You guys realize it has to be semi cold to make snow right? Temps are 60 in the day and 40 at night. Coldest nkght in the 10 day is 31 and raining.

Things can chance but that looks pretty bleak for snowmaking.

next week is low to mid 40s at the base so thats definitely cold enough for 12+ hours of the day for a few days which is all they need.

You need like midish to high 20s up on the mountain..I don’t see anything in the foreseeable future

Not mine, but interesting:

Killington needs to move somewhere around fifteen million gallons of water onto Superstar for the World Cup (based on 200k - 250k gal per acre foot, 5000' trail length, 150' width, 2.5' depth).

In super marginal conditions they can still get at least 3000 gallons per minute onto that trail (60,000 CFM at a 25:1 air to water ratio - this doesn't factor in any low E gun or the fans at the base and assumes the training run soaks up 12000 CFM of their estimated 72,000 available CFM), for a time to completion of 83 hours of runtime. They can move around 10,000 GPM if they get to run wide open, but I doubt they manage to flow everything they have on Superstar. Still, 8000 GPM means they finish in just 31 hours of prime weather.

Note that Superstar is just about all manual and mostly portable land guns - it'll lose production during startup and shutdown and because the guns won't all be tuned just right. It also has to cure and be winched out, the course set, and possibly treated with urea or water injection - all that takes extra time.

But Killington just needs it to go their way, weather-wise, for three or four days of around-the-clock snowmaking ending a handful of days prior to the anticipated start day. Or a week's worth of cold nights with a couple lows around/below 20. However you get to 83 hours.

Credit goes to IceEidelon on Alpine Zone.

Oh no, hackel and friends are going to have to wait till the weekend I get back to Vermont, I’m so sad :(

Seeing some below freezing temps in the forecast again for Killington. Hopefully they open in time for loaded turkey on the 19th.

Sugarbush just moved their projected opening date ahead 4 days to november 19th. resorts really don't need much time to open, i wouldn't start worrying until the week before.

Hella rain projected coming Friday/Saturday..wondering if they'll bite the bullet and fire up the guns mid week

3 pm onwards goes. opening day this week 100% but also world cup so they gotta put a lot of power into that before wednesday so they're cleared

They are able to run north ridge and superstar independently at full power so that shouldn’t be an issue.

At this point tho every other mtn is gonna be caught up, might as well ski somewhere without the hell staircase

Bush will likely be open and others. It’s going to be up to who has top to bottom skiing basically. Good chance I can even ski hurt my wrists skating.

I'm just counting down the days until Hackel's hike and chill that he does there. Hopefully it won't get postponed again

They’re opening Thursday. Bush slated Saturday and loaf as well I think. Won’t get pushed unless something else happens.

i think sugarbush is having a soft opening on fri. that's just gonna be pushover, then they're gonna blast and get spring fling open for the weekend. won't be able to get there until sunday, though only for two hours.
