A good reason why people should own guns

it's very long, but crazy all the same. Sparknotes for those without the time: Woman calls police, needs cops to come to her house because a man is breaking in. She is alone and the whole time she is saying how she has a shotgun and doesn't want to have to shoot the man. They guy breaks in, cops aren't there, and she shoots him. she starts crying and asking god to forgive her. Cops show up about 25 minutes later.

If she had a can of mace and a gun she could have repelled the man breaking in and not killed anyone. So everyone should own a can of mace.

sometimes a can of mace isn't enough. You have the right to protect yourself. Calling the police is always a great idea, but, like in this situation, it can take forever for the police to show up. They took almost half an hour to get to her house, and sometimes they don't show up at all. This poor woman was all alone with no one to help her out. Her husband was at work, her son out of town, and her neighbors were all over 80 years old. I congratulate her for having the courage to defend herself.

i cant imagine being put in that position but the bottomline is i will defend myself

luckily for me and anyone breaking in though, i'm young and still pretty capable without guns

thats why she should have had a can of mace and a gun.

I can't think of a situation where a can of bear mace sitting by the front door would not stop anyone. You can shoot that shit like 20 feet. I guess if the guy had a gun you would be in trouble. But again, can of mace, and a gun.

If someone broke into my house and threatened to hurt me of my family I could shoot them without a problem. Sometimes gun ownership is def. good.

clearly you didn't listen to the call. What would you propose she do? lay down and let this guy have free reign over her body and property? jesus christ, what the fuck are you supposed to do in that situation if you can't protect yourself?

this is a very isolated situation, but i think IN GENERAL people would be safer is there were less guns available for "protection"

what the hell are you talking about, a very isolated situation? this shit happens every single day....are you serious? Who is going to defend you when the police don't show up? You are completely mental if you think that people should be able to own guns for hunting but not for personal protection. Seriously, that is the most backwards logic I've ever heard.

and thanks for that post, i'd seen a shorter version in another forum and heard about a long version, listening to it now

What he is saying is that in general most situations can be resolved using non deadly force as opposed to a direct escalation to gun violence. The US leads the richest nations by a significant factor in gun related deaths. Also there are about 1,500 accidental deaths a year from guns, pretty low but the idea is not to outlaw guns but look for non deadly solutions. Like bear mace.

I could rewrite this story with her using an alarm system and a can of BEAR MACE to defuse the situation with no loss of life.

everyone should have a sword, chop off an arm or a legg and the threath will be immediately eliminated, sparing everyones life...

You call it gun violence, I call it protection. Gun violence is when some thug, who got hold of a gun ILLEGALLY, goes and shoots up a 7-11 for a bag of funyuns and a 40oz. Agree to disagree.

It's a nice deterrence though. You don't even really need a bullet in a pump action shotgun. That sound is loud and terrifying, anyone with half a brain would get the hell out of there if she pumped it.

agreed but where do you think those guns come from? here in NYC its not uncommon at all that you see people getting arrested with guns that are traced back to trade shows in North Carolina, Virginia etc... that were purchased legally and then resold.

i see your reasoning and logic here and yes, i agree in this case a thing of mace would have stopped the intruder. But what if the intruder had a gun as well, certainly the mace would temporarily disable the theif, but a gun in the hand of a desperate person is a extreme danger.

I believe this lady did the right thing, what she did is completely legal and i would have done the same thing in that situation.

I just think as using guns as a last resort should be the norm.

Are you kidding me? I just listened to that thing and you are fucking crazy. The guy was drunk and confused and probably had mental disability. There were many non violent options she could have pursued. She never even said go away or anything. I am fine with her using the gun after he breaks through the door but why didn't she even yell at him to go away?

I guarantee if you talk to her should would have much preferred that she would have had a can of mace. I bet she regrets every day that she had to kill a man. You are out of your mind.

a kid in a town near by was home alone

a robber broke in and the kid grabbed a knife and, well i dont remember, but he either stabbed the guy or scared him off.

man thats crazy...cant even imagine taking another humans life, but if it had to be done for your own safety then you gotta do it....feel bad for that woman =\

that is exactly the reason every one should own guns, what if the robber had a gun and she didnt, she would have been screwed.. maby literaly.. but what if she had a can of mase.. it would have just pissed the guy off more and he could have possibly peed in her butt.... that would be horrible

You pussy tree-hugging gun-haters. Guess what, you come into my house, and I don't want you there, you're getting shot. I'll ask questions later. I don't give a crap if you're drunk, stoned, or just retarded. I applaud this lady for protecting herself and property.

do you HONESTLY think that banning guns would stop suicides? or that Cobain would still be alive?

Dear god, NS is dumber than I ever imagined.

I think she probably could have threatened the man to go away first. Point the gun at him and say if you come into this house I will shoot. THat might have held him off longer. That is of course if he didn't have a gun. Which it didn't sound like. I'm surprised about how calm she was the entire time and polite with the radio women. I'd been cursin a storm up tellin her to get her ass down here

she basically sniped him off her front porch, the guy probably didn't know anyone was inside. For god sakes the bum was so drunk he probably thought it was his house.

you're not gonna stop an armed gunman with a can of mace, if someone broke into my home and tried to hurt me or my family i would have no hesitation of shooting him. why the hell should we care about the loss of a life of a criminal who has no problem harming innocent people.
criminals are always going to have guns regardless of the law, a law banning guns would be essentially helping out the criminals.
and i don't know what you're saying about this "escalation of violence" if someone breaks into someones house and they shoot them; thats it.... it doesn't somehow become some high octane Hollywood gun fight.

Please reread my posts.

Never said anything about outlawing guns or even preventing people from having guns. This guy was not an armed gun man, he was a drunk bum who probably didn't even know where he was. Mace would have completely dominated him.

I think the problem is you guys have never been maced, I sprayed this bear mace and there was a very slight, almost undetectable breeze coming at me. I puked and couldn't see for about 1/2 an hour. It was horrible.

I am only suggesting that guns become a last resort. If she would have seen a gun on the guy it would have been a different story.

So read my posts again 1) never said we should outlaw guns, just better control, penalties, and responsibility with them. 2) Escalation is pulling out the gun, this situation wen from a guy banging on her window and breaking it to her lighting him up with a shot gun. Escalation.

(also in countries where guns are extremely well controlled the gun violence, even with criminals who by your logic should all be packing, is orders or magnitude less than the US. Not saying we should do this, just something to think about.)

Drugs are illegal and they are just as prevalent as ever. Making guns illegal would really only hurt people that have legitimate reasons for guns. Somebody that want's to break the law with it won't have much trouble obtaining one and the law really won't bother his conscience

A say keeping a supply of bear mace and a gun is a double win.

No shit. I keep a my shot gun, and my .22, in my room unloaded but with rounds nearby. If somebody is dumb enough to break into my house I'm aiming below the waist, as long as you shoot below the waist it's not a lethal shot and self defense.

I shouldnt need a good reason to own a gun, it is my right to own one, with or without reason
I want one so why shouldnt I have one. Someone broke into my house after my sister with a gun when she was home alone, Threw a rock through our french glass doors and went to her bedroom and stuck the gun in her face. Luckily he got scared (he chickened out on some other girls houses to around that time) because she was on the phone with the cops. But now there is a gun in every bed room in this house. If someone breaks in again they arent leaving,
So yeah I have a reason but then again I shouldn't need one...

Just saying... there have been plenty of cases where a criminal broke in someones house got shot and then sued the homeowner and won. So if you can live with the mental repercussions the lethal shot is cheaper. I'm not advocating killing people but it is just something you have to think about, also if they get out of the house after you shot them you can be in big trouble to0, I believe someone was charged criminally in a case that this happened.
And yes I hope everyone realizes how messed up that is. How do you get a jury stupid enough to award the criminal damages when he broke in your house and got shot.

well, in a civil suit or criminal court? because that would make a big difference. its in my rights to own a gun, and as soon as i am legal and have the proper qualifications, i am buying one

Thank you, people who live in there sheltered lives don't realize that this stuff happens to good people every day.

Owning a gun is every ones right unless they break the law and have that right taken from them. If you choose not to own a gun that is perfectly fine, just don't even waste your breath trying to tell me that I can't defend myself, my home, or my family.

A browning automatic rifle in every house. shotguns for every sort of game with fishing pole and pocket knife in your pack. Equip you with these things and you will be SONS OF THE MOST HIGH!!!
