A thread about Sarah and the risks of the sport

get where youre coming from but what about the feeling of stomping said trick? now isn't that living? its the same thing as a rock climber/base jumper/etc etc etc. for some people pushing yourself IS living. IMO living isnt just breathing and having bodily functions its discovering yourself and doing the things that make you happy.

having great sex with someone you love is a way better feeling. i imagine seeing your kids grow up, and ball out would be a damn good feeling etc. there is so much that i have yet to experience.

you can do both. just be aware of the risks that you are taking, and remeber that just because it hasnt happened yet, doesnt mean it wont happen

I think there is a difference between pushing the limits in whatever you choose to do vs creating a safe environment in a sanctioned sport. For example if you love hucking big cliffs and that's ur passion I say go for it and be responsible for your own safety. We really don't need rules against such things. However within an organized sport I think there is a responsibility on the part of athletes and organizers to keep it safe within reason. For example race cars have new safety measures after the deaths of famous drivers like Dale Earnhardt or senna. (Btw go watch the movie senna if you haven't). Or football has put in rules to reduce the number of hits to the head. Hell hockey players didnt wear helmets until the past couple decades bc they thought it was unmanly There was a lot of backlash against all of these rules but now they seem like the obvious right thing to do.

Now I don't think super pipe is so dangerous that the rules need to change (yet). It seems like sarahs accident was a freak accident that happened after a somewhat routine fall. I do wonder if there should be padding on the deck to prevent injuries like the one that kevin Pearce got. I dunno. It wouldn't take away from the excitement from the viewers point of view and it might save a career here and there.

Limits aren't necessarily a bad thing. Let's take a look at diving. In the Olympics the highest dive is 10m. Outside of the sanctioned sport people jump off way higher cliffs. If people want to cliff dive that is great. But in the sanctioned version of the sport there are limits to reduce the possibility of injury and hopefully eliminate death. Perhaps that is the happy medium we need to find. But like some have mentioned before. You can trip on the bunny slope and kill yourself. So we will never be able to eliminate death from sport. But perhaps it's ok to consider ways to reduce the chances especially if we are now part of a sanctioned Olympic sport.

I think the OP is spot on here..... I don't really have much to say other then that in risk of offending anyone.

Skiing is a risky sport and i am passionate about it and so was she and ifeel that it is worth the risk of possibly dying for it becuase i love it that much!

Yeah all i can say is that i don't envy pros at all nowadays, they have to push the limit so much.

that and no matter how hard you push yourself, be safe everyone, not many things are worth injuring your head. RIP sarah burke, you were way too young and amazing to go now

i thought we all understood that we could get seriously hurt or die skiing. like i'm pretty sure that if you ski you've signed something before that says you acknowledge that skiing can seriously fuck you up.
