40D vs. 50D

can anyone who's shot both tell me what the differences are?

is it worth the extra $400 or so to go for the 50D or just save for glass and go for the 50D?

thanks for the help.

i just upgraded to a 40d and i love it, seems like it's similar enough to the 50d that you should put the extra 400 towards glass, the jump from 30d to 40d is huge but it's a much smaller gap up to the 50d. glass is always more important than body and 40d is an amazing body, not much need to go 50d

50 has a few more mp but 10 is plenty, 50 also has a more powerful processor, the screen is the same size but it is way way more sharp (helps alot with fine tuning focusing),
i've heard the frame rate/second is pretty much the same... even though it is listed differently but i heard when the 40 dame out they only had to round to the nearest half second and it's 6.3... but that wasn't directly from canon so that could be wrong.
an extra 400 for glass is always nice but the 50 is a sick body not that the 40 isn't... personally i would just track myself down a used 5d for 1200 or so... but if you're truly set on one of those two i would probably go with the 40.

I agree with the kid who said "used 5D". Go to keh.com and see if you can't find yourself a used 5D, I've ordered a whole Bronica setup from there, so they're legit. The 5D is full frame and takes really good shots, and then your lenses would have a true focal length at least. i don't know about you but i hate that, unless of course, you want a 100 f/2 to be a 160 f/2, then its useful. But hate whn my 50mm becomes an 80mm.

i like the idea of a 5D but prices are kinda an issue, and for a used one, i'd rather go for the 40D or the 50D.

what i'm mostly after is comparisons between the cameras, also the processors.

thanks for the comments guys.

^this makes a lot of sense actually, that's definitely something to think about.

^^allen, that's also very true.

yeah the 50 is nice and the digic 4 is nice too, if it can handle 1080i at 30fps for 12 minutes while shooting 21mp sills at the same time i think it can handle shooting a few 15mp stills. but do you need it? probably not, get yourself a 40, put the 400 away and save it for your next body...
getting a 5d would be a good thought, keeping a full frame in your bag is always smart. but otherwise just save save save for the 1d mark III n, shit is gonna be fire.

well if your in the neighborhood for a 40D, i might suggest checking the refurbished ones on adorama.com

you actually might be able to pick up a refurbished 50D for the price a new 40D drops at, but there isnt much of a difference in them other then little faster processor, and megapixels, i have a 40D and i love it, $800 got me a refurbished 40D + 28-135, 3.5-5.4 is usm lens

anyone got any glass suggestions for either of these if i go body only? something from like 300-400, obviously it's not going to be great but anything better than a kit lens.

tamron 17-50 is a great replacement to the kit lens, or look into the canon 17-40 L if you want to spend a bit morealso you can get the 70-200 f/4 non IS for around 400

i have a 17-85 and it's pretty dope you can pick up one for like 350 used in great shape. if you can drop 670 or whatever get yourself a piece of L glass that will get you either a 17-40 f4L USM or a 70-200 f4L USM, they are great for cheap get one, learn to use it then just save for another. one of those with a 40d and you would stay occupied for at least long enough to save up for another L

i have no use for video in the slightest, if i wanted video, i would buy a nice video camera. that said, i'm not waiting for the 60D hahah.

yeah now my son's soccer games will look excellent in full hd!!!!
no i like rebels, they're fun, but kinda soccer mom cameras

just sell your xti for way more than you should on ebay and buy a cheap 40d on fredmiranda
i did that with an xsi and only lost like 125 bucks

truth, crop bodies are going to fade out eventually. i wonder how long it will take to see the first full frame rebel.
i was diehard digital and still am but there are a few tempting hasselblad 503 CW's on bh for like 800 bucks which shoot 6cmX6cm photos and as jay michelfelder said in an article back in like 05, that is four times the size of a 35mm or full frame sensor... plus they look badass as hell.
