650 hp VW

then you need thicker glasses, it looks exactly like any other GTI only it has air intakes on the side for the mid engine.

yes i'm dead serious, without anything to refrence it to it still looks like a gti, and if you put it next to a regular gti off the showroom floor it'll just look like it got squished down and fattend out round the fenders, it is not awe inspiring, it is not a supercar, and it is not cool.

the right way to make a VW supercar

You're a fucking idiot. It's a tech demonstration car... is it even going into production? The article states that it was conceived to demonstrate the strength of the Golf chassis and of VW engineering, and it does just that.

It is not meant to be a traditional production supercar and nobody really gives a fuck what you think about it, least of all the VW engineers and designers responsible for it

If I saw that thing on the street, I would stare. I think you would too, honestly.

*tear* :( :( you're right i'm stupid, that GTI is probably the coolest thing i've seen on tarmac, it goes real fast and is really cool. really.

but actualy no that car would not catch my attention on the streets, i wouldent pause to check it out, i'd be more interested in a cross-eyed morgan aero 8 than a squished VW

as for proving the strength and technological prowess of VW, boy they've convinced me. i mean if their goal was to stay true to the GTI, they nailed it head on didn't they, with the front engine and fwd layout... er uh... and the engine has double the er... right so basicaly it's a totaly different car with the exterior of a GTI to prove how totaly awsome the GTI is.

shit i hope toyota buys a ferrari and puts a prius shell on it to show how sporty and eco-friendly their cars can be...

VW mangled up the presentation of this car, and what i'm pointing out is that if you said wow to this car, you're daft

If you claim you wouldn't slow down and take a look at that thing if it passed you on the road, then honestly you're just a fucking liar.

A lot of people fetishize cars. I've met people who can recognize totally obscure models and rattle off lists of facts about them. But these people usually don't actually understand even the most basic aspects of how cars work, so they certainly can't appreciate the level of engineering skill and refined design that's present in most supercars. I think you're part of this group, because you don't seem to really care about anything except flashy design. Whatever floats your boat, I guess... but if you can't appreciate every aspect of a car then you aren't qualified to be criticizing it.

I don't really like the way this car looks. I don't like the GTI to start with, and this car looks very ricey. But I can appreciate the level of engineering that it takes to gracefully and effectively mid-mount a 6 liter engine into a golf without significantly altering the chassis or body. Your prius and ferrari analogy is a great illustration of how you have no idea how a car like this is made.

You need to realize there's more to a car than body styling.

1. i'm not a liar, i would not check out that car, it looks stupid, and and there would be no point to stop and look at it.

when you walk past a carrera GT or a ford GT or a ferrari enzo or a zonda or anything there is more on display to marvel at the work that went into making those machines...the engines are on display to see, there is something to see inthose cars

the GTI has flared fenders and is shorter.

it's not as if VW is the first auto company to mid mount a fwd chassis...rember this?

what you're missing is that performance and numbers do not play as an important role when it comes to supercars, they all are fast and can get around turns the point is to be flashy and to have outragous styling.

example: Koenigsegg CCX vs. Bugatti Veyron

extreemly close in performance, but not in popularity...explain that without the having the flashy design (and a ubertech ginormous engine with more turbos than your local pepboys has in stock is part of the flashy design)

i put it in the same catagory as the focus and the civic because those are every day drivers that have seen some radical modifications to their powerplants and such... they have made a rwd 450 something hp focus before, and as you said, you wouldent consider THAT to be a supercar, as you shouldent a GTI

no one, including vw, even mentioned it being a 'supercar'. not once in the article is that word even mentioned.

this is what the article says, "The GTI W12-650 is a show car, nothing more, nothing less, but it does show the enormous potential offered by the Golf platform."

SHOW CAR

i wasn't telling VW this i was telling all the posters who were saying WOW and HOW MUCH??? and those that thought that it WAS a supercar

really i don't care about it that much, but for those that think/want it to be production bound, i'm pointing why that idea is silly

thats your personal opinion and i can rspect that. you need to understand that other people may feel differently. posting pictures of other supercars only shows what you like and has nothing to do with anybody else's opinion. sorry

i wouldnt talk to much shit about beetles theres a guy here who has a t4 on his and its pushing over 400hp it would walk all over my car and yours im sure

the best part of waking up....

I was actually thinking of the clio V6 in relation to this GTI (and I would rather own the renault, honestly) but it's really a whole different beast simply because all the specs of its engine are about half of what this GTI is packing. 3 liters, V6, 250 bhp is nothing compared to the 6 liter W12 with >500 bhp.

I think where we fundamentally disagree is that I wouldn't even try to fit this car into the "supercar" category in the traditional sense. I think most if not all supercar chassis are independently developed or derived from another supercar (ala Audi R8) and I can't think of a single one using the body of a "mere mortal" car.

It may have performance approaching some supercars but if you look at it you're going to be like "damn, check out that GTI with the W12". But that's enough for me. This is a very cool car, and I bet you that sitting inside it feels smooth and refined like most VWs (the Veyron, for instance, is special partly because it is so smooth at high speed). Most people who see this are going to want to take a peek in the rear window to see that beast of an engine.

On another note, which do you think is more popular... the CCX or the Veyron? Koenigseggs cost about half what the Veyron does, and I bet you they've sold more cars. More people know about the Veyron just because VW has a very big marketing machine, I think.

Anyway, it's not a supercar by my definition (or yours), but it's still a very cool car, as evidenced by the majority of replies in this thread and threads elsewhere concerning it. The feat of effectively dropping an engine that big into a GTI (in a refined manner... this is verrrry different from one guy doing a swap in his garage) is not something to be scoffed at... you can have your opinion, I guess, but trying to come on this forum and act like the super cool guy who isn't impressed one little bit is a little immature, honestly. It's not constructive and it's irritating.

OH MY GOD. ive been thinking they should do a rwd GTI supercar for so long. the GTI is one of my favorite cars ever built, and this thing just makes me cream my pants. im in love.
