Diet and cardio are the keys to not getting fat. Ab exercises will do nothing to control bodyfat %.

But the answer to what you asked for is that the crunch is the cheapest, siplest, and most effective ab exercise.

 
Find a high bar, (high enough that your legs dont touch the ground), they grab on to it as if you would be doing a chin-up, then do knee raises, it will work your lower abs.

theres actually no such thing as working out your lower abs and your upper abs. its all one muscle. rectus abdominus. everything works everything. oh and dont try and do 200 sit ups. max of 12 for best results

What are you talking about, that has to be the stupidest thing i've heard. You can work all your abs at once, there's lower, and upper. Just like in your bicep, there's an interior, and exterior bicep.

everyone has a 6 pack, you just can't see them very well unless you are under 10% body fat, all the situps/crunches/roman chair/abs lifts in the world won't make them come out if you have even a healthy amount of fat on your body. Just do fat burning excersizes everyday (slow repetitive motions of large muscle groups, like legs) for an hour or two, and diet they will show up in a few months if you're not too fat. I am prolly 12% bodyfat so mine are half visible depending on what I've eaten that day. Once I lose about 5 more pounds they will be there all the time, but I'm currently on the "bulking" phase of a lifting regimin so I eat 4000+calories a day, this winter I'm gonna go into the "cutting" phase and lose all my fat.

actually there is only one ab muscle. there is the internal and external OBLIQUES. but only the one in the front. oh and theres actually 3 bicep muscles

one excersize that really works for me is to go to your gym and get the 1/2 bouncy ball and sit down slighly on the edge and lean all the way back and do the crunches with your head looking straight up..after only 15 they will be burning...and also..yes everyone has 6 pack..but by doing ab workouts they will actually get stronger and serve a purpose..you could just lose weight but the abs wont do anything for you

work out your legs too. excersizing large muscles will be more liek an aerobic excersize and havign larger muscles liek the quads will allow you to burn more fat. and its good for skiing

Alright, here's what you gotta know: (I'm a human kinetics major so don't anyone call me an idiot cuz I'm not and this is my field of study)

1) To get abs you need to reduce your body fat. For guys aim below 10% and girls below 15%.

2) All you need to do are QUALITY crunches. Don't swing your arms, don't belt them out as fast as you can and don't stop short. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. I do sets of 25 and I get a burn. I can do over 500 the way I used to do them (improperly). You don't need to hang from a bar or use a bouncy ball or contort yourself, just straight proper crunches. Knees bent, hands behind the neck, count 2 up hold for one and 2 down. Go up as far as possible.

Anyways, everything you need to know is in the following website. It's good and it's legit. One of the few on the net that actually follows the fitness training principles that have been proven.

you dont need to diet you need to eat properly. you dont have to count calories, or reduce your carbs (stupidest diet ever, linked colonic cancer). just throw out the KD and other processed shit. even easier, eat almost anyhting you want an go for a 40 minute run 3-4 times a week.

It's funny how 99.9% of the world hears the word diet and automatically thinks of practically starving themselves. Diet is a very vague word, just like the word exercise. I'm on a diet. You're on a diet. Everyone is. It is just a word that stands for a regimen of the foods you eat. People may follow different types of diets depending upon their goals, just like a workout. So you want to lose fat/tone up. Let me get one thing across here, I have people come up to me all the time and tell me well I don't really want to lose fat I just want to tone my muscles. That is what toning is. Muscles can do 3 things, shrink, grow or stay the same size. There's no toning, toning is simply removing the overlying fat off the undelying muscle tissue. So you want to lose fat and need a diet. You've come upon a simple equation.

calories in < calories out. Simple as that.

Now a major problem that people encounter is they want to gain a ton of muscle and lose fat at the same time. It's not going to happen. You have to exercise in stages. When you want to bulk up you train/eat to bulk up. More calories in than out. You're going to put on some excess fat along with the muscle you gain. Boo hoo, too bad that's how it works. When you're done with mass training and you're mass diet and you want to lose fat you train/eat to lose fat. The end.

 
of course technically all eating is a diet. but labelling it a diet gives people the impression it is something that they dont want to do and has negative connotations. they think its something they have to try to stay on. its just like when your parents tell you not to do something. same effect. your gonna try and cheat your "diet". if its a simple thing like eating a regular semi healthy -nonspecific- "diet" then there is no point of calling it a diet. of course if its an athlete or someone training who obviously has enough mental control and motivation to do it then this is not relevant

I never said going on a diet. If you eat at mcdonalds, eventually you'll get fat, but the food you eat is still your diet.

And you will have to do what is referred to as "cardio" but since everyone on here is getting technical, I'll rephrase. You need to find out what your heartrate is supposed to be to stay within the fat burning threshold, and excercise at that heart rate for around 45mins for no less than 3 times a week, and probably more if you are chubby.

 
yeah man i am the same way wtih my abs, i can see a six pack in the morning when i wake up, and then when i eat during the day they go away haha, but your saying they will show up better if i work out other parts to burn fat? cas starting tomorrow i am re-starting my training for racing (since i was on vacation), i train twice a day, 4 miles each time holding like 5 pound weights in each hand, i will let you guys know if i can see them better at the end of the week, since i am like, so boarder line.

Honestly though if someone is a lame enough bitch to let the word "diet" alone scare them, then they obviously won't have the self-discipline to workout consistently, let alone eat right. i like atomics or bicycles. after a while the crunches dont do anything for me. for atomics you lay flat down, and bring your legs in and your upper body in, so that you would be in the regular position of a crunch, with your feet in the air and your shoulders touching your knees. i cant really describe bicycles, look them up. dont forget though, abs dont look good without pecks so get benchin and doin flys.

the pilates 100.... lay on your back with your spine long and everythin flat onthe floor. life you neck/head and lift your legs to a 45 degree angle flex your stomach and ass and legs and lift your arms paralell 6 inches off the ground and pump them up and down but stay solid and breathe in for 5 counts and out for five until you've reached 100.

i think i disagree with you when you say there is not such thing as toning muscles. im not sure about this, im not like some of the posters majoring in this, but i personally find that when im at a gym, i can put on or lose muscle MASS very very very quickly. but tone/hardness of muscles takes building a muscle to whatever size i want, and then keeping the weight but upping the reps. it seems to work.

oh and the dude who wanted to know how to get abs....swim my man, go swimming.

I don't think I agree with that. I see no reason why running would work against getting abs. You reduce your body fat % which allows them to show through better and your abs stabilize your torso for the entire distance of the run so you get a light ab workout while running. Anyways, explain.

Oh and tone is pretty well slang.

Tone refers to the slight contraction of muscles even when relaxed.

So tone is used to describe a person's physique when that person's muscles are well defined to the point of appearing contracted even though they are relaxed.
