OFWGKTA: A Passing fad or phenomenon?

What is odd future? One sentence cannot describe this music group, or can it? Odd Future, (otherwise known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or OFWGKTA) is a hip hop collective out of LA that has achieved somewhat of a cult status in some areas.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Know it or not, Odd Future may be influencing your child’s thoughts, emotions, and lifestyle. Currently my little brother is sitting upstairs in his room blasting Tyler the Creators beats with the door shut. My family and I are sitting contently in the living room socializing, reading, and just generally hanging.

My question: Does the music that people listen to affect their general mood and temperament?

My Belief: Music influences people subtly. Many have heard the belief that listening to classical music makes you smarter. Some scoff at the idea, but while writing this article, I am currently listening to the fiddle of Alastair Murray’s jump and play without the voice of man. Dr. William Pryse Phillips defines the term the Mozart Effect as, “"Slight and transient improvement in (ones) spatial reasoning skills.” To me, this sounds like bullshit, but as the door opens to the real world of other cultures, socities and ways of life, I have to ask myself, is the music that my generation idolizes making society dumber?

i liked OFWGKTA was underground, when people didnt care what tyler did or wasnt on his dick

okay now i feel like a fucking idiot, i didn't read the last paragraph for some reason. but yeah OP i completely get where you're coming from now

Not entirely sure, just wrote that last night thinking about some ish, I believe that our music preferences and preferences in general are becoming much simpler in general. For instance as I write this, I am happy. Back in the day our parents had to actually get out of the house to have fun. iPods, headphones, and computers are dulling our social skills, and communication abilities.

Just really using OF as a kind of case study. Ive seen videos of their shows and kids are all chanting "FUCK EARLS MOM". The kid was battling with addiction and other fucking crazy shit in his life. In my opinion Earls mom did the right thing getting her kid the help that he needed.

I believe that people are really easily influenced by pop culture and celebrities. Its scary to see how much damage kids are doing to their brains and bodies through with drugs and alcohol.

That is true, I haven't been on here in a while and I've been sober for 20+ days. Its really refreshing to look at the world with a different mindset...

In regards to earl's situation. Hardly any of the OF fanbase actually know what the deal was with him and his mom. The vast majority just think she heard his EP and sent him away because it was vulgur...

In regards to the OP, speaking personally. Music doesn't influence my moods or actions as much as my moods influence what music I listen to. If i'm feeling depressed or what have you, I'll throw on a record that agrees with my state of mind. If i'm happy i'll spin enema of the state or some gambino or something. That's just me.

Just want to comment on this, as i agree. Some would say that there is no difference between a person/group when they go from being "underground" to being more "mainstream", and they are right to an extent. I enjoyed OF back when they first started coming on the scene, their music was different and stood out. But now that they are the new big thing in rap, all I hear about is OF and tyler. Every day on FB, I see dumb ass 14 year old suburban white kids talking about how sick OF is, or quoting lines from a song, this I find VERY annoying, which leads to me not liking the artist/group, as I associate them with dip shit kids that bug me. Hearing about Tyler day in and day out has made him go completely stale for me, and I lack any interest in his music now, as it is not the same unique stuff that he was first putting out now that it is now plastered everywhere on the internet/media.

this. but music can defintely bring on certain emaotions for sure. and as far as intelligence relating to music tastes. i do firmly believe that certain types of music can prove a direct correlation between intelligence. i personally cant see an intelligent human being listen to FRIDAY by REBECCA BLACK... just my opinion.

thankfully very few people i know have heard of tyler or OF, and the ones who have aren't like this, but yeah i completely understand where you're coming from. i've had this experience before with bands/ artists, and when i hear (or see) stupid faggot kids being like 'ZOOOOMG THEY'RE MY FAVVV BANDDD!!!!!1!!!!' etc because they heard like one song on MTV when i've been listening to them for years it makes me want to fucking punch them in the nose. (hipsterkitty.jpg)

but that's off topic. i agree that some people need to branch out their music taste and stop being guided by what's 'cool' and 'mainstream'. music can control how people act/ think (but usually subtly and gradually) but i agree more with whoever said that their mood controls their music. if i'm driving on a sunny day, i'm most definitely going to put vampire weekend on. if i'm depressed out of my head, i will not listen to happy music.

fuck i don't even know where i was going with this...

OF is a new style of rap which I really like.

As Tyler puts it, you n***** rap about fucking bitches and gettin head instead I rap about fucking bitches and getting heads, While you n***** stacking bread, I can stack a couple dead

Bodies, making red look less of a color, more of a hobby.

It's a whole new style, plus Earl and Hodgy are filthy. I'm sure if some of you had the unreleased stuff that I have you'd think differently. Kitchen Cutlery, and Tyler's freestyles are just plain dirty.

find me a WORKING download of kitchen cutlery and I'll give you money.

It was on OFT for a max of a week, then removed at Tyler's request, I know for a fact you cannot download it anymore, and its removed from mediafire and such.

everything says that only a handful of tracks were ever released and that the album was never finished(and i'm going to believe guys with thousands of posts on an OF forum more then you), the tracks that were released i found in about 30 seconds on google

Joey, learn something. Once something is on the internet, doesn't matter for how long, it will ALWAYS be there. Site like MF and zippy and such are only a handful of those kind of sites, what ever you are looking for, it IS out there for anyone and everyone to download.

i listen to music that i like

i like tyler

so i listen to it

does it influence me?

no

and the world keeps spinning.

ahh fuck you got me, I appologize for doubting you, but you have to admit tyler's played but earl and mike g and domo and taco and hodgy aren't, at least not in maine

Odd Future was never good in my opinion.

Just unique.

In the beginning.

But now they are not.

Therefore they are neither good nor unique.

Negative Karma starts...

now

Don't really know if OP is suggesting that his brother is anti-social, or that kids are dumb-asses, because they listen to OF?

If so, OP has it backwards. People gravitate towards certain genres of music because of who they are, not the other way around... the music may shape them a bit, but i doubt it has a great effect on their overall behavior/personality.

Come on, you can't say they suck..... Plus Tyler produces almost of his music and directs all of his videos.

Music is getting simpler, the reasons people listen to it now are changing, as well as the setting. Also, don't forget that strictly classical music was not the only thing people used to listen to, there was music that was for partying and other things still. In a way, musical culture hasn't changed at all. The only difference is the people that NSers listen to won't show up in musical textbooks 400 years from now, but our great composers and contemporary musicians will. In the end it's about perspective - it's not that music is bad now it's just that most people aren't aware of the amazing variety of cool things going on in music right now.

I used OF as an example in this thread. My idea is that kids today are becoming less intelligent with the rise of the instant gratification style culture. With a few thumb presses on a cell phone or an ipod, a kid can create this multimedia filled paradise that you can hide within. Older generations-grandparents/parents had to get outside, make a phone call, etc to hang out with friends. The younger generation today use computers, cell-phones, and instant messaging instead of getting outside, talking to people, and just generally enjoying life. My opinion is that the more connected that one becomes through technology, the less connected that one becomes with reality...
