A gunman opened fire at a Christian university in California Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding three more, authorities said. Police say they have a suspect in custody.

The shooting erupted around midmorning at Oikos University in Oakland and left seven dead, according to City Council President Larry Reid, who says he was told the count by the police chief.

Officer Johnna Watson did not give any other details about the detained suspect.

Authorities earlier described the gunman as a heavyset Korean man in his 40s wearing khaki clothing. "I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Watson said.

KTVU-TV reported that the shooter was a student and opened fire in a classroom.

Earlier, television news footage showed a chaotic scene as heavily armed officers swarmed into the building in search of the shooter. The footage also showed bloodied victims on stretchers being loaded into ambulances.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the Oakland Tribune that he heard about 30 gunshots in the building. "I stayed in my office," he said.

Angie Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle that she saw a young woman leave the building with blood coming from her arm and crying: "I've been shot. I've been shot."

The injured woman said the shooter was a man in her nursing class who got up and shot one person at point-blank range in the chest before spraying the room with bullets, Johnson said.

"She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said the victim told her, "but they never knew how far he would go."

Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup.

According of its website, Oikos University offers studies in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine. Phone calls to Oikos were met with busy signals Monday and its website was slow.

Now mike-o will be here to tell us that this guy does not deserve the death penalty, despite absolute proof that he murdered 7 innocent people.

Life in prison without paroll is probably worse then the death sentence...

Not to mention the death penalty takes a stupid amount of time, resources, money, and is morally questionable.

to be honest if you fiscally worried the death penalty is a far better option, a life sentence is hugely costly., the main issue is the morale one. i don't condone the death sentence..

in another thread someone posted the numbers. it was three times as costly to go through all the appeals during the death penalty and whatnot than it was to house a prisoner for 60 years. I'll try to dig up the thread

That just blew my mind. The entire first part of your post is wrong, and I disagree completely with the second part of your post.

You're opinion is the exact opposite of mine. You're like the anti-me.

always.

and this guy will probably be living the rest of his life in a mental institution, look at the guy who shot congresswoman Giffords. he currently sits in a mental institution indefinitely until they find him able to stand trial.

the same thing will happen with the kid in Ohio who shot and killed some high school students, they arent going to try him as an adult so there is no way he could get the death penalty, which i feel is completely justifiable in a case of a person killing multiple innocent people.

life in prison means the tax payers will have to pay for these people for the rest of their lives, that is not right.

i feel an eye for an eye is the best thing in a situation like this.

"Using conservative rough projections, the Commission estimates the annual costs of the present (death penalty) system to be $137 million per year.

The cost of a system which imposes a maximum penalty of lifetime incarceration instead of the death penalty would be $11.5 million per year."

both death penalty and life in prison are expensive. its stupid, he shot a bunch of people. bullets are cheap, put one in his head and be done with him

that site is comparing the cost to convict someone to the death penalty from what it looks like.

i could be wrong and i think we oculd both agree that the whole system needs reform.

for example these people that do school shootings usually admit they did it then take their statements back, get a lawyer to find some legality in their case and we are paying for them for the rest of their lives. no need to give them their rights, they took away the lives of multiple innocent people, they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent, and that is the death penalty.

and make it quick and cheap. after your found guilty, youre walked to the basement of the court house and executed.

1337, why are you against the death penalty?

yeah, life without parole is way worse than death.

But seriously the last like 10 shootings in american schools less then 10 people get shot, I would never shoot anyone unless they had a gun to my head, but im just saying a person is a pretty big target, these shooters are fucked in the head with motor skills just as bad as moral skills

not completely what i am saying.

there still needs to be time for an appeal if needed because as we have seen in the past judges make mistakes in the trial process.

this case seems pretty cut and dry. numerous witnesses saw him do it.

bullet right in his head. better yet, one in his stomach so he is left to bleed.

sort of what i am saying, but the problem is this will not happen. he will more then likely not even be prosecuted as a normal criminal.

The problem with that is if you change it then innocent people will be put to death. Honestly I think its almost better that he can now spend life in jail rather then had he just gone and commit-ed suicide. His life is going to be hell, if hes such a little pussy that he needed a gun to do what he had to do jail is going to be a whole lotta dick sucking and ass rape. Killing him isn't even an eye for an eye since he killed 7 people. Plus probably not in this case but if they get the wrong person and kill them, what happens when 5 years down the line they figure out they made a mistake woops to late. Hear about it all the time people who were wrongfully convicted getting released years later. Its hard to say cause people like this don't deserve to live at all but I think prison would actually be worse for them because this guy probably wanted to die anyways.

I believe there are worse ways to really punish a person than simply killing them. It seems barbaric to just go kill someone, and not to mention what makes you better than they are, if you're still killing someone? Is that not what they are in that position for doing?

As Ghandi said, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"

not really what i am saying. but in cases like these the person is clearly guilty and should not have the option of being ruled instable to stand trial.

yes, there are a lot worse punishments for crimes then the death penalty. but why does a person like this deserve to live? this really goes against my faith, but these people have serious issues. especially when dealing with adults.

bring out the electric fucking chair...

anyone that does shit like this deserves to be fry like motherfucking bacon

lol not even close, but i do hold some beliefs and the death penalty is one of those, why do these people deserve to live with what they have done?

Well saying someone is clearly guilty takes several trials and needs to be proven 100% which is really hard with all the legal loopholes and how many lawyers are out there now. I wouldn't really call being locked up in a cell your whole life with 1 hour of solitary yard time that much of living. People have been forced to confess before or tricked into saying something they don't mean and having there words twisted. Everyone deserves the right to a fair trial. The justice system is pretty fucked up for sure but Making another change to make it easier to convict/kill people is just going to make it much much worse.

I'm against the death penalty because it's no more than disguised revenge. There really is no difference between the government killing a murderer and a murderer shooting up a school because he was bullied. Even when it's government ordered, killing for the sake of revenge isn't right. When no alternative options exist and killing is the only way to protect people, then I can condone it.
