Its not epoxy, its polyester resin.

So it doesn't actually have a specified 'set time', it all depends on how much catalyst you use. Using the 'normal' amount, its supposed to gel at 10-15 minutes, but takes quite a bit longer to completely set. For all the small stuff I've been doing with it (small carbon fiber squares and stuff) I usually set it up at night, and by the next morning its fine.

But with the ski, I wanted more time to work with the resin, so I used slightly less catalyst. I think we rushed ourselves too much, we probably had more time than we thought, it was a little chaotic. Its probably already set, but just to be safe (especially cause the core is so thick its gonna want to rip the ski apart) I will let it set up for another day. I am going to move it back inside though (hopefully) if the fumes have gone away. My mom wasn't too happy about the fumes, hahahaha

she was more than not happy, she was pissed!!! thats the maddest i've ever seen her.

well, it appears the resin set up just fine. Its back inside now, in a nice warm room. I peeled a little of the mylar back from the edge (not anywhere near the ski kevin, don't worry) and it set up just fine, so thats awesome!

BUT, towards the end kevin, the open end, the sidewals aren't even CLOSE! I can see one part that is ON TOP OF THAT GOD DAMN NAIL!!!!!!!

so there's one fuckup ski done, it'll go on my wall. It'll still look cool.

Looks like my dad really wants to get a jointer now, which will allow me to make a PERFECT base, MUCH MUCH thinner. So back to the drawing boards, gotta redesign this ski YET AGAIN. But this time should be better.

More pictures to follow tomorrow once the ski is out of the press, kevin I'll call you when I get home so we can take it out.

wide brakes arrived today. Gonna mount up this first ski even though its most likely not skiable. gotta learn how to mount ski bindings too!!!

Thats one nice thing about working in the rental shop, I don't have to worry about mounting skis, someone around knows how to do it.

nice.

i'm just going to make a template off my old skis, the ones the bindings came off of, and use that to drill the holes in the new skis.

takin the ski out of the press tonight after i get off work to see the final damage!!! :) i'll have sean post some pics hopefully

I'll be using my drill press for the bindings, so no worries there!

(except I'll probably mount them on the bottoms of the ski, hahahahaha) OOPS

I have to be all covered when working with the composites. the fibers get in your skin, and cause really bad slivers that hurt like a bitch and you can't even see em. and you can get rashes and stuff. it can also fuck up your lungs, so I wear a respirator.

the tips/sidewall and the sidewall in other parts of the ski are messed up.

the nose of the ski is all fucked.

the sidewalls didn't stay on the core, the topsheet didn't sit on the core, all kinds of crap.

gotta re-design the press-jig (already have)

I have a website set up now, it will be online tonight, I will post a link in here as soon as its up!

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

oh, and the reason the nose looks so steep is cause theres about a centimeter that still needs to be trimmed off, but the sidewall sticks out that centimeter, so I'm just leaving it.

The 'actual' skis will look better. Even still, the tips aren't too steep at all, they go to a 45 degree angle, no more.

oh yeah, and they're wider than my face, hahahaha.

(and i ain't helping you make skis ever, dick)

yeah I thought the tips looked fucked up but I didn't want to say anything... I thought maybe you wanted them like that or something.

well, they're fucked, yes. but they're not THAT fucked. I can't even tell in the pictures.

like, look at the one with the ski on my wall rack thing, it looks perfect!!! the nose looks a LITTLE taller than the tails, but it still looks great.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

They look fine from the side, but when you're comparing them to the other ski's... how can you tell me you can't see how messed up that tip looks?

the tip just looks fucked cause he cut them poorly cause it was hard to cut the tips on the ban saw

mmm maybe thats why, they kinda look lopsided too though, get like a skill saw or a jigsaw... is there even such thing as a skill saw?? anyway, the little one that can cut rounded stuff.... hell even a router would do.

a skill saw is the big hand saw thing for cutting boards and stuff.

i have a bandsaw and a scroll saw. bandsaw works fine, but I can't cut it down anymore cause of the way the sidewalls are sticking out. The next one will be better.

--------------------------------

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

hahahaha a skill saw. thats a brand but most people call circular hand held saws skill saws, they are used for cutting straight lines and aren't good for much else.

the ban saw would work fine, but he was trying not to cut the side wall that was sticking out (even though it didn't matter if he cut the side wall there cause its not glued in, so no harm no foul) plus there was just too much junk in the shope like the press to move around (ie not enough space) plus the ceiling gets in the way, next ski will be cut outside and will look fine

yes, you're thinking of a jig saw

a jigsaw is handheld.

a scroll saw will cut the most intricate cuts, but wouldn't work for a ski.

it is a stationary unit with a TINY little blade that oscillates up and down.

great for cutting out airfoil sections for tiny airplanes!

yes I did, I need to update the site, just don't have time.

I took the one ski I made up. It's fucking KILLER.

It is way too stiff, so it was awkward skiing with it and one noodle-soft 1260. I'd go to turn, and the stumpystick would turn like MAD, but the 1260 wouldn't much.

The excessive stiffness was simply due to the fact that the core was WAY too thick, this has been changed in the design for the next ski.

I got between two moguls, and started bouncing softly, to test the flex (and see if they'd break). Well, I ended up jumping as HARD as I could, and no breaking, they just bounce a LOT.

However, I knew the ski wouldn't last long, because the tip was so fucked, the sidewalls weren't closed, and the core was all exposed.

So, on the second run, I looked down and noticed that the sidewall was sticking out slightly on one side of the nose. Then, when I turned to the left (got on the left edge) the snow would grab the sidewall and pull it back. I figure it wouldn't be good to have it come out on the slope, so I ripped the entire length of the sidewall out, and carried it down to the car.

I bombed it all the way down, and they are SUPER solid at high speed, not squirrly or uncontrolled or anything. Also, they ski switch FANTASTICALLY. turn nice and easy, and again feel nice and solid and controlled.

I found ONE little tiny patch of untracked powder on the side of the trail, went in, and the one stumpystick was almost better than my two 1260s together, hahahahah!

So I've changed the design quite a bit, fixed up (supposedly) everything that went wrong with the first one. I won't find out until I make the next one, but I better be right, cause its my last ski to fuck up (on the free materials) after that I have to build an identical perfect pair.

I have also drastically changed the shape of the ski, although the dimensions are the same. The next ski will be the same as the first design, because I alread cut out the p-tex and edges a few weeks ago. But the final pair will have the new design (different sidecut, and different tips is all, looks MUCH better).
