few months it seems my lactose intolerance and IBSare subsiding. So, who knows. You may develop stomache problems, for me, it made them go away...?"

"You don't notice much right away. For me the first couple months didn't do a whole lot. Then the third month started to clear up. On the fourth I was pretty clear but my upper cheeks broke out pretty bad. After those went away I was at the end and finished at 5.5 months."

"Accutane is the answer. I had horrible acne from about 6th-7th grade until 11th grade. I tried everything that exists. Proactiv and its knock-offs, all kinds of washes, prescription stuff, even this eBay stuff. Nothing worked. Then I finally got accutane. It is the best, and ONLY thing that worked for me. I was on it for 5.5 months. Yes, it was horrible. It was during ski season and my knees, hips and back would alwasy be sore because it messes with your joints. I had the worst dry skin. I would put lotion on 10 times a day. It dried the shit out of my lips. I was constipated a lot and shit. I got rashes on the tops of my hands sometimes, and the inside of my arms. There might even be more that I'm forgetting. BUT even with all that, I WOULD DO IT AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT. Because the shit actually worked. It's been over a year now and I am still fine. All my side effects went away within a few days. All I do now is wash my face with some regular cleansing face wash. The only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner instead of living with it on my conscience all those years. I would suggest it to anyone who has acne. If your doctor says you can take it, do it.
Also, about the liver stuff. I was always fine. I smoked, but held off on drinking a lot, and was fine. Two of my friends who also did it got wasted all the time and never had any liver problems."

sounds not worth it at all. I make it sound worse than it really is.

"Well, hopefully one day youll get bad enough that youll need accutane, lol. I Honestly tried everything mentioned in this thread when I had acne. I had it i think from 6th or 7th grade. I tried ProActiv and every kind like it, eBay acne stuff, defferin, perscribd anti-biotics, retin-a.....EVERYTHING. Nothing worked at all, and it just made my skin dry, and with acne. I had it bad, but not monster bad. I always put off Accutane because I thought I would die from the side effect (mainly the joint problems, becase i didnt want it to effect skiing). Then my dad forced me to do it, and I gave in.
I was on it for 5.5 months. Yes it sucked, I had to use chapstick all the fuckin time, and my use lotion 20 times a day. It was in winter so i skied a lot. My hips, knees, and back would get sore a lot, but nothing major. I got this weird red rash on the top of my hands and inside of my arms that would come and go. I got slight roids when I shit sometimes cuz it dies out your intestines. I think thats it, maybe a little more.
But overall with all that crap for 5 months, IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE! By 3 days after you stop, your skin does not need lotion, your lips get fine (I just use chapstick sometimes, which may be because of the dependence chapstick crates when you use it a lot). But I never get bad chapped lips. My joints are 100% fine. And I get about 1 SMALL pimple a month, and it will go away within 2-3 days. It has been about a year since I stopped, and I would do it again if I had to.
Well, that turned out to be a long post. If you dont need accutane, then good, but if you, or anyone, ever gets offered to take it by your doctor, or he says it would be ok, TAKE IT! Even if your acne isnt that bad, it will just mean you will be on the accutane for a shorter time. THEN ITS GONE FOREVER!"

Just wondering...but what is going through your head after 4 months of this hell to make you CONTINUE to take it. It worked fine for me so I'm kinda biased but man...your were winkin out.

eh i was on accutane for 5 months and really didnt have that bad of acne. it was the fact that it was extremely persistant, and other treatments didnt work that i used it and it worked splendidly for me. all i gotta say though is you should definitely get some good chapstick. cause my lips would get sooo fucking dry

IDK where you read that it doesn't work... It WORKS... the bad thing is that it can cause HORRID side effects. You will get chapped lips to the point that they will crack and bleed.

I've heard horror stories about it killing people's digestive systems and having problems the rest of their life... but I took three sessions of it and was fine.

honetly ive never had a problem with acne that bad, just on my forehead, but that sounds fucking terrible and I would never go through that to remove a few pimples from my face as OP stated

worked really well for me, when nothing else at all worked. Just use an oil free moisterizer after showers/face washings, and i used an exfoliant every day too. accutane works by speeding up the lifecycle of skin so that the layers shed off quickly. so you want to help the process by exfoliating your skin everyday.

i never had any side effects that werent mild and could be managed with normal moisturizer and chapstick.

dont worry about the drinking before blood tests, just tell them that you drank hard, if you fail a test, and they will retest you. I drank plenty while on it.

Overall i highly recomend it, though freshman year in HS a really good friend of mine killed himself, and the depression started while he was on it. so if you do start feeling bad, seriously at least tell your parents.

It is still a serious drug though. It is a last resort that shouldn't be taken lightly. It causes your liver to become inflamed, and drinking a lot can put too much stress on it. It really isn't recommended. I did it a bit too, but looking back it wasn't a good idea. Messing with your liver is never a good thing. You lose it, you die.
And you really need to make sure you have a good doctor too. They can be wrong, and make mistakes. Taking the wrong dosage, high or low, can be bad. Also, I don't know why that one guy said he took it for 2 years. Your doctor should have known better than to keep you on it for that long at once.
