as far as the guy said about The open needing to produce some un known... Thats just what happens, its the only contest were anyone can enter and compete with the best. I don't really think thats the case so much this year though.

This year Tanner Won Halfpipe, He got second in slopestyle to Gagnier, who is far from being a complete nobody... TJ won the big air, hes well establish at this point too...

Vinnie was not a rando when he won slopestyle... he'd just never won a contest at that point. Philou and Woodie were un known... but fucking woods did 12's with ill style all night, and philou did a switch backflip, somthing rather un heard of back in the day.

Spong pulled into 6th spot in Slopestyle, I don't think its a coincidence he ended up where he was in big air.

Talk about off the radar... Sean Fields, second in superpipe. Good work buddy.

i want to see a switch 12 then

wait, i cant see him. where is he? oh, hes black!!!!!!- switch-9

First of all, Its retarded to argue with the judging, becuase its done and no discussion can change that. I think the statement that Lanks made saying:

'i think spong didnt deserve what he got'

is just outrageous. Its the judges decision to choose who gets placed where in the standings, they are the only people with the power to decided who is techincally deserving of the spot. Im sure people could argue for hours about who should have beat who and so on, but none of that matters. When you talk about him going pro, to my knowledge, hes not even close to pro, he came into the open with a semi goggle sponsor, riding some armadas and wearing snowboard apparel. I think its amazing how he came into the open, and got to where he did. When Lanks said:

'its the us open trying too hard to produce another 'unknown''

im fairly confident, 'the us open' doesnt get togeather with other comps and decide that there randomly going to make some young kid a star. From what Dave said, it seemed that he deserved his spot in the big air. And was it just 'the us open' that also that gave him a top 10 spot in slopestyle. From what i know, this kid came into the open, threw down, judges loved it, so he got scored how he did. If he didnt deserve what he got, im sure he wouldnt be in that position right now.

But in conclusion, what made me write this was the fact that a 14 year old kid, with no sponors, no media attention, practially unknown, came out and placed top 10 in slope, and 2nd in big air, in one of the biggest skiing events of the year, and you say hes not deserving.....

to clarify; this kid sounds sick. he's 14, and can throw sweet switch 10's. but...so can everyone else.

personally i dont really like switch tens

of course you have to be very skilled to do one but it seems kind of dumb

mik's switch d10 blunt last year was nuts

that blew pretty much everything out of the water

big air shouldnt be a contest of how fast you can spin backwards

Hey honey, take a walk on the wild side

spong is nutz out there i skied with that kid back in the day at stevens when i heard what he was pulling this weekend i was like wtf

dood I think i saw this kid last year up at my local mountain in Missoula, Montana, called Snowbowl. There was a big air contest and he was throwing the dopest cork 7's, he ended up winning the comp. They were so smooth and he would just stomp them. Im pretty sure that was him and I can't believe how far he has made it !! PROPS

Lanks^, bullshit. If anything, existing pros get waaaay better scores than ams at the Open. I was there and I saw it. Tanner and Henrik got a 78 and 80 respectively for average switch 10s with no grab. Those scores put them in the top 8 because they were sitting with scores that would not have gotten them in the top 8 after the first jump. John Spriggs got a 61 for a switch 12 WITH a grab contrary to the judges opinion. Clearly the judges wanted the 'household names' in the finals. Derek Spong was killing it with very stylish switch 10s and he deserved it. For someone who was not there, you should shut your mouth and speak when you have a point of reference. Your post is moronic.

______________

I own you

first off, i mentioned many times that i wasnt there and that 'i didnt see the comp, and what i have said is all based on bishop's commentating.'

secondly, im not for or against the judging, so saying 'so and so got this, while so and so only got that' is not proving my argument wrong. radoripper, i read in an article by mike douglas that in order to be a pro, you have to be better that the pros. thats what i based my argument onoff. tj schiller last year was better than the pros. he did a trick that nobody else was doing, and killed it. props to tj, and look where he is now. this year, a young nobody by the name of spong comes out and throws switch 10's. thats actually really cool, and im stoked to see an am kill it like that. but what i was getting at was that everybody else and their little brother were throwing switch 10s as well. hell, i would rather the 'nobody' to have been spriggs, because he threw down the switch 12, not spong! anyways this is getting long, but what im saying is that im not too sure that spong beating out the likes of gagnier and such with the same trick was a coincidence.

Spong doesn't count. He's Chinese, they are naturally good at that kind of shit. Wonder why you don't see more of them? They're all either rollerblading or doing gymnastics.

Spong went for a switch 12 in his second run of slopestyle, but hipchecked the landing a bit. Pretty damn good for his first try at the trick. He was quite simply killing it at that event and totally deserved what he got because his switch tens were definitely better than most of the pros.

yeah, spong is for sure good...it was the wierdest thing tho, i saw him a couple wks before the US open, and he was just regularly sliding rails, no spins, not a switch off, i mean, just regular skiing, then BAM i hear he's in the US Open.. Crazy

yay.snow.yay

i meet him at pc yesterday he is a super nice kid and can rip everything he was pullin 360 switch ups over the huge up flat down super smooth and dialed

thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard.

it seems like this stage of life for a lot of people around our age is like when you are playing a video game and you beat the Final Boss, only to find out that was just a decoy Final Boss and the real Final Boss is about 50x harder. and on top of that, you used all your special tricks to beat the Decoy, and you are also low on life. and you have a crappy third party controller.

Do I smell, JEALOUSY? haha just kidding. I think judging should be on big air, tricks, style, and attitude. But then some people like the hardkore attitude which will make it all warped like a vhs thats been in the sun with a wetsuit also in the car.

'big air shouldnt be a contest of how fast you can spin backwards'

couldnt have put it better myself.

What's wrong with the US open attempting to produce a new celebrity every year? Eventually, T Hall's going to run out of tricks to pull out of his bag, especially considering his level of intelligence.

To whoever said kids shouldn't get better marks for throwing the same tricks as the pros, bullcrap. They're smaller, they have less developed musculature, they've had less time to learn and progress their tricks, and they don't get the benefit of pro stock equipment, good techs, or lines on the newest shit.

Also, would everybody quit bitching about the judging? Every other topic as of late is somebody else bitching about some aspect of the judging. If you know so much about judging an event fairly and properly, why are you in here talking about it instead of out there doing it?

do you know how many pro's there'd be if everybody at the same level magically became a pro? seriously, you have to raise the bar to go pro, thats the way it is; and should be.
