Post up what you think is the best outerwear out there. Also post some links to the dopest stuff you can find. All the stuff needs to be 20k/20k or higher. Let's see what you got.
 
Dude Gore-Tex for LIFE.

I have a Gore-Tex jacket and I love it. If you have a Gore-Tex jacket and someone is like dude I think your jacket is lame ----> "Dude... Gore-Tex..." That should shut them up. It breaths so well, and it's just like a rain jacket, no wetness AT ALL
 
I was thinking of making this thread, weird.

does anyone know the waterproof rating for H/H, Bergans, and Sweet Protection?
 
Helly Hansen makes 3 different levels of waterproofing:

Helly Tech - 10,000 mm / 10,000 g/cm2

Helly Tech XP - 15,000 mm / 15,000 g/cm2

Helly Tech O2 - 20,000 mm / 20,000 g/cm2
 
Sweetprotection jackets look pretty dope! Too bad they don't have dealers in the US. Still looking for a technical jacket with some style. Would love a XL Royal Saga jacket.
 
Yeah, such a good fucking deal. I really want that L Shitake jacket. $125 is a good fucking deal, and it would match my Scuba pants well. I think last year's Saga was 10/10 and then they brought it up to 20/20. I will never buy another piece of outerwear below 20/20.
 
Why?

I don't get why anything over 10k gets everyone's dicks wet.

IMO, if you need anything better than 10k you're spending too much time on the ground.
 
Dont take this as a rude question, but im just wondering where do you ski at? I myself live here in the PNW, where most of the time the snow is wetter than other areas and i spend a lot of time hiking, and being in the snow. Not on the snow. So while others are in the lodge changing jackets or layers because they have 10k/10k or whatever, i can stay out and stay dry, no matter what. Your point is somewhat valid, most park rats do not need anything as high as 20k/20k, but i'll try to just speak for myself and say that many situations would be uncomfortable, if not miserable, without it.
 
I'm PNW as well.

Now I do own one piece of outerwear over 10k, and that's my Conspiracy Suit. The waterproofing is obviously superior to my three year old HH jacket, but that keeps out moisture just fine.

 
I know you are from the PNW, but you live on the dry side of the Cascade Crest right?

I am from CO, with dry snow like you get on the other side of the cascades, and yeah, over there, in CO, UT, etc, 10k is fine. I skied 10k stuff all the time in Colorado with no issue.

But come up and ski at Baker, Skibowl, Alpental, Meadows, Crystal, etc on a storm day when the snow level is high and you will quickly understand why 10k does not work here.

Hell - I have gotten soaked through wearing gore-tex before, and than is 28k/28k. It can seriously be that wet.

You wanna know what we call skiing pow on a nasty storm day at meadows? Hurricane pow. It can be so wet and nasty that it was the only term we could think to accurately describe it.

So yes, I sort of agree and disagree with the statement. For most of the country, you will get by ok with 10k. In certain places, though, having something in the 20-30k range makes all the difference.

In regards to outerware, I think most ski companies sort of suck. I usually wear high end snowboard stuff because it looks better than ski stuff, fits better, and functions better.

High end Burton (Gore-tex stuff, not their crap stormlite or whatever crap, which says 20k/20k but blows), Sessions, Quicksilver, and Bonfire all kill it.

Helly Hansen and Orage are the only ski companies whose stuff right now I would probably even consider.

If I can afford it, I will be rocking Trew Gear next year, but that is largely because I would love to support a local Oregon company, and the gear hopefully is very bomber.
 
was gonna add....that is you are just hanging out in the park, it is going to be easier to get by on less than if you are out skiing pow everyday.
 
This is my main point, even though it wasn't too clear.

Why does it matter if brands like Saga is 20k? 80% of the people who wear it haven't seen more than 6" of powder in their lives.
 
Oh ok. Yeah, I definitely agree with that. I mean hell, my park gear is like 3k and 5k....although the only days I am ever in the park are when it hasn't snowed in awhile and is at least reasonably nice.

And haha then I would agree with the statement that you would only need it if you were spending large amounts of time on your ass!
 
I think mainly because it means versatility. If they were to make all their gear say, 8k/8k, sure they would get a market from park skiers but maybe only park skiers. People who arent concerned with those ratings. But when they make it 20k/20k, it means that not only park skiers, but backcountry skiers, or anybody looking for a high rating will look at that as an option to purchase up against HH or Goretex or whatever it is. So by increasing their ratings like they did this year, it means their stuff can be used anywhere, not just in the park, which caters to a whole other demographic meaning more sales for them. It gives them a good rep because they make a solid product, and people like me buy it because it not only looks good, but performs even better.
 
Gore-Tex products are guaranteed to be minimum 28 k, i think. So sweet is that. Don't know about bergans, though. But I know they aren't using gore-tex, but instead a membrane called Dermizax.
