A little bit of beer education

Finally finished my last Hex the other night.

IPAs are definitely something that you seem to grow into. When I first started drinking beer i hated any ipa. Now after a few years and sampling as many beers as I could get my hands on, I'm really starting to like them.

As a poor college student in BC, i drink wildcat. 15 pack for $22 and 6.1%? I'll take it for now.

i was this close (holds up fingers very close together) to buying a 40 of olde english last night... but i didnt. i think i might tonight..

Just bought this the other day. I'm excited to open it up after my last final tomorrow and try it out.

I love rogue, but this was nasty. My favorite beer is deschutes red chair. Going on sale again in january!

#9 is 'meh'. Sorry, Vermont folks, but it's just weak. I mean, it's not bad on a warm day, I suppose, but there are so many better options out there - many that don't come out all skunky too...

It was an awful introduction for me to east coast beer, too... I've since had many different beers from back east, especially Vermont, and I can't believe this is the one everyone tells me that I 'have to try'. Very average and massively overhyped.

good choice !

Last week i visited a friend in Innsbruck (Austria) and brought him a crate of lachouffe, he was so goddamn happy ! :)

As a Belgian i simply have too much beers to list, however these two are my go-to beers when i don't know what to drink ....

duvel.jpg

a strong blonde beer with 8.5% and a bittersweet taste

leffe-bruin.jpg

a light brown beer with a fruity caramel taste that drinks very easily 6.5%

oh and Omer is also pretty good, similar to duvel but drinks a lot easier and is a bit lighter ....

Have you had a chance to get some American beers? I'm interested on a European's perspective of some of the better craft brews we are brewing over here.

no, i'd really love to try some local brews tough, can't really imagine they are so much worst .... i even expect they'd be on a same level as some of ours ....

trying to get this for my dad for christmas. ottawa lcbos sold out first thing yeterday, ancaster hasn't gotten them so i'm sending my sister.

if you know then god damn you just know.

i always reserve a pack straight from the brewery :)they're pretty hard to get, even in belgium ....

Agreed - when I first started with Magic Hat I was a huge #9 fan - but it quickly faded as I realized it wasn't all I hyped it up to be. Its moved way down on my list of good beers.

I have to agree. I mean I don't think it's the worst thing ever, but it's def not all it's cracked up to be. It's so over hyped you'd think it was the best beer ever by miles and miles. It's one of those beers where that's all you hear about. Omg, magic hat number 9, omg omg.

They sponsored the 2 snoe.downs in rutland in 2010, 11. Not sure what I drank though. I found one of them that worked alright for me I think. Then again, usually I drink a lot before the shows, and drink minimally at the show to save loot. We kept a 30 rack in a shopping cart behind walmart one year= I'm a classy dude.

Yeah, I mean it's far better than lots of other crappy american style pale lagers out there, but god damn, it's really not what it's made out to be. I'd take a Sam Adams BL any day over a #9.

Meanwhile, you go west and the beer you hear about all day is Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale... which is probably one of the top 10-20 beers in the APA category... right up there with Deschutes Red Chair and Great Divide's Fresh Hop. I just don't understand where #9 gets so much stoke. I mean, it's not much better than say a Blue Moon... (yeah, I fuckin went there haha)

this is how it is served at any irish pub in seattle and a lot of other bars, too. You can get it like this in the states.

I like new belgium's sunshine, but i drink coors light 99.9% of the time. If they don't have coors light I try for amstel.

If you drink silver bullets 99.9% of the time, and the other .1% of the time you drink an amstel?

...you might be a redneck with an affinity for the dutch.

I agree with this 100%. After living in Vermont for the past 3 years I have found out that Magic Hat is sup par compared to a lot of the other beers that come out of Vermont. If you ever head back to Vermont try Fiddlehead fairly new company with great Beer. Their IPA is one of my favorites right now.
