A Basin purchased by Alterra

im sure they will let Alan run the show through the season, and next year let the place get run to shit.

there is no room for more parking or hotels, the mom and pop shop vibe will be turned into pay parking only , the staff that makes abasin safe will leave, which is very scary... and yes, the steep gullies will stop running. the early and late season skiing will be shut down...stupid Ikon/VR passes, summit county has become a zoo, one big traffic jam of jerkoffs that are pissed off season pass holders...

I hate you all.

if i were to do it, i would keep it 5 or 7 days on the ikon but then make it unlimited before november and after may 1st. also keep the a basin only pass with a full ikon option similar to crystal i think (also alterra)

Yeah we'll see. I think with that location even a week will be crazy busy. But wouldn't be surprised if they send it full too. Crystal def was nicer when they backed off. Unlimited ikon was nuts. So fucking busy. They bulldozed their employee housing for another parking lot kind of busy.

Jk, i didn't read far enough down

Which alterra mountain has a woodward? I've only seen them at POWDR corp resorts

Can you stand it even now? Unless they radically change the parking situation, I'll be moving to an Alta pass next year. Snowbird has become the gutter of the cottonwoods for all the people that can't get a parking reservation anywhere.

Stay strong powdr Corp, I wouldn't be able to stand it if we were unlimited at bird on ikon.

Abasin seemed quite cool from what I saw. This saddens me.

Currently, Ikon pass only gets 5 (or maybe 7?) days at Abasin. Alterra could give unlimited days to Ikon pass holders (just like WP, Steamboat, Solitude etc.). A lot of people go to WP/Copper to save their A-Basin days for the spring or when it snows; if they had unlimited, they might go all the time.

The way Alterra’s relationship is structured with their associated resorts (Alta/SB, Aspen, etc.), they are incentivized to get as many “skier-days” as possible at the resorts they own.

Base IKON is only 5 days at Steamboat

if Jan through March is this bad, maybe I'll get another pass in addition to bird, but I couldn't not have a snowbird pass, love that mountain way too much. Even Sunday when it was packed, I still had fun just by riding in the right places, and then the afternoon it dies down.

Don't know if they'll implement parking reservations ever, but I kind of hope they do, so long as season passholders get some kind of priority for booking them.

It seems their brand is selling the idea of a locals mountain to tourists. Taking away a lot of the flash of i70 resorts while still being very much an i70 resort.

brighton following this same game plan

This is my 20th season skiing Abasin (yes I'm old) so here goes:

Some of my favorite days skiing have been at Abay. Back in the day the scene was quite rowdy. You could camp in the parking lot and it seemed at all hours people were getting wild. We use to hand the lifty a 30 rack of PBR and he would beer us as we lapped the chair. Obviously they had to clean that up after while but the vibe has always remained. As another poster said that is what they are selling to the public: A local's party scene with some great terrain.

That said Abasin is done. In the past five years they have remodeled the lodge bar (6th Alley), upgraded lifts (not complaining), added what I can only describe as a German beer hut high-end seven eleven between midmountain and the top, and turned the old ski patrol shack into a fancy Italian restaurant. All most likely to attract a buyer.

Berthoud pass has had multiple closures this season. Now every Winter Park jabroni is going to flood the basin instead of dealing with that. Abay was amazing because they actually managed the crowds. For example last season they took the number of season pass and lift ticket sales DOWN 10%. This was to make sure people are having a great experience as opposed to waiting in lift lines. That is out the window now.

RIP Abasin. You will be missed.

TL;DR: This is horrible and she's dead Jim

Not gonna cry over spilt milk aka A Basin when I’ve got Loveland

A basin is a cool mountain, but it’s got that same vibe that drew me away from WP. I hated that ultra “secret” experience they tried to show, and being so anti breck was odd as well.

I get it’s all a marketing thing and I’m most likely not the target audience, but hate to see it. I just like a mountain that does its own thing and does it well.

Kind of doubt it, Solitude in Utah quietly has some of the most consequential terrain in the US in fantasy ridge and other places, and someone lost an edge on a traverse and died a year or two back. That's still open so I doubt they mess with Abay terrain

This might be a retarded prediction but I foresee Alterra forcing the resort/ski patrol to shut down the East Wall and Steep Gullies at some point in the coming years.

Either preemptively or following a bunch of retarded Jerry’s killing themselves trying to go down either.

I’m not saying this terrain is some all time challenging terrain, but the average skier at the basin is 10x better than what you see at Breck, Keystone, and Copper.

Altera is not known for being a friend of terrain parks, shovel built jumps, or employee satisfaction.

Alterra owns Mammoth and they have arguably the best terrain parks in North America. Certainly top 5 easily and they invest a lot of resources into them.

yeah they also fund projects like ruby hill rail yard.

they seemingly let the local management dictate what the park is going to look like. this is different from both Vail who seemingly killed parks across the board for banked slalom courses and groomers and POWDR who bought woodward and pushes a woodward park at every location.

and on the east coast, sugarbush

They've also been expanding the park at Solitude every year even though space is pretty limited. Idk what solitude was like before Alterra, but they clearly care about keeping the park around.

Am I allowed to say I like what Solitude has been doing the last few years? Expanding the park, nordic nights, and end of year pond skim show me that someone there is trying to improve the resort.

I'm confused, is there parking reservations/ kon reservations for this season at Abasin?

I'm hyped I'm going out to Copper and Abasin for the first time next week

Not for this season although they do have $20 dollar parking for the lower lot on weekends if there are less than 3 people in the vehicle. All other lots are free.

Have a great trip! East wall is open at Abay now. Great skiing if the snow isn't too hard.
