Is Candide that influential or just better than everyone? Nobody can even get on his fucking level

yea he's pretty influential, but the 5 skiers first mentioned in OP are all arguably more influential than Candide.

this is seriously tough.

mckonkey for changing ski design

wallisch and bdog are tied for changing how everyone skis rails

jon olson has gotta be on there for getting the dub cork/dub rodeo train going

any of the numbus guys for getting people jibbing and doing switch stuff in pow

jp auclair for basically setting the standard for guys like candide and tanner and getting the revolution started

you are an idiot. . Candide is probably the most influential freeskier of all time..

So blown away no one else has said JF cusson.. with out cusson freeskiing wouldn't even exist. .

good =/= influential.

Yes, he is crazy influential, but he also didn't exactly single handedly revolutionize any aspect of the sport like others on the list did.

Jonny Moseley kind of goes without saying. Just his 1 trick at the Olympics is more influential than the entire careers of many other skier.

Auclair also goes without saying. I mean his early segments with Poor Boyz, the 1080, his switch stuff, Armada, etc.

Morrison and McConkey: Freeskiing doesn't just mean park you know. Morrison is far more influential in anything outside of the park than Candide and McConkey, well how do you like your rocker?

Hall I guess isn't as influential than Candide. But he's pushed boundaries in all aspects of the sport, and of course Armada and him just being an inspiration to many many skiers.

Not downplaying how amazingly influential Candide is, but there is definitely good arguments for those other skiers.

And one would have to be an idiot to just say Candide is more influential than all of them.

good summary...

Most of you are going to the mainstream big names right now, you gotta be thinking pioneers of free skiing like JP and Candide, the guys that were at the original super parks, yeah guys like t wallish and e dollo are keeping attention on the sport but I would not call hucking octupla corks influential.

I know glenn plake's time was sort of in the 80s but he still skis today and he skied in 1997 so he can be added to the list

Really Hard to Narrow it down, but here's a top 15:

Candide Thovex

Johnny Mosely

Shane McConkey

Tanner Hall

Seth Morrison

Eric Pollard

Mike Douglas

Vinnie Dorian

Jesus? No, JF Cusson

JP Auclair

3 Phils.

Jon Olsson

Mick D.

Sarah Burke

Ingrid Backstrom

Glen Plake and Scott Schmidt are pre 97 for me.

And people really overlook vinnie, he was the pioneer of switch tricks, and every bit as important as JF and JP, not to mention was the best competitor of the three.

Can't answer the all time top 5, however these are the 5 that inspired me the most when i started freeskiing back in 2005. I mostly saw Norwegian skimovies since im from Norway.

1) Andreas Hatveit

2) Candide

3) PK

4) Sammy Carlson. Truckdrivers all day bby!

5) Charles Gagnier

Honrable mentions:

T Hall

Even Sigstad

Vanular

TJ

Jon

Dumont

I mostly watched park so that's what influated me the most.

peace!

1.) Shane McConkey. Everybody thinks of the Spatula, but he was also the first to ski pow on a fat ski. The Chubb and then the lightly-twinned Huckster.

2.) Mike Douglas. Speaking of twins, he was the driving force behind the 1080 and the Pocket Rocket.

3.) Seth Morrison/Jeremy Nobis. Big mountain pioneers. No more jump turns. Alaskan face pow 11s.

4.) Tanner Hall. He wasn't the first park guy to ski pow or big-mountain lines, but he brought park lines into the pow.

5.) Matt Sterbenz/Jason Levinthal. Start up companies by skiers, for skiers. Giving their athletes the chance to develop and design their own skis, and in some cases, make them. Designs by Pollard and Hoji would not have come about without the freedom to be creative.

Most of these lists cover the top 7 or 8 most obviously influential people, but there are major arguments for Jon Olsson and Tom Wallisch too.

After JOI with the kangaroo flip and the next year with Jon's dub 10 (dj flip or Olsson flip?), it was a different era of park skiing.

I'd argue that Wallish did the most to push modern style and rail technicality in the past several years. Somebody had a thread something along the lines of "What Were You Doing The Night When TWall Superunknown Dropped?" a few years ago, which nicely sums up his early influence.

Pretty tough to define 5 skiers across almost 20 years and 4 or 5 distinctly different "eras" of freeskiing any way you look at it though.

Are you broken? Let me put it this way, who inspired wallisch and harlaut and vinnie cash?

Only one real answer, Candide.

His style is unrivaled
