Kinda funny. This Calgary radio station had some contest where it was put to a vote of whether to give the money away or burn it. I don't think they were expecting it, but the majority of people voted to burn it. A lot of outrage over it.

I'm glad they burned it. Hilarious to see how angry people get over something like this

They spent half the video discussing how fucking stupid this was. And then they did it anyway.

Give it to a fucking youth hockey league, buy some canned goods, whatever. But what did they do?

"Hey some random fucking people tuned into our bullshit show and said burn $5k so here goes"

I always assumed it was illegal to intentionally destroy money. Hmmm....

Kinda like Stampy in the Simpsons.

I'm not sure if it's the same in Canada, but in the UK the whole thing around not being allowed to burn money since it carries an image of the queen is a myth, my guess is that it is also just a myth elsewhere in the commonwealth. I think that whilst it is not illegal to burn money providing it's yours, it is however illegal to deface currency. There's always a chance of defaced currency 're-entering' circulation, where as incinerated money would find such a feat somewhat harder. Basically, feel free to exercise your legal right and burn as many £20 notes as you wish, just don't draw a mustache on Lizzie.

law in Canada states it's illegal to deface or destroy or tamper with coin currency. there are no laws about bills.

Samesies, but my assumption would be the notion of making a souvenir you intend to keep and not destroy/throw away. Not to mention it could potentially increase in value, so there's probably some legalese bullshit about an investment.

straight from wikipedia so 100% WRITTEN IN STONE TRUTH:

The process of creating elongated coins is legal in the United States, almost all parts of Japan, South Africa and parts of Europe. In the United States, U.S. Code Title 18, Chapter 17, Section 331 prohibits "the mutilation, diminution and falsification of United States coinage." The foregoing statute, however, does not prohibit the mutilation of coins, if the mutilated coins are not used fraudulently, i.e., with the intention of creating counterfeit coinage or profiting from the base metal (the pre-1982 copper U.S. cent which, as of 2010, is worth more than one cent in the United States).[8] Because elongated coins are made mainly as souvenirs, mutilation for this purpose is legal, when location of the coin presser has the permit from the mint to do so.

I love the aspect about profiting from the metal. The fed can print money and devalue the currency but if you profit from the metal inside a coin that's a crime.

LOL

$5000 Canadian is $5000, not $0.87? Did you mean US Dollars? You have to specify in order to not look like an ignorant American douche. You don't own the dollar sign, dick.

The joke didnt make any sense though.. You don't know what it's like living in Whistler where tourists come in and say "wait, so how much is that going to be in DOLLARS??"

or they stick out there hand full of Canadian change and say, "Can you just grab it? I don't get your money!"......... FFS 4 out of 6 coins are exactly the same!

Shit gets my blood boiling, sorry everyone. /rant

Wanna know why it sucks that defacing currency is illegal?

Because copper is at $3 a pound, and it takes 150 pennies dated 1982 and before to make a pound. There's money to be made there but it's illegal!

i have a crazy story about this hippy guy burning money, i went to this party at these really chill hippies house and they all had big vats of mushroom tea. some of the peoiple were like 60. anyways we were jamin out having a great time and this shaman guy came. he was giving out weed to everyone and burning it. then i saw him burn money. like 50's and 100's. my buddy was liek dude i wanna jump in there for that. hahahhaha i was like i know me too we better not. it was super crazy and tripped out. one of my other friends claimed he saw magic when the guy was burning it.

They seemed rather disappointed themselves in that video, a whole overall theme of great disappointment.

That's why you don't listen to pop music, it'll make you want to burn money.
