A few college questions

So I was wondering, do you guys think it would be possible to double major in political science and hospitality management? I ask because i would like to do both, and then go to law school, and then hopefully become an fbi agent. the hospitality management is a fall back for when something doesnt go as planned.

This would be at UNH by the way.

not really sure, im semi sure that you can double major in anything if your willing to put the time in. you most likely will not graduate in 4 year. actually im almost certain of it.

4 years isnt a huge issue for me, and im also pretty much positive of it as well, since i will be transferring after my first year at umf

Who's going to pay for you to go through school for 10 years only to have 1 of 3 degrees be employable?

haha or maybe just stick to one thing cause all those have nothing in common and youll be in school for the rest of your life

well, they dont really need to have that much in common, since one is a back up to the other, just in case my situation changes later in life. i think that doing both majors will add 1 or 2 years tops, since i work pretty damn hard.

id rather it was much different. my parents have both been unemployed numerous times in the insurance industry, the most recent of which was 4 years ago. since then, my father hasnt been able to work due to disability. our home business has yet to make a profit, and dive further into the red each month. my mom recently got a promotion, but no pay increase, just a nicer company car and a lot more traveling on the road.

my dad is going to work with me this summer at a restaurant because he is so bored.

im double major finance sociology and maybe throwing a mionor in political science in if i have the time its really not as bad if you think

first off if you double major you dont need a minor so say you need 6 courses for your minor you might as well take 5 more and get your major in it, thats an additional about 2 credits a semester or 2 hours a week more really not that big of a deal...good luck man and if worst comes to worst take an online course or summer course to get some shit out of the way

o yea make sure you get your distributions done man if they have them at your school and stay on top of your advisor, only really take the classes you need too, my advisor messed me up reall bad so i took so much shit i didnt really need now im stuck takin 16-20 credits a semester

but if done right its is not that much more difficult

if you really want to go to the fbi major in criminal justice and a language, hospitality business won't get you ahead of any BA in that field

most people dont graduate in four years anyways so thats nothing to worry about. if u want to become an fbi agent i think the best way to do that is join the airforce or something like that, and then once u serve your time you can get out and try to come up on that fbi job.

it would definatly be a very difficult thing to do but without a doubt it could be done. you will have to be taking like 21 24 credits per semester which can be pretty tough. its usually easier to double major when your majors are pretty closly related so they have somewhat close to the same core classes. but it could be done if you wanna do that. double majors are extremely diffficult and take alot of time. but if thats what you wanna do then you better go do it. good luck

Political science and hospitality management?

Hospitality management is a major?

hahahhahahaha.

You shouldn't have much of an issue with those two things.

yea my friends buddys dad is an fbi agent... he has a degree in accounting and they hired him them he switched to ferensics (idc how to spell it) when he got there... it depends what their looking for at a specific time then you get hired and switch to sumthin cooler... i doubt this helps but just saying bro

Bingo.

But double majoring isn't too bad. Just do well and I'm sure your school will let you overload on courses.

Please read this:

Let me explain my reasoning.

I would like to become an FBI agent and I would get a degree in poli sci and then go to law school, and then hopefully into the FBI academy.

I that wouldnt work out, I would possibly have a degree in hospitality management (i know, but its more legit than you think) which i could fall back on, and in this job market, its always good to have a back up plan right?

Im rethinking this whole thing at the moment and trying to figure out how i want to achieve my goals. My first year of college is next year, but im going to be undecided because Umaine Farmington doesnt have a major that I want. I will transfer after my first year.

I will post more as i continue to look at options, but thanks for all of the help so far, I know that my degree choices sound retarded.

Alright, I have a new plan.

I think that I will go to UNH and major in political science.

Reasoning: This a pathway for me to go to Georgetown Law, which will help in becoming an FBI special agent.

Also, I will minor in Russian. Reasoning: Russian is one of the languages that the FBI lists as helping with becoming an agent. Ideally I would also major in this, but it isnt as necessary.

Should i become a FBI agent, and later in life decide that i dont want that career anymore, i could always use the law experience to work at a firm or someother place.

What do you guys think?

so law school is just something to fall back on? 3 three years is pretty big back up plan. But if you have the time and money, I guess it works.

not exactly. law is one of the "critical skills" for becoming an fbi agent. should becoming an fbi agent not work out, i would have the law degree to get a different job.

dont stress about picking you major so fast. most people change majors and its no big deal as long as the majors arent completely different. I changed my major twice in my first semester. just take classes in a couple different areas and see what you like best.

just forget the whole hospitality thing. if you have a goal, achieve it, no point in doing more work than you have to in order to not do what you want to do.

your name is skibikeclambake and you think you want to be an fbi agent? i'm pretty sure "agents" don't partake in any of those activiies

if this pertains to the "clambake" portion, it happens to be my summer job. fosters downeast clambake. we are a catering company. cateredanywhere.com

if i were you, i'd be looking at a bigger university with a good liberal arts program. you'd be able to take both classes without declaring a major, get your general requirements for graduation, and then in a year or two decide if you want to focus on one, or double major.

just go for law school. pick one major that you enjoy and can get good marks with. you will be able to minor or even double minor on the side. law schools do not care as much if you majored in poly sci or philosophy anymore. i plan on majoring in english and then going to law school. you just need good marks and then you need to kill your LSAT. you should be fine. but if you focus on doing too many things, you won't do as well with any of them. i recently realized this b/c it has taken me two years to declare my major and now im a bit behind and need to catch up.

I just had a revelation, thanks to your post! I mean, why should I go through 4 years of hard work to get my BA in business, when I could just pay $160,000 to take easy and fun classes!

Fuck, why didn't I think of this sooner?

Well You have a blast with that BA in Business, regardless of the fact if its easy or hard, i would rather do something that i am gonna enjoy for the rest of my life apposed to some shitty office job... so what im not gona be making bank, but at least im gonna enjoy my career...

I never said I don't enjoy business. But you did say to "be a bum" and "shits a joke", referring to your classes.

I'm not going to tell you what to do, but in my opinion you it is irresponsible to take easy classes in college. You're paying for higher education, you shouldn't be paying to take joke classes.

This goes for skipping/going late to class as well.

I go to UVM, and I haven't skipped a class this semester.

Don't get me wrong - I like skiing. But when it comes down to priorities, school comes first. Maybe it's the way I was raised, who knows.

I did the math. Every class I skip, I'm wasting $114 of tuition money.

This guy knows whats up. If you're gonna pay a lot of money for school why fuck around. Its better to work hard now and reap the reward later than to dick around now and regret later.

Common what kind of business do you want to get into?

And to the OP, if you know you want to become an FBI agent and your goal is to go through law school. I'd say do that and forget about hosp. management. Even if the FBI thing doesn't pan out, you still have a law degree.

yeah. next year im going to umf, so i get instate and a really good fin aid package, so if its the right day, i may skip for powder but i understand where youre coming from. I havent missed a day of school in over 8 years. ive gone after undergoing surgery multiple times

My concentration is management & the environment - I want to get into "green" business, such as exploring the opportunities of sustainable energy (wind/solar power). I think that with the Obama stimulus package, I will have no problem finding a job in 4 years when I graduate.
