A callout...

So I've noticed hate thread after hate thread, it doesn't seem to stop.
-Dumont is gay because he has a tattoo on his arm
-Boone skis suck because the owner is jacked
-the list goes on, i just chose these two as recent examples

I noticed a difference between these two threads though. In one thread, the person being hated on, actually comes out and defends their case. Boone Skis came to address all the hate against their company.
In the Dumont thread, Simon Dumont didn't come out and say something like: "Hey, that tattoo is the name of someone who is very close to me".

I guess what's important to think about is that yes, hate is bad, but we can't stop people from hating on NS. What we can do is take the example of people like Tanner and Jon, who actively post on NS, especially when an issue of hate against them comes up. We need the industry and the pros more involved in the forums.
Next time you see a hate thread, send it to the person who it targets, that way they can actually have a say and can explain their side of the story.

I have said it before and I will say it again: the best way to combat hate on newschoolers is to post on newschoolers and behave like a normal human being (or in Tanner's case, someone who loves skiing way more than any human being normal or otherwise). Whining about how people don't like you or what you're pushing, or hating in return will compound the problem. Peoples' egos often get in the way of their recognition of the fact that people are going to have opinions and they're often going to be negative ones, and that's something you need to be comfortable with. Not just pretend to be comfortable with. Otherwise it's just going to drive you insane. It's really hard to shit talk someone to their face (or in their internet presence) while they're being calm and reasonable.

The once-rampant name calling for like 30 consecutive posts is at an all-time low though. So even though there is more 'hate,' at least people are making a much more conscious effort to sound a little more intelligent. The Boone thread actually sounded like a heated conversation and fewer people calling eachother names - although I didn't get to see the deleted posts.

whatever. fuck Boone and fuck Dumont (Boone for being gay, Dumont for being sexier than me... it's a jealousy thing).
people will handle it however they choose to handle it. in some people's opinions, no press is bad press. perhaps Dumont is of that opinion and would rather have half of NS paying attention to every little thing he does- being one of the most popular names in skiing must be worth quite a bit. if the Boone guys want to get on here and defend their totally unoriginal garbage, that's their deal.
i agree it would be cool to see more input from pros, but i don't think they should feel obligated to get on NS to defend themselves against a bunch of kids over something that probably isn't a big deal to them.

This has only happened EVERY SINGLE summer and fall of Newschoolers.com existence ever.

so true, i don't wanna sound like the saviour saying i came up with a solution to the problem, but i think that pros like simon should be posting on NS, not acting like mysterious celebrities

but in a sense controversy is important for the sites survival, without it, there isn't much to talk about

Sorry i lost my pie chart.

but has anyone noticed at least a 98% drop in T-Hall hate threads.

He has addressed everyone on this site multiple times, look how much everyone shuts up when they have to face one of tha best skiiers in tha world in a thread.

End Hate '08, Bishop for President.

Every Pro has an Alias and they come on here and talk shit about themselves just to watch.

only since tha conception of orange names have they come out in tha open.

Could you explain in a very detailed way why you hate him so much?

I actually really want to hear this, because I think I should hate him too but need more justification for it.

I don't think it would change anything. Every fall people hate. Even more so than usual (which is incredibly hard to believe).

if i was simon, i'd let that thread go on until it dies, then suddenly post in it and tell everyone i got wasted one night and some other drunk dude tattooed "arbcia" on my arm, and i haven't had time to get it removed yet because i've been so busy slaying everything in sight.

the boone thread changed, it's actually become more-or-less civilised now.

yea i know, i was one of the kids who got deleted. to clarify for anyone who missed it, Boone said that other ski companies come on NS with aliases and put down his company. He claimed VTsuger was working for another company and that he was trying to put down Boone to somehow force Boone of the market. Most of us didn't react to well to that kind of statement, including myself, and eventually that post and all of the posts in response to it were deleted.

yeah, not really a good call on his part...

I've been a pretty active advocate for boone, but stuff like this does need to stop, in terms of both shameless self-promotion on his part and the ignorance that some NSers show toward the company. I think it will once people ride them more this season...at least, I hope so. It's not really needed.

As for dumont, I've only heard bad things about him from kids that I know that have competed against him, and after hearing his speech in Yeah Dude, I'm not really a fan. He is a ridiculously good skier though, nobody can really deny it even if they don't like the personality.

I dont really see Ns without the hate threads weither you like it or not. Althoguht i have seen most pro posting in threads recently.

Things just got out of hand. It happens when you're on the internet... you see it everywhere, someone pissis you off, and you can't help but post something nasty because you're so mad.

I think that Erik was gettting pounded on pretty hard, snapped, said some shit, people got mad - went bananas - and hate was just flying around.

I deleted the thread (and KNOW that I have had my own posts deleted by other moderators) because it was just shit flying around. Fuck it... I think its great when someone just cleans up a conversation and says "FUck this, lets get back to the proper issue." Its the only way to keep a decent forum.

Newschoolers.com gets almost 1,500 new threads per WEEK. We're talking about enough shit on here, and deleting a few posts is probably the best for all of us.

fair enough. personally though, i saw what he posted and i'm not going to forget it just because it was deleted. he hasn't retracted it himself for those of us who did see it, and so i'm still going to hold it against him, without holding anything against his company.

THe single best part about Newschoolers.com is that the CUSTOMER has feedback. Never before in media has the end customer - the guy who pays full RETAIL - had a chance to tell the world just what was pissing them off about the industry. I mean think about it... you guys are the people buying the products, and before all the magazines, movies and pros told you what was cool. Now, we've got to develop a relationship with the end customer (and NS is no different) where we listen to their feedback. Sometimes we get pissed about it, 'cause shit you have no idea how much it sucks to be hated on in the forums when you've basically put your whole live behind something... as industry people are only human as well.

With power comes responsibility, and on NS it is great when we all develop open lines of communication on topics, and yes sometimes disagreee, but in general try to remember that this is a sport we all love.

As for Dumont... fuck it guys he's an alright dude. Seriously, don't EVER judge someone until you've met them.

Photo or it didn't happen?

Just partyin' at IF3 2007. Trust me, Dumont 'aint a bad guy, and neither are any of the other pros out there. Everyone is just like you, just some of them are exceptional at skiing. People have good days, bad days, people who love them, people who hate them... and the internet mashes all those feelings together.

Best advice is don't judge someone until you meet them in person. Its old-school these days, but face-to-face is the only way to truly judge a person and be able to say you know what they're all about.

ummmm you met him once and you didnt say anything? i was standing in between you and dumont and the only words uttered were

"hey there buddy" me

"hey, hows the speed for this jump?" dumont

"just go from here" me

"thanks" dumont

i've met dumont in person, he was a douche bag. you can have your opinion, i have mine, but who makes fun of a kid for skiing with no poles for 4 hours straight? seriously, i broke my pole so decided to ski with none, and he made a point to yell at me from the lift or jump whenever he saw me, but never directly to my face. that's not how you treat people, and falls in the category of douche-bagery. his little speech in yeah dude doesn't help either.

what a dick move. he must feed off of hate to go around saying things like that. i didn't have an opinion on Dumont until i read that, because i'd never met him, but now, well, i don't have a lot of respect left for him. he should just shut the fuck up and ski. it sickens me to hear about pros acting this way, as if being sponsored automatically gives them the right to be an asshole to everyone else.

it's funny, cause i DO ski with poles, unless one breaks or i hurt my thumb or something.

also, in push/pull there are a few shots of dumont sans poles.

photo of Dumont and Bishop taken by Mike Rogge.

I've hung out with Simon both professional and casually. Met him at Killington when we were both 15 and skiing. Ran into him at premieres. Hell, I spent 5 days with the guy, his friends, and family in Maine for the World Record shoot. I'm not saying this makes me an expert on the guy but in all of my numerous encounters I've learned that, like Doug stated earlier, he's a normal guy. And that's coming from a guy who's had Dumont DENY him an interview after I'd written nothing but good things about him in the past.
Did I take it to heart, start talking shit, or flame on him on NS?
No.
We all have good days and bad days and I know for SURE there are kids out there that hate on me for being a 'dick' to them. I'm sorry but I don't spend every waking hour of my life making sure everything I do in the real world doesn't reflect negatively about my reputation on the Internet.
People that have met me in real life and I'm not talking, "Hey I saw him on the chairlift with his friends," I'm saying had a conservation with me, hopefully know I'm not a douche.
Dumont is no different.

That Fucking Mike Rogge guy was such a DICK to me. I met him at IF3 and had a conversation with him, and wow, guy's a douche. Simon is an okay dude, but Rogge, that's another story.

Actually I have basically no first-hand experience with Simon, but from people who know him well I gather that he has both good and bad attributes, much like the rest of us. Which has to be a big surprise... a pro skier? Human? Nuh uh, I don't believe. The hate is way overblown. But I can't help but notice that NS is sort of a living entity in this sense; like just about anyone with an ego, this site doesn't show respect to those that don't respect it, and vice versa. So if you're on here showing love, you seem to get it in return.

i only hate on simon when someone tries to tell me i have no reason too, and i have plenty reason to, along with a lot of people on here. If you want the hate to stop, stop making threads like this that just continue to bring the problem up, im perfectly happy hating him in my own little world, but like i said, it gets me angry when people tell me i shouldn't hate on simon purely based on principle.
