The way he phrased it made me put off, as if she had asked for it/was in on it. Sure child brides is a normality in Jemen, but this is clearly an agreement between the parents and the man who bought her, so him asking if the girl was "in on it" just seems like a dumb thing to wonder about.

I don't care what is "normal" over there, it is a physical impossibility that she had the capacity to understand the magnitude of a decision like that regardless of whether or not she said the words "I wanna be a bride!". (Gee, I've never heard a female child say that or dress up in a wedding gown so it makes sense right?)
This girl hadn't even gone through puberty and likely didn't even know or comprehend what sex was. I highly doubt she knew what was going to happen after she was essentially sent off to be raped to death.

dude, you need to understand how other cultures work. if you went there and just observed them every day you would think you were in a completely different world. the problem with most people, like here, is they think they have everything figured out and everything is the same in all areas of the world. this culture has been doing this for hundreds if not thousands of years. her mother, grandmother, great grandmother, etc were all married at an extremely young age, and so were their ancestors before them, it's what they have always known. just because one way is normal here does not make it the same there. i'm not saying what happened is okay or right or even justifiable because there clearly was intent in the case of the sexual act and her passing from it, but what I am saying is that marriage at a young age in this culture is the tradition/norm, just as we have our own traditions here.

I understand cultural relativism (I'm a history major and currently studying ethnology, not saying that I "know" how the world works, but saying I'm not just pulling my ideas straight out of my ass), and I know that it is tradition in many countries of the world to still marry their children young.
However, the way Wallishpls posted made it sound as if he was wondering whether the child had asked for it herself. Of course a little 8 year old child isnt gonna go ahead and say "you know what, mom, dad, brothers, uncles, grandparents, I do not want to marry this old man", shes a fucking child who will do what her parents force her to do. The fact that its part of their custom I can "understand" (although I on a personal level think its beyond fucked), however marriages like these are often business settlements or ways for families to tie tribes together. Women (and children) are basically property without any rights. When they do object to something they are either beaten up, raped or killed.
