Well they still have to pay taxes to the national government, but it is true that some states with small populations like New Hampshire, Montana, and some others have no sales tax. But everyone has to pay taxes to the national government which can be up to around 50% if you make lots of money. And everyone has to pay property tax if they own property. The only difference between states is sales tax.

... and they pay about $4/gal. for gas, but buy the raw gas for less than we do in the states (that means they have a HUGE gas tax).

Yea but in Sweden they provide alot of healthcare and housing and the like. If you want to see a nearly socialistic system that works effectively and provides a great living standard for its citizens, Sweden is your example.

 
sorry... but that is such bullshit. the money the government takes away from the citizens doesn't NEARLY compensate for what they give. i've been living in sweden for the past year, and the vision that most people have of sweden is completely wrong. they have tones of poverty and crime that you never see. the reason the taxes are so high is because the government will completely support you if you don't want to work. if somebody imigrates to sweden, the government will completely support them for two full years. they don't have to work at all! if they still don't want to work after two years, that's cool, the government will still support them. not that swedes are bad, the average swede works really hard and could make a lot of money if the government didn't take it all away from them. its just a bunch of them don't feel like working, so they drag the rest of the population down with them.

Nik- You would know better since you live there and my only experience is from visiting for a couple days and what I've read. I wouldn't know the real complexities of the situation and social structure, but there's a study on my desk right now that has Sweden's per capita income at $23,750, one of the highest in the world. Just for comparison the study says the per capita income of the U.S is $26,980 and Canada's is $19,380. Like I said you have a whole lot more firsthand experience, but I just thought I'd share those facts.

 
i'm not saying that swedes are poor. most of them work really hard and would be super rich in the states or some country that doesn't have such high taxes. its just that a BUNCH of them don't want to work so they sit around and let the government take care of them, thus the high taxes the ass-rape all of the hard workers.
