dude, if you just got dumped wouldnt that give you more time?

hahaha just kidding... ya i knew they were fatter just didnt know how much fatter, there not a whole lot more then BC's is what im tryin to show.

how many pairs you think you will make? If you made some that were about 180 I would think of buying some

600 dolers a pair! didnt u say u made them for around 200?? i kno the 600 dollers includes labor and evrething, but if ur looking to get something started, id say a starting price shud be a little less than that...but maybe im wrong

hoose is a p i m p

I do not plan on making more of these and selling them, I'm not going into ski manufacturing, I'm going into Aeronautical Engineering. That's not to say I don't want to go into this, who knows, I'm willing to go wherever life takes me.

However, seeing how much research, development, design, and labor I've put in to these, I'm not so keen on letting any go. But, if the price was right ($600 or more) I would be more than willing to sell a pair.

This was all just a joke cause I couldn't afford new skis, a joke I took all too seriously. So sorry, but unfortunately I will not be making any in 180. I am only making 4 skis, with the hope of getting a good pair out of the 4. If all goes perfect, then I'll have two backups in case the worst happens. Unless someone really wants to drop a load on them.

As far as the stiffness goes... well, lets see. Although I do have the knowledge and education to analyze this all properly, do I really want to? nope. The stiffness gradient I guess you could call it will be basically symetrical down the length of the ski. Its determined mostly by the thickness of the wood, since the fiberglass and carbon fiber are uniform the whole way down. The skis have a linear taper to them, from the waist to the tips, and so the stiffness should vary more or less linearly. The waist is not the center of the ski, it is slightly back (did not want to center mount these)

oh, and as to how I'm making them, I won't say too much now. Once they are all finished, I'll put up a detailed thread showing the whole process from design to completion!

You'll like it!

yeah that would be really interestig to take a look at. especially since i might be able to do something very similar for an engineering project at my school, then i can make my 180's.

where do you go to school? Are you in engineering? What kind?

good luck finding edges!

haha no im not questioning your knowledge, just wondering how your setting up the ski, its pretty easy to just stick more material in the tail of the ski to make it stiffer, so there really wasn't anyway to know judging from your eariler posts and pics... Unfortunatly, I think you'll find carbon fiber is nothing more then 'bling bling' on skis, but you'll get to know composites, and that will pay off big in aeronautics. Have fun

i go to the university of portland and am studying engineering management. i may switch to some other type of engineering though, dont really know yet

the carbon fiber is most definately bling bling on these skis, it really provides basically NO more stiffness, hahahahaha.

but god damn this stuff is sexy!

And im getting into engineering too, but im heading up to Western, theres not much of a program up there, so I'll probably just get some general degree, then head over to Montana State for my masters. Yay Big Sky!

doesn't western have a really good mechanical engineering department? I thought I heard that somewhere. They have like an automotive thing, or something, and use composites a lot I know.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

Yeah there getting better, there getting a ton of grants... but its nothing compared to other schools, I think they have about 7 or 8 engineering programs there... damn hippies.

i heard a little abbout their automotive program too. that sounds pretty cool. i almost ended up going there

Yeah its the Vehicle Research Institute(VRI) But, like I said, damn hippies... they make solar panelled cars and then go drive them around the city in australia... which wouldn't be such a bad gig... maybe test drive a REAL sti.

university of portland is gunna hae such a good cc team....kinda off subject but true

yes, blank white ski with no edges.

I forgot to tell you guys, these skis are cross country skis.

just kidding.

hahahahaha, cross country skiers would love to NOT be cross country skiers!!!

(for the record, I have never gone cross country, and would probably only last about 5 minutes before I'd be too exhausted, so I do give credit to them. us downhillers have it easy, point down hill and watch the scenery)

not really, they just have dave kinsella(got 2nd in state, went to inglemoor), Michael quackenbush(9th) and colin longmuir(hella fast from woodinville). in two years they will be money

what the fuck are you talking about? I'm so confused.

Ordered new brakes for my bindings just now, those should arrive in a few days. I was lucky enough that Tyrolia makes bindings for skis up to 115mm wide! Few! Cause I was already trying to bend out my brakes that I have now (only fit around a ski up to like 30mm wide!!! hahaha) and that wasn't working!

i think hes talking about cross country runners? i don't know?

cause thats completely relevant in this thread....

haha, i think so.

Sidewalls are all prepared. They are white ABS that wrap around the entire ski (two halves, left and right, with a joint at either end of the ski).

nothing's glued there, I just used the small nails so I could get the sidewalls trimmed and curved right. I put the base and edges on the big board, put a bunch of nails on it, and bend the sidewalls in there.

Tomorrow I finish the press, and saturday I make the first ski (hopefully)

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

kind of a funny (and lucky) note here:

the sidewalls I got from the same generous people I got the edge material and p-tex from.

They were just long pieces used for some other ski. Originally I was going to have it go to just before where the tips bend up, and have something else go the rest of the way, but couldn't figure out what that something else was. So I thought I'd test fit to see if the sidewalls could reach from tip-to-tip (as I have them there). They did, with only 2mm extra!!!! If that didn't fit, I basically would've been screwed. I have NO idea what I would've done. That is BIG TIME luck there. This will be the best construction, and the best looks! Easiest too.

The skis will be thick at the tips though, I was going to shave the sidewalls down about 2mm, but decided there was no good way to do that (sander would just melt the ABS). So the tips will be around 1/4inch or so. Meh! These things are gonna be STIFF

--------------------------------

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

god damn, I'm getting so excited for these skis. Just looking at the pictures is making me all giddy!!!

They're gonna be SO FUCKING COOL!!!!!!!!

Ok, design is now final-final-finalized.

A few days ago I noticed a major discrepancy that really would've fucked up the first pair of skis and the press. Luckily I noticed it, changed the design, and now everything looks good.

Here is a final render of the actual design, white sidewalls and all (just pretend the top is carbon fiber, too much work to put it on there)

word of advice.....

DON'T EVER MAKE YOUR OWN SKIS

I wouldn't say that if my bandsaw's blade hadn't broken at 1am today, as we were TOTALLY on a roll! Then BAM, ruins our flow.

Oh well, tomorrow morning we'll finish the first ski (or fail)

stupid skis, i wanna go skiing tomorrow, not sand and cut skis out!!!

leaning towards fail, but we'll see in a few days

the sad thing is NOTHING. we were cutting all night with it, then we were going to cut the shape of the core out, and as we were walking over to the bandsaw (already running) it just snapped.

got a wider blade today and it worked better anyways.

Here's the ski in the press with Kevin tightening it:
