35 mm camera Advice...

Aight so I am just pimpin the new school semester. I am taking photo, I do not have very much experience with still photography, much moreso with video. So I need to get a camera, something under $350, perferably Nikon (other suggestions welcome, my teacher just reccommended Nikon). I need to have everything to have the option of using manual settings. Single Reflux Lens. Someone please guide me in the right direction.

i have a rebel ti, wich you may have seen the rebel 200, well the ti is an upgrade cause it has metal lens mounts instead, it's a super good camera and very user friendly, super nice pictures have come out of mine, if you want a more advanced camera you may wanna check out the elan 7 wich has a built in light meter, both are made by canon wich makes quality products

I have the rebel 2000, I like it better than the Ti. Both have light meters though.....most SLR's do, it would be pretty difficult to take pictures without them.

But yeah the Rebel2000 is a sick camera, I take all my pictures with it, you can check my site to see shot's I've taken on mine.

I use a Canon A1 (you can see my shots in my profile). It's an incredibly durable body but it's from the 80s so it doesn't have auto focus. You can usually pick them up on eBay for a pretty good price. They use the FD lense mount so it's easy to get well prices lenses also.

If you have a bit more money, it's probably worth checking out the Canon A2. It's sorta the equivalent of the Elan 7 but a bit older. One of the campers at High North had one and let me use it.. I was super stoked on it. If you use it in manual focus mode, I think it does 7 frames per second, built in. Great for ski shots (although 7fps may be a little excessive).

If you're looking for a brand new camera in that price range, check out the Rebel line from Canon, or the Nikon F55 and F60.

I use an A2 - it only does around 4.5 fps though. you can get one pretty cheap off e-bay now since its been out for years

From what I've seen the N75 is a pretty sweet camera. But if you're just learning you could get basically anything, whether it be my Yashica from the 70's where I shot an entire roll of film without any sort of battery in the camera, or something new that drains the batteries with a bazillion LCD screens and autofocus and shit.

Maybe buy some local, get what you like for the body but invest the majority of your money in a lens, if you get a manual focus lens you won't be paying much at all for some high quality optics. Browse around in town for stuff, maybe even buy used since you're only spending $350.

But yeah, get a good lens, that's the most important part. Most kit lenses (ones that come with the camera) are the worst lenses in the line-up from that company. If you're going for a Canon Body, get the 28-105mm lens, it's cheap and much better than the kit lens (28-90 I think it is).

I am buying a Canon A2 off Ebay, current bid is $260 so it should end up being pretty cheap considering it ends in a few hours...

Along with it comes a Sigma 30-700mm, APO Macro Super lense and a Canon Speedlite 430ez flash

If it's 30-700, it's probably not very good. That's a HUGE change in one lense. What's the largest f/stop (smallest number)?

A 30mm lense is borderline wide-angle, and a 700mm lense is a super duper duper zoom. That's why it'd be rediculous.

yeah, 30-700mm sounds pretty rediculous. Maybe it's a 300-700? That sounds more familiar. But if you want some real good shots it's best to get a Prime lens (no zoom) because when you zoom with the lens it pulls in air and brings in dust so after a while there's noticable dust INSIDE the lens. Trust me on this... my 80-200mm is like... cloudy inside :| Pretty hard to see with and doesn't produce the greatest shots.

Yeah prime lenses are the best, but not everyone can afford a 15, a 28, a 50, a 135, a 200, etc...

I don't care how much you want to spend, don't go cheap on the lenses...make sure all your lenses, whatever length, are fast, like 2.8 or faster. They cost a lot more, but you will be glad oyu have the speed....especially if you shoot anything action-wise

 
i have a nikon from way back when my mom bought it the same day john lennon was killed... it still works... it has some problems but otherwise a good camera

no snow..

no girls..

There is no such thing as a 30-700 lens from sigma. Or from any company for that matter.

70-300 is a common range.

But yeah... to the guy that said the elan 7 had a built in meter... all newer eos cameras do, including your rebel ti.

I would look into a N65 or N75 from Nikon or rebel ti if you want both full auto and full manual controls.

I'd go with an older canon or nikon body, the full manual ones from the 80s. Cheap and very good quality lenses are easily found.

duncan,i was in the same boat as you awhile back,i ended up with Canon Eos 50....has everything you need,i got mine used with no lens so if you can get one cheap like i did you can still have a couple hundred to get yourself a real nice lens

yeah the k1000 is a good camera for sure if you are learning. i must say though that i got an elan 7 new for 260ish and its a relly good deal for the money. you can do a lot with it. i would just sugest that what ever camera u buy make sure it has a depth of field preview on it.

 
yeah, the k1000 doesnt do shit on its own, you have to get to know how to work the camera. i still think my favorite shot is using tmax b&w 400 with that camera
