A grim future

Today in my weather class the professor told as the because of global warming, snow levels will go higher and higher. A rise of 3 degrees (F or C, I don't remember) causes the freezing level to go up about 1000 ft. So in about 2045, my local mountain won't provide much skiing terrain.

did he mention that there is some serious doubt about the vailidity of global warming? Accurate weather analysis has only been done for the past 100-150 years. That short of a period of time (considering that the earth is billions of years old, and it's been tens of thousands of years since the last ice age) isn't long enough to determine whether there is an actual human-caused change to weather patterns, or if it's just a natural cycle.

au contraire yeti, we have accurate weather analysis dating all the way back millions of years. here at uc davis, we have one of the top labs in the world to study historic climates through fossilized microorganisms. just look at the rise in CO2 since the start of the industrial age and the correlating rise in avg global surface temps. global warming is only doubted by ignorant right winging republicans and big oil.

LOL how can we have recorded weather patterns from millions of years ago? Did the amoeba type up the daily weather on their little amoeba-computers?

and since i am neither a republican nor a big oil company, you best be adding a third category in there ;-)

microorganisms and ice cores can tell us the exact CO2 level on earth at the time they lived . . . and there are many other tools to determine the ice cover of the earth at the time and the types of vegetation in different regions of the earth, from which you can determine, roughly, the surface temperatures at the time. Therefore you can plot the correlation between the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and avg surface temps. simple

My weather professor is a skier, and he sometimes goes backcountry skiing. I think that's why he's mentioned snow as often as he has.

so you're telling me that there haven't been any weather patterns during the past million years, and everything is just happening spontaneously...NO. Therefore, until more time has passed, we won't know if this is just a cycle or if it's all our fault.

either way, i think that we should do our part in keeping the planet clean, we should stop cutting down tress without reforestation, we should clean emisions and use alternate energey sources, dosnt that make sense. i mean it may cost some cash, but in the end i think it will be worth while, cause

actually I have heard theories about how the melting ice caps from global warming with be messing with the ocean curent patterns and will keep the weather in Canada alot cooler that in has been the last while...just what I have heard...dont hunt me down if it doesnt happen

when did I say there haven't been weather patterns?? of course there have been weather patterns for the past 2 million years. the earth has gone in and out of ice ages over that whole time span. we're due to go into another ice age within the next thousand years or so. we can easily see how increased CO2 concentrations have led to increased surface temperatures over history. that is what is happening right now. it is not hard to see. but like they say, ignorance is bliss

the only thing thats constant about nature is that it's not. if you had a bad snow year this year you can be pretty sure you'll have a good one in the next year or so. i think it's just the natural rise and fall of the tempaures. and i heard somthing a few days ago on the news that the ice caps are actualy getting thicker.

you now whats funny? to most people, an ice age scares the shit out of them. most of us on here are praying for one. i dunno, i just think thats kinda funny.

my science teacher said that this little bit of global warming could indicate a new ice age. And also while we should alwas be trying to cut down on Co2 emmisions, the money from kyoto would of been better spent on improving Africa's enviromental controls. Africa produces the most CO2 and because of their low level of governemnt controls their enviromental controls are as bad as they were in the industriel revolution.

All I know another Ice Age would be so sweet, other than the fact we would all starve. Global Warming, boo!

Yeah I am no believer of global warming myself. The only way I look at it is the earth has been warming up since the last ice age.

And right there you have enough information to not put all the blame on a 'warming trend' onto global warming.

The US produces by far the most CO2 of any country

jesus christ, the bush administration ITSELF just published a report in which they finally admitted that global warming is real and humans are undoubtedly responsible. if they're convinced, I don't see how anyone can still think global warming is a myth.

The Bush Administration recently released a statement that there is global warming happening. O'Reilly also had something about it today.

oh what, did oreily play it off as a huge liberal conspiracy or some other conservative bs?

no africa does, think of it a large resource based continent with abosolutely no government regulations on industry. Kyoto might not be a bad thing but it's money that could be better spent elsewhere in the enviroment.

in science i was reading some that even though there are like 10 ppl+ to a family in Africa vs. like3-4+ ppl per family in the US, the US family produces way more pollution than the African family

Trying is the First Step to Failure.~Homer~

iwantstomp is right, fuckin the us has the second largest co2 emisons next to singapore in first, save the envirment even if global warming is a trend, thing about it, if co2 emsions continute the acidy of rain/snow may increase to a point where it could burn you (a slight exageration but hey its possible) there is no reason to dystroy the planet when we can keep it clean

*JaSoN*

exactly. even the crackpots who still think global warming is a myth, there's no reason to keep polluting like we are. if pollution doesn't cause climate change, it is still bad for our health and ugly as hell. we can sit back on our asses and pray to god that we're in the one in a hundred chance we're not causing change, or we can do something about it now. and natural or unnatural, it's still gonna change the world we live in. there's no reason not to work NOW to cut our emissions. sorry for the rambling
