A good edge sharpener

yeah the swix one(i forget what its called) that goes for like $45 is really good, you can set what degrees you want your edges to be, so you can sharpen the tips like 90 degrees and the rail part underfoot at like 85 or 86. its really sweet, its like red, sorry i forget the name

Krongs I assume you mean base edge when speaking of 85 or 86 underfoot? that would be a 4 or 5 degree base edge, everyone but swix for some reason counts up from 0 for base edges.

yeah swix is weird... I would get a diamond whetstone (as mentioned by CTripper). usually you can get these in a set with the apparatus and several different platforms that vary the degree. I would also recommend that you have a gummi stone on hand to remove burrs and detune if you are catching edges. But if you really wanna go big just get a wintersteiger machine, then you can do you and your friends skis for only, oh, $5,000.

check out some of these websites:

www.drzags.com - generally good deals, look under diamond edge tools

www.race-werks.com - good stuff but expensive

just do a search for em. But if you are really lookin to do a good home tune on your stuff, you will want to invest in more than just an edge sharpener.

5 g's for a winterstieger? you must have the cheap one. The one in our shop costs 40,000, and thats not including the added on trim disc, which is like another 8 or so g's. look at the shuttel pro machine, its like 100,000. I happen to like that new grindrite machine that came out last season, all digital and shit, so nice that you can put checkerboard patterns in skis.

reading the tognar site it talks about diamond stones loading up with wax and base material when deburring. Aren't you just filing the edge? They also mention that when you file your base edges the base becomes higher than the edge. Hw do you fix this?

^ if you do this by hand, that is when you would use a panzer file, but honestly, I'de just have a shop stone grind it out for you. The problem then is that you will have to reset your edge geometry. You'll need files and diamond stones (and possibly even ceramic stones if you really wanna get fancy) and angle guides.

personally, I think the two most overlooked tools in a tuning kit are a gummi stone and a true bar.

I always get a kick out of seeing people that have no clue trying to tune skis. But everyone has to start somewhere, personally, I started tuning when I was about 13 and ruined my Mom's iron, she didn't know I was waxing until the clothes she was ironing were getting awefully shiny.

As far as anlge guides, I would just stick to a quality company and you should be ok. Personally, I think Reliable Racing has a great tool (I have one and a couple other people I ski with do as well), it looks like a normal angle guide, but has replacable files and stones and can set/maintain up to a 3&3 and sets both the base and side bevel at the same time.

If you aren't that comfortable with the tuning equiptment, you might wanna go with a non-adjustable angle guide, should make it a little easier for ya.

are you kidding... of course they cost more than 5g's. But you can get one of the smaller ones used for about that much. the one in our shop is a little older but ran about 30 grand. we also have a real old grindrite which was about 5. I only wish i could use the shuttle 3C and i'm pretty sure its more than 100 grand.
