$65 mounting fee...Im sorry what???

Not really true. Online sales aren't hurting these shops as much as their inability to adapt to changing markets.

ding ding ding we got a winner... if those shops had paid any bit of attention in the last 5-10 years, they would also sell stuff online... kinda like jibij.

dude , that sucks my local shop charged me 20 bucks, for taking bindings off a pair of skis and putting them on a diffrent pair of skis and it was done in like a day ?

Josh don't you agree that physical retailers often can't afford to compete with the pricing of online retailers such as backcountry.com etc?

i was going to read a thread just for the lulz but then i read it was ski co and was like whaaaaat? i've gotten a lot of stuff from them over the years but having since moved to burlington and having ski rack down the street? yeaaaaaah. i don't know, i haven't been there in a year or two because every story i hear is that they're getting progressively worse. when i was getting skis mounted one time there, there was an idiotic wait period on when i could pick them up, but as soon as my mom jokingly mentioned throwing the dude a $20, his ears perked up like a freakin' bloodhound.

good luck next time dude, but you def should have taken your business elsewhere instead of paying that.

ps- who said sports authority? they mount shit? i don't think i'd EVER get my stuff mounted there... personal bias maybe, idk

why didn't you take your skis to dewitt sports? oh right, ski co bought them out...well why didn't you take them to lunds then? shit. ski co bought them out too. ski co needs some competition that won't sell out to them.

I went to ask around for mounting prices. i asked one store, the guy says $80! i had a double take and asked as if i might have heard him wrong. then i got home and called just to make sure, and it was infact $80. i will never ever buy a thing from that store

Oh, I would never get a single thing from there. But my father told me that realistically in the Syracuse area, all that is left is the Ski Co and places such as Sports Authority and Dicks...
... so I threw it out there.

Anymore than $25 is pure robbery IMO. And charging somone for a mount when they buy the skis there should be criminal.

I don't pay for mounts though, and never will. Either know someone, and be chill, or measure twice, drill once.

The big bald guy name is Nate. He's a scary mother fucker. Don't get in his way or piss him off more. I worked for him and I never talked to him unless he spoke first haha

i haven't paid for a mounting in like 3 years /claimjust befriend the shop techs and bring them beer and they should do it for free or cheapi've never heard of a mounting being more than 40 so you got ripped the fuck off

thats insane. mine was 35 and i didnt buy anything at that shop. i had never even been there before.

HA! around south central PA..... $75. Consider yourself lucky. I had to go 45 mins into maryland just to get a mount for $50 (luckily i had to drive through there and gas prices were lower then). That place just raised there prices to $75 New years day.

well since you had them do work before asking a price you deserved what you got!

maybe this will teach you to get a price before getting shit done and to support your local shop. you bought boots and bindings? big deal. consider yourself lucky that the shop actually carries additional bindings that can be sold. a lot of shops i know buy their skis/bindings on a 1/1 ratio.

my shop just bumped their price from 65 to 80. fucking kill me. im gonna try to talk them into giving me the old price though.

no, how do you know a binding is working like it is designed? there is a machine that is back there to test if the binding is releasing at the right force.

Hue what the fuck is up man?

and i get jacked like that in rochester, 70 bucks for a mount because i did not by my stuff from them, they have the nerve to charge me this after i pay 300 for boots the week before, i try to support my local shops but they make it really hard to come back, i prob wont

they shouldnt charge 65 bucks even if they were mad that you didnt buy skis from them. definitely support local shops but some places dont really have 'local' shops. theres plenty of shops here that i would never buy from just cause they suck so much. theres nothing wrong with getting your skis mounted at a shop you didnt buy them from. you are still supporting them buy giving them business. i wouldnt ever go back to them if i were you

I have never even heard of a charge over 30 bucks...

as for why mounting requires a charge at all? its not just drilling 16 holes into a couple blocks of wood and fibreglass and calling it a day.. if your shop is any smart at all, they also test your bindings to your boots to make sure they release correctly and at the right moment - as to not blow your knees out. Granted, most kids on this site weigh about 140 lbs, and still set their dins to 11 or 12 (understandable..) so this is deemed almost useless, but still.. its required by law and if not performed, shops are definitely liable.

yooooo Brett man whats goin on hahah

Fuck ski co. right? Unless your from rochester or syracuse you won't understand hah

Anyway, im over it, not building any type of relationship because Im the fuck outta NY in a year or so.

But Brett we gotta hit up holiday, are you back at school yet?

now thats hard to believe. mounting a ski is not rocket science. u put the jig on the ski, drill some holes, and screw that shit in...

supply and demand brother the shop i work at charges $60 for mounts for skis not bought from our store. We can do that basically because we are pretty much the only place to get it done other than at the local mountains. Thats the east coast for yah

all the local shop charge 50 by me unless you buy your shit there obvisously the price goes down

and i only had to pay 10 to get them mounted

I'm a physical retailer. It's not like I have some warehouse with no physical presence; I didn't even have web sales the first year. I've had to adapt and change my business in order to compete, and that's just a rule of business. We charge the same prices in store that we do online. Prices aren't even set by us. The manufacturer sets the prices, so it's not like online stores are selling stuff at some unreasonable price anyway. These shops can't be doing the same thing they did 20 years ago and expect it to just keep working. When I first started, there were a lot of things different than what I do now, but if that wasn't the case, I wouldn't be here.

Dude, are you for serious?

Mounting takes all of 10 minutes and if you're buying bindings and boots, they should probably just mount in good faith. The only place I've really heard of shops refusing to sell bindings was in the Toronto area. It's kind of weird to me because bindings will last several hundred days but skis definitely won't. I'm replacing my skis every season but my bindings last much, much longer. I think it's mostly shops that cater primarily to the weekend warrior and casual skier (to which the GTA has many) that won't sell bindings. It's kind of absurd. They can just order more binders if they're running low and have them within a few days.

You can claim Caveat Emptor all you want but this dude got fuckin' rippppppped off.

Also, I can't believe the prices in this thread.

My shop, A1 Boardshop in Halifax (Go there, they're SICK), charges $30 CAD I believe. If you buy skis or bindings, they just throw it in. The most I've ever paid was 60 francs in Switzerland and was a bit pissed but hey, Switzerland.

The prices on the US East Coast are crazy! Woah!

I like to think I know some local techies well enough to get a deal. Sometimes they charge me $20 for a same day remount, sometimes it's free with a 6-pack and a casual mention that you'd like to ski tomorrow.. And then sometimes it's $45 and the idiots mount them in the wrong place.

It really all depends who's working.

You do not NEED a jig. It's called freehanding. And you do not need certification. You need certification if you're doing binding related stuff in a shop.

dont buy from ski company everyone that works there doesnt know what there talking about what so ever. who is this anyway? you ride at lab?
