540's

Okay so I've been trying to learn how to 5 for a couple weeks now, 5 times I have been super commited and I get enough air and all but I get to the 3 and just stop spinning, I know all I need to do is keep my head turned over my shoulder and I'll get the rest of the spin but I just can't seem to pull it off, tomorrow is the last day of the season for me and I really want to be able to 5 before the season ends. I need tips for manning up and to keep spinning that extra 180. Thanks for any helpful answers!

Sparknotes: Cant do 540, get stuck at 3 in air, stop spinning mid air, need tips to keep spinning.

close your eyes and hope.
but really just keep your shoulders turning and add a 180 to the 3

I'm doing it on the biggest jump that I can get air off of and has a decent landing. Everythings perfect except for the spinning!

It sounds like you and stopping your spin when you spot your landing. Practice 180s on the same jump and keep your eye on the landing the whole time. Once you got those just set for 5 and don't open up when you are at 3. Think of it as a 3 into a 180

i just landed mine woot woot! I actually landed it first try but i just would find a jump that i did a real slow 3 on then i got a little bit more speed then normal and threw a bit hard and it came around clean

you dont need to throw any harder than a 3 at all. just when you see your landing just bring your skis around like your doing a switch up. you dont need to turn your head for a 180 just your skis

Doing my first ones I had a tiny 5 foot jump in my backyard with a soft landing that I hucked as hard as I could and would usually get about 450, and this really gave my the feeling of spinning past 3. I went to the hill the next day and warmed up with a 3 then spun a little harder and stomped it first try. I also learned 7s that day, once you just get the feeling, adding a 180 to a trick seems like no big deal

shoulder allignment is the key. practice doing 1st and picking a specific point to spot, and allign your upper torso with that point. then try it with 3s, then try throwing the 180 in with your hips. bottom line is spot your landing with the 3 and keep spinning from the waste down

there were a couple years when every time i tried a 5, i would come into it with a huge prewind and just huck it really hard but then i would lose my composure right away and never get much past 3. but last season i was 3ing this jump over and over and i just realized that i was very conscious of where i was in the air as i came around, and that doing another 180 would be pretty easy. so next lap, i just threw a 3, and once i came around i just consciously added another little 1 and stomped my first 5. thinking of it as a 3 with a 1 at the end made it a lot easier for me to understand the mechanics of it.

I just told myself I was going for a 720. I actually ended up doing a 720, but after that 540's were a piece of cake.

I never had a problem going from 3 to 5 but I know some one that has. Maybe instead of thinking of it as a big step up in rotation you think of it just like a 180 at the end of a 360. might sound stupid but think with a 180 you are looking at your landing the whole time and you let your legs turn underneath you. so you come round 360 spot your landing and let your legs turn underneath you just like a 180. spotting your landing is gonna make it easier for you not to wash out as well. Once you get them it will seem like nothing.

i dont know if someone has already said this but.at 360 most people commonly open their legs up to stop them from spinning more, at 360 DONT open your legs and just wip your head for the last 540 Just get an older guy on your mountain to teach you thats how I learned

if you cant get it after all this advice 5s just arent for you, skip them and go straight to 7

I had the same problem with unnatural 5's until I threw a little harder, and once you make it to 3, keep your head turned and spot the back of the takeoff. Keep looking over your shoulder until you get the rotation. Your body will follow where you look.

learn how to whip threes around off the smallest mounds of snow you can find. Then find a super small jump with just enough additional airtime to huck a 5 and get it around super fast. You will get the feel for the rotation, and slowly move to bigger and bigger jumps. If you cant throw fast fives of knolls or off very small jumps, you have no business trying to learn them on a jump over 10 feet.
dont think 360+180. fives are a whole new game. Just like cork 5 is much different than cork 7

snow wasnt very fast, I wasn't getting as much air time as I was on saturday, I guess theres always next year :\
