A Local Heroin Epidemic

I just got off the phone with my girlfriend. Her best friend is in the hospital, recovering from a heroin overdose. We had no fucking idea she was doing that shit. Shes lucky to be alive. There have been 40 Opiate related overdose deaths in Western Massachusetts alone since December.

Opiate abuse and addiction has shot up (NPI) across Massachusetts within the last few years. In my town alone, the line outside the methadone clinic is a block long every morning, The needle exchange runs out in a day and shuts down for the rest of the week. Local Rehabs and detox centers are overflowing.

Local Dealers are getting Scarface rich simply because the demand is so high around here. Interstate 91 has been nicknamed the 'Heroin Highway' because dealers buy dope in the cities down south, cut it up and then go north to Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine and sell it for up to three times the price there. Whats more is that Junkies are dropping like flies because alot of these dealers cut their dope with Fentanyl so that they can say to their clients that they have the most fire shit around.

Part of me just wants to say fuck 'em. Natural selection. I hate Junkies with a passion. They have no soul, because Heroin took it from them....Making them into a lying, stealing shithead who would sell their grandmother for a bag. But the most disturbing part of the whole shitshow is that most of the addicts aren't homeless scumbags, they're fucking kids. College Students, People from loving caring families, folks I went to high school with, kids that are barely into their teens. I know at least a dozen people who have some sort of opiate habit.

I feel like there has to be other places where this is happening, not just in my neck of the woods.

What the fuck?

In my hometown, lots of local fast food/coffee places dim the lights in the bathrooms so people can't see their veins and shoot up.

its happening all over the us and has been building for years. you can thank purdue and the federal government for basically creating this epidemic. saw it coming a mile away.

I live in Springfield. Cheapest dope in the country is in Holyoke and now the fentanyl is killing junkies left and right.

Fuck opiates.

there has been a ridiculous amount of heroin related deaths and other shit like that here in MN. Don't know why or how, but it's constantly coming up in the news.

Thats complete bullshit, in boulder i knew a ton of people that were into it, i thought that too until i met one, and once you meet one you meet tons of them.

Who gets addicted to H?

Its 2014 people should know better.

And I like drugs and getting fucked up but shooting H is just not chill.

That meme is so fucking gay, but you can't hate on Alex Supertramp so i don't know what the fuck i should do

I hear you, but that whole area is pretty damn fucked from what I remember. I live just outside of Nashua NH on the MA side and the kids are getting into pills big time and moving away/mixing that shit with weed and booze big time. Or were when I graduated HS last year. No idea how it's going but I imagine it's pretty damn bad there or close to it.

Also there was an article in the NYT about how Rutland VT is having a huge heroin problem. One of my good buddies at school is from Rutland and said that the junkies come for the free methadone high and needles every day at the clinics.

Fuck heroin and hard drugs. It's terrible watching lives getting ripped apart and wondering which kids in my graduating class will be dead within 10 years.

Bruuu business op..

pick up a 45 and take care of da comp

pick up what they drop and run a monopoly on that shit...

scarface rich ya dig?

How the fuck do people honestly put something into their body which they know will destroy them? Kush and molly are different because addiction can't really happen (don't come back with oh my bestfriend is addicted to weed, people are addicted to coca cola for fuck sake), what goes through someones mind when they want to do herion or meth. It's purely fucked

They don't care.

Look its time people stop putting the blame on the drugs. Its the people who let themselves get addicted and have their lives revolve around getting high that are the problem its not the drug its the person.

Just laugh at people like that for being stupid they don't deserve sympathy and I like drugs.

Oh sweet lord, please tell me how you use heroin recreationally. That will just make my day when I wake up this morning. And that's awful OP, im sorry but i'm really glad I cant relate.

A lot of people have an injury, can't come off the oxy and then get hooked on heroin because it's cheaper.

It's really too bad.

fuck those people that say, I'll only try it once. because you do it once and thats it, game over. Vibes for her friend but maybe know she'll know to keep her habit to the ganja and far away from the other jazz

It's become a huge issue here in Maine as well. The reason it's so big here is that it actually became cheaper than the oxy and fentanyl that all of the pill heads here used to be addicted to. People have been dropping like flies here too, and as you mentioned, it's because the shit is cut. A 17 year old high school kid who was very well known in the area I'm from died from an overdose here over the summer, after buying and using cut heroin in a McDonalds bathroom. As you said, he had a loving, middle-class family and a huge friend network.

Such an ugly drug.

There's a lot of bad shit in Western, MA moving up through VT and NH. Western, MA especially was hit so hard with deindustrialization in towns like Turners Falls that there's a ton of rural poverty that people are dealing with and very few job availabilities. In my area of VT if you don't work some form of self-employed manual labor job you're pretty much shit out of luck for making decent money

Parts of mass have been fucked for a while. Also that route you speak of has been flowing for years.

Sucks though. You'd think we as a country would have jumped off the prohibition bandwagon and started pushing better education and treatment.

We don't have real drug education in this country. The money going in to drug education programs is being wasted. Also the amount of money we spend each year on the drug war is fucking mind blowing. If we put even a tiny bit of that into treatment.

Unfortunately groups with $$$ will always win out over the individual, at least at this point in time in America.

Inb4 you're ignorant and the "molly" you dabble in is not in any way MDMA but methylone, mephedrone, meth, or other things.

There's no way I can no for sure obviously but there's a pretty good chance that's the case. Tired of all these ignorant self righteous children these days.

Ignorant kids judging other people, nothing better right?

You can blame the user, you can blame the drug, but that is not going to solve the problem. Heroin has become a huge epidemic and what people need to focus on now is how to 1. Help and treat the current addicts and 2. Prevent people from using the drug.

I'm from a tiny town in north central ohio, pretty rural, and when I was in high school Oprah's show came to our town and did an episode on the heroin epidemic here. That was in 2008!

It's still a huge problem, I recently found out that one of my best friend's sisters has become addicted to heroin. She has two kids and was being held in jail. The jails had to release her because they're too full of addicts. She's apparently started stealing and selling everything off. The worst of it all is she doesn't think anythings wrong, as my friend says "She's not a person anymore, she's just an addict." I thought that was very harsh, but it's the harsh reality.

Also, I took a class on the History of the American Criminal Justice System and this was one of the books we had to read. It's called The Fix by Michael Massing. If anyone has got some spare time I highly suggest reading it. In a nut shell it explains from the perspective of a treatment center's director (former addict) and the political side how America's drug problem has gotten out of hand. I highly suggest reading it as it opens your eyes to why our country views certain drugs under certain classifications and the battle between treatment vs imprisonment.

Well i'm all for natural selection so if somebody I don't know dies of it because they were too fucking stupid to realize what they were doing was retarded then meh, i couldn't give a shit. Plus i'm too much of a pussy to inject myself with it so i'm good.

Because you've never made a bad choice?

People like you are awesome. You will just sit on your high horse until something happens to somebody close to you and then you'll realize how ridiculous your views were.

Yup shit is insane, although I had no idea about its impact in Western MA. I go to school in that area but am originally from the the North Shore (represent) and that area got hit hard, especially how I hear a lot of it is shipped into Gloucester.

it's sad to see, really. I people who are trying hard shit because they are worried about weed showing up on a drug test.

yall need to come to southern vermont. its easier to get heroin than weed.. and cheaperdont fuck with that shit.

Seems like the north east in general is being affected. Southern Maine is getting bad. One of my friends dads just lost his kids because of his heroin addiction. Sad.

A big side effect of this epidemic is more crime. A huge increase in petty theft, B&Es, assaults, etc. have come about because of this addiction.

To all those saying it is a process of natural selection, what about an unfortunate man/woman/child who is hurt or killed in an attempted robbery to gain money for their addiction?

This problem goes much further than just a simple addiction. It has societal consequences that affect a much larger group.

do people actually do this?

There are lots of reasons why people might try heroin, but I didn't think using it as weed alternative was one of them. Most people would just have a beer.

It is not a local epidemic. My best friend passed away a month ago, and a good friend passed away exactly a year ago tomorrow as well. Everyone in my home town did that shit, and I grew up in an middle-upper class town on the coast of California. I have gotten away from that shit and moved up to Tahoe, but trust me the epidemic is widespread.

the NWC is so full of dope its bad... I was heavy into pills for a while last year and I'm glad I cleaned up now that I see how much dope is around.

Honestly I would do heroin before I would fuck with spice, and that shit seems to be pretty common.

Also heroin has been heavily demonized. Look at all the people doing pharmies. Not saying that doesn't have a bad rap either but it's hell of a lot better than the evil heroin.

There are people who will spend stupid amounts of money on pills to shoot over heroin because heroin is bad but pills aren't.

You have pharmy companies raking in shit tons of money, lobbying the government, getting what they want then you have people that were selling heroin getting locked up and rotting in prison.

Also if we ended the fucking drug war you wouldn't have questionable batches going around, people would know that the product they had was clean and what purity it was.
