Why would a good ol' Southern boy such as yourself, a patriotic citizen of the U.S. of A, want to listen to hippie crap like reggae? Wouldn't your manly Carolina friends lookdown on you for being a sissypants fag lovin fairy boy? Or is your trailer insulated? The next thing you know you'll be growing your hair, smoking dope, joining a cult and caring about the plight of whales. Or, horror of all horrors, voting for John Kerry. You better hope the rest of the trailer park doesn't find out. Or you'll be shunned.-trevorwoulddoit

The above is a perfect example of the common misconseptions that people have of the south. I am not just talking about the stupid sterotypes that have to do with being inbred or living in a tralior park, but I am talking about the south from an ideological stand point.

As yall may have noticed, the southern members on this board tend to be conservative in their political stance, yet they seem to be a little contradicting in what they say outside of political forums (I am talking for myself and the people I know and not nessicarily for the other Southern members on this site). They support Bush and smoke pot, what? I have always gotten a kick out of this, the youth in the south tend to be conservative, but are not restrained by the views outside of the political arena. So, my icon says W'04, I smoke pot, I listen to the Dead, it doesn't make sense, but it does down here. All of the people that I hang out with, smoke with, go to shows with support Bush too, it is nothing out of the ordinary for here as most of the youth is Conservative. I am , by no means saying that there are no liberals, Chapel Hill is one of the most liberal schools in the nation, but the conservatives severely out number them. So that explains the apparent contradiction, but the yankee ignorance continues.

We do have skiing down here, not the best but skiing nevertheless. Sugar Mtn has a double black and Beeche is the highest ski area in the East, but they haven't caught on completely, Sugar still won't let skiers in the park.

The south is the poorest region of the nation, but we can still buy and sell all of the other areas. Charlotte alone is the home to the second and third largest banks in the nation (Bank of America and Wachovia) and the home to Duke Energy. We also have the Panters and the Bobcats. Shallow Hal the movie was also filmed here.

Now, down to the common misconceptions. I, personaly do not know anyone who has anyone inbred in their family but I am sure it happens just as it does everywhere else in the nation. I do indeed drive a 4x4 pickup but I also wear polo, lacoste, and brooks brothers. I personally hate country but a lot of people like it, and a lot hate it (I am partial to bluegrass though.) THe confederate flag, the first national flag, the confedate battle flag, the bonnie blue, the stars and bars, these are all flags or names of flags that are commonly associated with racism due to the War of Northern Aggression (civil war.) Well they are not at all racist, but they are a symbol of the heritage and pride of the south.

I don't know exactly why I am posting this but I just think that a lot of yall yankees really are ignorant to this region and only know some of these misconseptions and I just felt that I should enlighten yall. Again, I speak for only myself and none of the other Southerners on the site.

I used to live in the south, and I dont think that its that they contradict themselves by smoking pot, I think they dont care about politics all that much and arnt politically involved generally. I dont think Canadians are simular to that, because they dont all live in the country, mostly in the city, so...not that many are redneck. Too much generalization, but its an interesting point.

Well in your little word above you do the same by generalizing certain things that people in the 'north' may think about people in the 'south'. If you are trying to speak out about not generalizing then it is probably best you do not generalize yourself.

and for those that want to get into the civil war bullshit, the war was not over slavery, lincoln emancipatd the slaves well after the war was coming, it was politically and econmoically motivated. The south wanted to break away but the north didnt want that because the southern states held the mad amount of money from the cotton and tobacco cash crops. Slaves were emanipatedto help draw more soldiers to the north and create dissention and inward fighters in the south. Sorry that was pretty off topic

so what you're saying is that being a 'conservative' suits you rather well, but there are many areas of your life that are distinctly un-conservative? So this means that being a 'conservative' will always be sort of half-assed for you? Have you ever considered a political alignment that combines the fiscal prudence of a conservative system with the social freedom of a liberal system? The two are not mutually exclusive you know.

you know I read what you wrote and was fairly impressed with everything and how well you spoke your mind but you lost ALL credibility when you call the civil war the war of northern aggresion! that right there is why we give the south so much crap. it was the CIVL WAR, the 'north' wasn't the bad guy in this one nor was the south but it was the south that seperated and started the war. And you mention the confederate flag has become a sign of racism. well guess what it essentially is. the reason for the civil war was slavary, the idea that one person is less than another and in this case that was based on the color of their skin. so yes the confederate flag is a sign of racism, it may also be a sign of 'patriotism' but guess what you LOST the war! so stop calling it the war of northern aggresion and stop denying the racist practices of the souths history

I also live in north carolina, like BigJ. The south is the poorest part of the country largely due to the black and hispanic populations. Besides, southern people and mountain people are different. All the stereotype about inbred, etc is due to the way the people in the mountains lived FIFTY OR MORE years ago. some still may be inbred but much less of a percent

I think the civil war brings up a good point, but people now, modernly, may have a confederate flag somewhere in their car or house. This is usually associated with racism and I think rightly so, but sometimes the people bearing those flags dont think it like that, but think of the confederate flag as a patriotic symbol of the south. If their proud of being a southerner, a choice to represent the south may be the confederateflag, but usually, the people who make that decision do not think about the racism part of the flag. It doesnt occur to them. But I guess thats another generalization, so its possible people with those flags could be kkk members.

Huckster, you're an idiot if you save the Civil War was about slavery...States rights was the biggest reason for the war...Slavery was one small part of that. The slaves weren't freed til halfway through the way...if they were the reason for the war, they would have been freed right away.

yes slavary wasn't the main reason for the civil war but it was the reason why the states had issues with their rights and what they actually were. If you think about it this way: if we never had slavary in the US would we of had a civil war? and you say you don't want this to turn into a civil war debate but thats my main 'problem' if i have one with the south is that their is this idea that this area should be differnt from the rest of the US for some unknown reason.

Also I would like Bigj to explain why he supports Bush. I'm actually curoius and also how old your are because I find really interesting to talk to young americans who support Bush becasue to me its something I don't understand and would like to understand that view point. Beech Mountain is the highest town on the East Coast, and the highest point on the East Coast is Mt. Mitchell in NC.

There is a reason why we dissent the fact that Southerners often flaunt the old confederate flag. The reason? Because 140 yeas ago an extremely bloody war was fought to keep this nation as one. And 140 years later, by flying that flag, you are saying that you still would rather be on your own.

The other thing that really does not make sense, is that the people who are DIRECTLY threatened by terrorism, those that live in the largest cities in the US, voted strongly against Bush, while those who live in more rural, unpopulated areas voted for Bush. And also, those same people who live in the poorer areas of the south, whom are hurt by Bush's economic plans, still voted strongly for bush?

Also, I'd love to hear your reasoning and stance behind the abolition of gay marriages.

^^I must ask, have you been under a rock? For the past two weeks people have been explaining this phenomenon on tv, in newspapers, on the radio. The people in the South and Midwest voted on values rather the a fiscally conservative agenda. This was a shock to the nation as you remember, the silent majority came out and voted on faith and values.

I am also a staunch supporter of the first amendment, and I do not think it has been compromised at all. Let me ask you this, can you say, right, declare the same things that you could 4 years ago? Have you said something wrong that has had John Ashcroft with a microphone up your ass? Really, you can say whatever you damn well please, you are still protected by our constitution. And if it came down to the patriot act v. first amendment in the supreme court, the 1st amendment would prevail regardless of the justices.

As for the flag, there is a pride down here that is hard to explain, one that is very unique to this part of the nation. The flag has nothing to do with slaver, hatred, racism, and if you were to come down here you would notice that. The flag stands for heritage, history, remembrance for fallen ancestors, pride in the fact that when we were being oppressed by the North that we did not tolerate it. It is a flag of strength and not hate. It has nothing to do with being separatist currently. It is sad that individuals have intertwined the the flag with racism, but it is simply not true for the vast majority. I

Honestly, I don't know why northern democrats complain about the confederate flag being used down south just because it's a symbol of separatism. You guys don't WANT to get rid of the south? Really? Because you might actually win an election if you got rid of a few red states. If I was going to redraw national borders, I doubt the south would stay connected to the north.

But really, I just want the west coast to separate from the rest of the continent. That would be pretty sweet... BC, AB, Cali, WA, AK and OR. Best skiing country ever.

Give me a good reason for your opposition to gay marriage.
