Hey M&A,

Begun working on my new demo-reel. It's still in it's early stage and most of the footage is just taken out of already compressed edits (i'll source the footage after I have the picture-lock), so the IQ is shit.

Anyways, I'm hoping I can get your guys thoughts on it.

Stoked to hear whatever you guys have to say.

Cheers,

K

Watching it the first time I thought it was increndible high quality footage!

What I would change if I were you was the cinescope/cinebars you should give the entire edit the same crop. Personally I think you should stick with 16:9 if that is possible. But I guess this is what you ment with "the IQ is shit".

Also although it might be because it is still in early stage, I would add some text using a minimalistic font. With your name, year and website for example.

I hope you can do something with this and props on the work man, it is already amazing!

Loved it. Only critique is id make the crop the same on all shots. So you arent having black bars take away from how epic some of those shots are

^^ if you don't know what "IQ" stands for you probably aren't going to be much help.

I think the different crops were fine. Iv'e seen more then a few pro demo reels that include different crops, If anything it shows a client you can shoot with multiple crops.

I don't think it flowed all that well towards the end. When the music is really fast paced the action isn't syncd up, longer slow mo clips while the beat is quick for example.

You have easily some of my favorite footage on this site and on vimeo so I know you can create something mind blowing.

Also upload a full res version if you get a chance, that resolution was atrocious haha.

Looked pretty epic. Must say I can't wait to see the final result. One thing I noticed tho, was that some of the clips seemed a bit grainy. I don't know if the reason for this is high ISO usage, or simply the fact that, as you said, the IQ is not yet as it should be.In the end, it doesn't really change anything, because the clips together with the music looked solid like a brick wall, with a great flow to it. Thank you for sharing this "first-look" on what I'm sure will become a fantastic Demo Reel. Good luck!

that was dope, and it looked really fun to shoot, the only thing I would add to the people above me is maybe get a little bit of wedding footy in earlier, it really felt like a wedding segment at the end, instead of kind of interspersed like the rest, take the paddle boarding for example, it was kind of spaced through, even just one wedding shot in the first third would make it dope I think. I really liked it though, made me stoked like few other videos do, almost that same kind of feeling as that backcountry.com ad. Nicely done

Job well done Kalum. Always have been extremely impressed with your work. The music and filming flowed beautifully.

I definitely agree with Jacob that towards the end the shots didn't sync up as well as the rest of the reel did. Just some minor tweaks and speed changes I think will benefit the reel.

Wonderful job though!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback, took a lot into consideration. Here's a newer, higher-quality version. I did a rough grade, but it needs some work (as the whole reel does). I'd be stoked to hear your thoughts!

AMAZING reel Kalum... I honestly think that it looks done (besides some minor stuff like grading etc.) to near perfection and any other changes would solely be based on personal preference. You have been to some amazing places...I'm pretty jealous...care to share some of the locations? and also one comment was that I'm not really sure what kind of customers you're aimed at with your reel but it just seemed like most of your stuff was action sports, outdoorsy stuff with the exception of a few wedding shots... not that this is bad but just an observation... I can't comment on whether this is good or bad because I'm not sure what you're looking to get out of the reel but it seems like it could be a potentially limiting factor in some cases. Amazing job!
