Aaaaaand Another Rock Climbing Thread

So I currently work for the rock wall at the college I go to, so I get pro deals on certain items.

I'm looking at buying a 70m Sterling Marathon Pro Rope 10.1mm and a dozen quickdraws. I know I get a discount on Sterling ropes, but I have not figured out the quickdraw situation yet.

What does everyone use? I would be doing mostly sport climbing. Recommendations and experiences with gear would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everybody. Climb on.

While the Marathon Pro is a classic rope from a great manufacturer, I would recommend something with a smaller diameter. In general any rope 10mm or above is considered "fat." Unless you're going to be doing a lot of toproping, aim for something 9.8 or smaller. You're right to buy 70m though.

For quickdraws, Petzl Spirits are widely accepted as the finest. I personally use BD Oz quickdraws. Try to avoid anything with a huge notch for the gate as they will get annoying fast. Do you get legit prodeal or just through Outdoor Pro Link or Promotive?

rope width is all preference, 10.1 isn't TOO big by any means but he is right it will be a bit harder to feed than something a little bit smaller. quick draws are quick draws, some are easier to unclip/clip because of fancy little wire hooks and shit but when it comes down to it if you can clip your rope into one you can clip it into um all. i use a new england honnald 70m 9.9 rope and some custom BD draws, does the job.

if you're using it inside a fat rope is cool. You're gonna fall loads,a thicker rope should stretch less and last longer.

I'm not sure how the pro deal works yet, I emailed my boss to figure it out but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

But from what my coworkers told me I should be getting 20-60% off of gear through whatever we use.

If it's through Outdoor Pro Link or Promotive the problem is it's usually for somewhat crappy gear, such as CAMP. Then it's off the MSRP price and they rape you on shipping. Point being, don't just assume that because it's "pro deal" that it is automatically good.

Okay thank you for that information. From what I've been told we get deals on brands that we use at our rock wall. We use Sterling rope, so we get a deal on that. We also have Black Diamond gear so I would also get a discount on some of their items.

Scratch what I said, it's through Outdoor Pro Link.
