a camera better than the gl2?

hey i've been hired to make a soccer skills training video for an academy training program. we wont film until this summer and until then we'll be planning. i have a gl2 and i'm thinking that we need a better camera to do it, is there anything anybody can recommend?

There isn't really anything other than the GL2 for around the price that you are looking for that is better. You could go with a VX but that and the GL2 are so similar that it wouldn't even be worth changing. What type of upgrades are you looking for exactly because I would think the GL2 would be fine.

i just need crystal clarity, i suppose i just need to work on perfecting the lighting really since that has far more influence. it just needs to be sharp. this video actually has some very strong chances of making an enormous amount of money so it needs to be at that level of professional quality.

my roommate is the fucking man and has more connections than anyone i've met in years, actually all my roommates have ridiculous hook ups. i'm getting the job because my roommate played soccer with this guy who runs the academy program and now coaches one of the guys teams for him. hes hooking me up because hes one of the most genuinely generous people i've ever known and he wants to see me get a start in the film business, even if its just a soccer tactics video - gotta start somewhere right?

maybe you could find a used XL1s on e-bay or something, and sell your current camera to offset some funds too? i mean if this isn't goint to be a one time thing why start strugling with a camera you'll eventualy upgrade anyways?

GL2 is a fucking sick camera with incredible quality. It has so much potential there is no way you need anything more for this sort of video unless you were looking to shoot 24 fps.

phrosty, for the love of god man: i haven't been to film school yet, so it makes perfectly good sense that i don't know much about the mechanics of filmmaking. i know some things, but whatever opinions i have are in relation to things that you don't need to be in film school to understand: things like story construction, plot development, style, themes, actor strength, director quality, etc. these are things that anyone can have opinions on. i don't see any reason why i should feel stupid for asking questions about cameras that i'm not familiar with... and certainly not enough to ruin whatever absurd internet film integrity your referring to.

that XL1 sold at a wicked price.

I've got a film crew and we got and XL1s. it's retarded how nice that camera is. You can be an absolute hack and produce a good film with that camera somehow. I'm in love with it.

everyone I know who films skateboarding hates the GL series because the audio sucks ass compared to the vx series and the colors in outdoor- day time arent as good either. The gl2 is less grainy in low light conditions than the vx1000 but is about the same as the vx2k and has worse sound qualitiy. Also the fisheye/wideangle lenses avaliable arent nearly as good. But then again i'm speaking from my skateperception so dont listen to me. I know you talked about soccar but for filming skiing gl2 can beat the vx1 beacuse of snow is primary colors.

vx1 vs gl2

pros:

cheaper

better fisheye

better audio

better picture (its a fact the chips in the vx1 are larger than the chips in the gl2)

GET THE SONY VX-1000 OR VX-2100. i dont like the gl2's very much compared to those two cameras. you can find them for about 1300 at some online stores, which is a steal.

The main difference (that we care about) between the vx-1000 and the vx-2100 is this: the 2100 is much newer, and the clarity is a little better, not much tho. the 1000 is better for filming at night and has better contrast (which is great for filming arouond snow.) the 2100 is a bit newer and more expensiv, a little better clarity but not much, and has a few new features i believe. but the quality is much better than the gl2. the xl-1 is a very great camera, but its ginormous and i dont think its as good as the vx series when it comes to filming on the snow. Your other choice is to go to a used camera store and get an 8 mm video camera. These things are completely sick, although you can only film for like 3 minuts, and then you have to change the film, which is about $8 per roll. but the quality is so excellent. to edit you would have to splise, so unless you plan on spending hours and hours more on editing for perfect clarity in the 8mm, your best digital camcorder is gonna be the vx series

^its the opposite buddy,

vx1000 = 12 bit audio (sounds best on rails/pop) and best day time colors.

vx2000= better for night, 16bit audio but still good, slightly colder colors than the vx1

forget about the video quality and the tons of features of the XL1 just the look is cool. its one of the sexiest cameras ive ever seen. before I knew about cameras and all that I saw an XL1 and I knew right away that it was cool. then I started using it and not only was it a cool looking camera it actually had shit inside to back up the awesome looks outside.

although its a great camera I think you should stick with the camera you have and spend your budget on fiels microphone, tripod lighting ect.

If big money is going to be made with this go to a local film school and get a film student to help you, you dont have to pay him/her alot and they will definitly make the video look professional with their expertise. Camera techniques, lighting, editing, and good audio equipment and techniques are key to making things look professional.

 
the xl1 sucks, it's like shooting with a huge sack of potatoes. I have a xv21, and I like it more than any other camera Ive shot with, including the dvx, which by the way I'm suprised hasen't been mentioned.

yeah i was suprised the dvx 100a wasn't mentioned at all for that many posts. I think that's going to be my next camera. since i've heard nothing else except it's fucking insane

 
Canon XL1S is a great camera, I love it. But I'm probably getting the VX2100 for my own use by these comments.

yeah you could just attach a good mic onto your gl2 for sound. and i just got the gl2 and the quality is sick. try learning manual controls if you havn't. that helps a lot

the 1000 is terrible for filming at night compared to the 2100

the daytime shot of the 1000 however is unbeatable...well it is, but not by a gl2 or a 2100 (unless your really really good with cameras and custom presets, then you can tweak the show in the 2100 to make it better, but it takes a lot of precision)

gl2 is perfect for what you are doing. its a professional level camera. just get the right accessories and you will be fine. i.e. lighting and you'll need pro mics and such... but yeah. w00t.

how about instead of dropping $5000 on a consumer camera you rent a real movie camera? it's the way to go man, and once you have more money you can buy the best camera.

buying a film cam just cause you have the money for it isn't a bright idea, because you have to pay a shitload of money just to get it developed, then transferred to miniDV tape.

And the mic quality on the Panasonic DVX-100A has the best sound from what I've heard....THis whole clip was filmed with the DVX100A, in case you're interested:

yo, you know a lot about filming. my bro and i want to split on a camera for filming skating and skiing. we just want an all around good camera compatible with a fish eye and wide lense. keep in mind that we are not made of money. what would you recommend?

Phrosty, when this kid (the one who started the thread) is talking about a professional situation and getting into the film industry, something like the XL-1(s) is not absolutely necessary, but will be his best bet by far. Alright, maybe you don't like the bulky shoulder mount design, but that's what professional cameras are like. they're far superior to any hand held prosumer camera like the GL1/GL2/VX2000, etc. That's why the XL-1 was created, because professional videographers wanted a more complete camera, with all the controls of a $10,000+ video camera for less money. if this kid (or anyone else) wants to get into professional videography, the XL1(s)/XL2 is the way to go, it just depends on the money situation. but no matter what, it'll be a good investment. s ince he is in fact talking about a professional situation, he will need most of the features of the XL1, especially the 2 XLR audio inputs. this isn't skiing/skateboarding videography that he's talking about where he can just use the left/right audio channels from the onboard mic.

and p.s. - you are the one who needs to stop acting like you are the authority on this subject. i don't care if you go to school for it or do it for a living or what, but there is always someone who knows more.

 
uh I don't think he knows too much about cameras because I know for a fact that the audio on a GL2 is better than the audio on a VX1k, but the audio on a VX1k is much better than that of the GL1.

the biggest difference between the GL1 and the GL2 is the audio. the GL2's audio is much better and is very muvh improved. I just thought people should know that since some are assuming the GL2 audio sucks because it did on the GL1.

try and get the acadamy to pay for a new camara you can use they might even have some around. if you can barow one it would save you a lot of money.
