I know there ahve probably been a whole lot of threads about this but I can't find any... can someone either give me some advice or tell of a thread they KNOW exists?
Thanks

you can most likely get a 40d from canon for under 1000 which is a totally sick camera

but i must ask the question, what do you like to shoot, and what level are you

hmmm, well i have a buddy who was in a similar situation and he got the 40d...mind you i have been shooting pretty much every week for the past three years and i only have the 350d, hes just a rich bastard.....you might do fine with spending say 550 on the xti and then buying some dope lenses...

what do you like to shoot?

if ur thinking about a d60 you might as well just spend the extra money and get a d80. its so much better for not that much mroe. the d60 is basically a more powerful d40.

i would go with the 40d, I bet you can get a uesd one with some legit lenses for under 1000.

I bought an XTi awhile ago, and i regret not buying a nicer used one with nice lenses

If you are getting a nikon, get the d40 over the d60. its more for your money. plus you could get a 55-200mm lens with the d40 and kit lens for the same price as a d60.

even better! nikon d40 bodies run for just over 300 and that leaves you with a lot of extra $$ for great lens. imo thats a much better deal then the d60 which are around 200$ more.

Canon rebel xti or a Nikon d60 with a mid range lens would be the camera for you and would be under 1000 dollars. If you want a nicer one, look for used Canon 30d or 40d. I'm not very familiar with high end Nikon's so ill let someone else recommend those.

recently i have been using the d200, which to my knowledge is pretty much the equivalent to the 40d

I believe the d200 is more expensive, the body is like 1500 i think for the d200? I dunno, im horrible with canon and nikon comparisons. My 40d brand new with a lens was like 1300.

if your interested in getting a body-only, i recommend a Nikon D80. if your needing a body and a lens get the Nikon D50 and 18-55mm.

The D200 body is between 1000-1200 (pending where you get it), it came down because of the D300 and D700.

Yes there is a D50 but they stopped making it cause they came out with the D40 and the D40x, The reason they primarily came out with the D60 is so you can a cam that can take all the ranges of lenses they offer unlike the D40 series. The price on the D80 (which is an awesome camera) has dropped because they came out with the D90. You can pick up a D80 Body for 600-700.

i have an olympus 420, i like it alot its the smallest dslr on the market and its got a great value. I like it alot because its very customizable. check this site out for camera reviews though its great

also you probably already know this but megapixles are pretty overrated these days. any DSLR you get should have enough, you'll really only need alot if your going to be printing them out large or cropping them alot

if your going to shoot skiing that means sequences so you are going to need something that will shoot 5+ frames per second which means canon 30D or 40D the 40 will shoot 6.5/second which is perfect and it has 2 more megapixels than the 30 which is always nice. you can get a used 40D for like 800 ish, then get yourself a 28-135mm IS USM and you should be under a g by the skin of your teeth

possible used...more realistically i would say 1100-1200 just to give you a heads up, but by all means i am sure there are some great deals out there

Actually the D700 and the D90 are the newest on the market. The D700 came out this past summer and the D90 just came out about a month ago. The D60 has been out since about Late Winter.

Well considering that the D300 is a pro grade cam and the D90 isn't (that and there is a hugh price difference) you can't really compare the 2. The D60 is a great cam though.

Nikon D 40 or 60 kits D80 body and maybe with a shitt lens it would still be under 1000

Entire Canon Rebel line except the XSI again pending on the lens you get with it and how many lenses

Nikon FTW

word im about to get one myself, seems like a really great camera and ive heard really good things about it

i've used the d60 and it is nice but it feels like a little toy in your hand, even the rebel series feels more solid and more like a camera. I would really encourage you to get an EOS 30D or a 40D it will keep you interested and motivated alot more than a cheaper consumer DLSR,

I'm not a propoent of spending tons of money on equpment but the more money you spend, the happier you will be, the rebel series gets updated every year or so, the prosumer series get updated less often but they are higher in quality and technology and the professional series (1d/1ds) get updated even less often but when they get released they are so advanced not to mention they are factory tested to almost a third of a million shots

i as well shoot on a 350d aka rebel xt and i have just inested in lenses such a good way to go

mine came with a 28-90mm so i purchased a 80-200mm and 28-135 macro 1:1 IS and in the process of buying a wide angle 17-55mm

actually the d90 has still not come out. it was announced to come out about a month ago and you should be able to get on in October sometime.

the d60 and d40 feel like toys compared to even just a step up, the d80, but if you're going to be buying around that area get a d40 and get a couple lenses

sequences are for people who cant take pictures.

and i would say nikon d70 if you want to do some flashes the 1/500 synch speed is money

or a canon 30d or 20d

and you should be able to pick up a used 5d now for under a grand
