A True Athlete

Goggins is such a badass. If you go to his blog (I think it's called "Show No Weakness" or something) you'll see how hard he is. He's also a little fucked up, but damned if it isn't awesome.
I'm really sorry he didn't do the RAAM.

i wouldnt call him a true athlete. whats his top speed? vertical jump? max strength? level of coordination?

dude has rediculous mental toughness, and eendurance, but i wouldnt call him a great athlete from what was just shown

you need to stop talking. how many other people in this world can do what he does?
I don't care what anyone else thinks, but that is one of the most intense things i've seen in a long time.

im pretty sure that i just listed them:

to be a world class athlete you need to have a combination of world class speed, strength, explosivness, and coordination.

That dude just shoes intense mental fortitude and endurance. i dont see whats so hard to understand about what im saying?

Nothing was misunderstood. Not sure why you would think anything was. I asked you to tell me what your qualifications were for a "true athlete," I just didn't think you were retarded enough to think that "top speed, vertical jump, max strength, and level of coordination" are the four total factors that constitute what a true athlete is.

I kind of agree with californiagrown... Not to diminish the fact that Goggins is a fucking champ, because he is, but calling him a true athlete is a little far.
It's kind of like saying that the perfect basketball player is the guy that can sink shots from anywhere on the court. It takes some serious talent to do that, but you can't be a truly great player without also being good at all the other facets of basketball.
Being well rounded > being really, really good at one thing.

wow, no need for the name calling. Did i strike a nerve or something? the mature thing to do would have been to disagree with me, and then explain your qualifications for a "true athlete".

Can an olympic marathon runner bench as much as an NFL football player? Can Usain Bolt hit a baseball like Ichiro? Could Drogba take down a world champion boxer in a ring? No, I didn't think so.

do you consider usain bolt a world class athlete?

im willing to bet that he couldnt run a marathon and finish in the top 50%

and straight up usain could not run a 150 mile run, at all. he couldnt do it. neither could anyone else you probably consider world class.

ultra long distance running is entirely different from sprinting, or football or wrestling or whatever

that is redic, i didnt think that it was possible for a human to be able to run 3 times a day and still want to do that same thing the next day, thats an inspiration.

Anyone who can do this:
(+K for embed) in eight minutes and run 135miles through death valley in 25 hours is an athlete in my book.

I've got a friend that does ultra marathons... Usually 100ks...
He said that most of the people fill their water bottles with water and painkillers so that everyone is high on percocet for about 30 hours and then you pretty much don't move the next day.

haha hes a navy seal, pretty sure hes not a pussy. im sure his vertical jump, max strength (used to be a power lifter) and level of coordination are all excellent

cant become a navy seal by bein a weakling

not shameless, he runs to raise money for the wounded warrior project. Propaganda for a purpose if you ask me.

this is a discussion. you can agree or disagree, but the facts i present are facts, not opinions.
according to the New Oxford American Dictionary, an athlete is "a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise, specifically an athlete is defined as "a person who is skilled in competitive track and field events (athletics) - the sport of competing in track and field events, including running races and various competitions in jumping and throwing. but history has slowly adapted the definition of athletes and athletics.
a skier is a person who skis. a field hockey player is a person who plays field hockey. a football player is a person who plays football. a gymnast is a person who does gymnastics. a soccer player is a person who plays soccer. a volleyball player is a person who plays volleyball. a tennis player is a person who plays tennis. the list of sports can go on and on. basketball, bowling, fencing, hockey, swimming, wrestling, baseball/softball, golf, lacrosse, ultimate...
recently, as in not ancient greece, athletes have been defined by a list of characteristics that track and field athletes of the past exhibited. essentially, a true athlete in today's world is faster, stronger, higher than his competitors.
so by definition, the best athlete would be either Michael Johnson (400m), David Rudisha (800m), El G (800/1500m) or Haile Gebrselassie (1500/Marathon), with Kenenisa Bekele in a second tier.
now, everybody is going to complain, but the facts are facts. if you want to say a runner is wimp, look at some bigger guys like Alan Webb, who is probably stronger than your average D2/D3 college football safety. in fact, it has been tested and resolved that on average, track athletes are stronger than football players, based on pushups, bench press, and squats (now you are faced with discriminating between a qb, rb, wr, o-line, d-line, lb, cb, safety). also look up chris solinsky. at 6-1, 165 pounds, he is a behemoth on the track. this dude can run 4:23 miles for 6 miles, 4:15 miles for 3.1 miles. and this guy is a jacked mofo.
now for opinion, the best athlete would either come from cross country skiing, gymnastics, 5k-10k runner pool, or a linebacker.

it's amazing to explore the mental barrier that humans put on their own exertion

i never understood it until i started rowing, but even that is nothing compared to what this guy does. it's just cool to feel your body overcome the intense pressure from your mind to stop exerting and no matter what you're doing you can always do a little more

hahahahahaaa man i cant just snap pics. i gotta wait for round two, which might be a little more involved..

i think that a truly great athlete should be able to play any sport at a D1 college level. Obviously different sports require different training, but a great athlete would be great at any sport he tried.

you have to have some god given ailities that cannot be trained- natural strength, explosivness, coordination, natural speed.

for the most part, endurance can be trained, and mental toughness is something that is developed. frankly, i think that being fast over long distance takes the least amount of god given ability, but requires the most training and mental toughness.

ya, i would agree that this guy is a great athlete. I would be curious to know how coordinated he is, but the fact that he is great at that many disciplines in T&F means he probly would play baseball pretty well.

Im not trying to take anything away from Mr. Eaton, but T&F doesnt recruit the physical freaks like football and basketball does. Especially in a discipline like decathalon or heptathalon where an all around athlete is needed, most of the great all around athletes play the sports that actually pay, and get them rich.

I have always wondered how good the US would be at soccer if that was our primary sport.

hopefully man, i would like to see eaton do well i know he didnt do well at the olympic trails but i guess that was a few years ago so theres definitely improvement since. oregon's got one of the sickest track programs in the nation. id kill to be in the program. ha instead im stuck at a school where track is looked on as the joke sport. and yet.. here i am competing against BU, BC, UNH, UMASS, Harvard, UVM, Maine, UCONN, URI, etc. on a regular basis, while the other sports complete against just schools in our D2 northeast 10 conference... such a joke. sorry end rant

i have the utmost respect for runners simply because i know what they go through, the level of determination that is necessary etc...

David Klech, heptathlon.
also, one misconceived fact is that runners are uncoordinated. we might not have the hand-eye coordination of a baseball player or a pianist (not an athlete, but a person that has exceptional hand-eye coordination), but our coordination is on par with most professional football players. we do similar drills as football players. we do speed ladders, hurdle drills, dynamic stretching ...
and olympic tier runners are not just out there running. all hit the weight room in some fashion. while we might not be benching twice our weight, we are surely benching at least half our weight, with twice as many reps. and our core and abs are definitely more toned than many other sports. the core of a runner is equal to a core of a MMA fighter.
but i will still give the upper hand to gymnast and linebackers, and whoever i mentioned before.

reduced easier training that nearly forced bear grylls of all people...to tears.

Escape to the Legion, easily one of the best programs I've watched. It also erases the "bear grylls is a fake pussy" idea, because quite frankly, if les stroud had been on the show, he probably would have balled up and started crying underneath his bunk on day 2.

I agree that Les would not have survived, however Les actually shows you how to survive. Not sprint through the jungle and dive off cliffs which could potentially cause you another whole world of trouble.

Decath, soooo mofo hard

and he averaged just under 14 mins a mile, that just about walking, a slow slow pace

A 150 mile race at that pace is about mental toughness and pushing through it

if you look at some other posts i think he runs low 4 minute miles

over 150 miles you probably just cant do much better than 14 minutes a mile

its probably nearly impossible.
