just what is it says. I want abangs cuz masterminds get all sorts of shit around here i think... but how will abangs hold up on groomers? oh and what bindings?
 
abangs would not be your ideal choice. chattery at high speed. just not a groomer ski. fun as shit in the park. i like them all over the hill cuz i usually ride the whole hill like a park.
 
neither, if you want to do groomers the abangs won't do well and neither will the masterminds. The abangs will chatter like a mofo + the masterminds are a softer ski which doesn't translate to groomers.
 
I actually got a pair of Masterminds this year just to use until I can afford a nice pair of skis (broke my old pair that I only had for one season) and I'm starting to like them a lot more than I thought I would. They are nice on rails and boxes but don't really have the greatest pop off of jumps.

As for on the groomers you really don't notice how flexible they are at all. If you are looking for a nice cheap pair of skis then go with the afterbangs.
 
I have 09-10 Afterbangs with Marker Jesters on them and I love them. But, they are in no way quality groomer skis. They get use point A to point B just fine, but there nothing for high speed. I love them for groomers in the sense of playing around, like buttering or goofing around.

All in all, if your going to be in the park the majority of the time, go for the afterbangs. If your just looking for a groomer ski, bail on them and look for something else.
 
If he's looking at Masterminds or Afterbangs, I would assume that's out of his price range.

If it isn't, that would be an excellent choice.
 
Dynastar 6th sence, good sidecut for both types of skiing, lightweight and can handle high speed very well.
 
spend the extra buck for the chronics. bomber construction, really good for jumps and trying new things because they are stiff and its hard to bottom out. obviously good on rails too.

chronics are very similar to the ar7 in some ways but not in others. in your price range (assuming) check out the el ray
