2009 X GAMES TO FEATURE EQUAL PRIZE MONEY FOR MEN AND WOMEN

i've never heard one pro guy skier say, "i'll push myself harder for X, the prize money is bigger." x is all about the podium, notoriety, and experience, i think most guys going into x don't even know the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, prize money unless they've been there before. to say this will push skiing harder is absurd. if true, unhindered equality existed, women's competition wouldn't exist....sexism allows women to compete at X, it's a fact.

i dont really believe this is fair because there are not nearly as many female pro skiers and the men are the ones who are the biggest draw

I think its a great idea and I really hope it opens up the door for legimate womens talent.

i was there. the women in the final ripped so hard it was rad.

good time too, on a side note. if you can make it to a tour stop, do it. it's a great party.

Oh man...I can't get over how many guys are getting PMS'y about this....unreal...scared guys?

so are you saying money is the main catalist to get "legitimate women's talent?" i was thinking the same thing the other day: there are so many talented girl skiers out there, but they just don't enter X because the money isn't right:) for real, i was at hood and this girl was doing sw double corks and i said, "damn why haven't i seen you at X?" she replied with a legitimate talented tone, "the money isn't right and until it is i'm going to keep that door shut."

i seriously doubt anyone is scared. especially when the average good skier on this site would be a top women's pro. i've been saying it for years and little has changed.

This thread sounds like a conversation between a bunch of men in the 1950's...grow up.

To be honest I think they deserve it. Their level of skiing may not be as high as the men's skiing but by allowing equal prize money it will help women's skiing progress. I know for a fact if it was the other way round we'd be bitching about it.

why is money the major factor in women's progression? i don't think money matters for progression one bit. look at tom wallisch, he made next to nothing last year, yet he might be considered one of the most progressive skier's on the planet. any product, tool, contest, MONEY, or other factor(s) hindering woman's progression is a bold face lie/excuse. the only thing hindering women's progression is the women themselves. look at how many non-profit crews, film companies, clothing companies, ski companies all created by man to help progress the sport and more importantly, to have fun. there isn't one item in the aforementioned list that woman have for skiing, NOTHING! women don't bond with one another, they don't form posses, they don't make a legitimate effort at filming an all woman's crew, shit, most girls who ski rather ski with dudes. here i am, PETE ALPORT saying it loud and clear, WOMAN DON"T DESERVE THE SAME MONEY AS MEN AT X GAMES.

theres no chick on the Big mountain tour that could podium in the mens... maybe make finals if there lucky... as usual your dreaming..

as for Chicks getting equal prize money.... theres like 2 or 3 chicks who actually ride pipe with style. Davina williams, that miriam jager chick and thats it.. sarah burke has skills but she doesnt ever do proper grabs.. or change up her pipe run,. its been the same for like years.. bar maybe adding in a hucked to teh hills 1080... mad props to the chick she kills it.. but chicks really need to step up to deserve equal prize money at x games,,

This isn't reparations, they shouldn't get shit. I'm ain't great, nowhere near sponsored and I could school the top girls in slopestyle. Shouldn't get paid if they can't do shit. Might as well just sponsor the hot ones anyway since they are all going to suck balls, oh wait. Fuck bitches, make money.

I hope I don't offend any girl skiers in saying that I think this is kinda of a bad idea... I mean it's true that the girls don't make that much, but the female level of competition is so low compared to the mens. As Cosco said there is no way that girls are gonna start throwing double corks and unnatural spins and whatnot. A winning run for a girl probably wouldn't even qualify a guy into finals. If a girl did a switch 10 she'd win. That is a trick that is a standard for competition, now guys need both switch 10's, and doubles, and whatnot. The rail game is soo much higher too. I think it is awesome that the amount of money put out for the chicks is getting bigger, but then the guys should get more money in turn. Also, there are way more guys in the sport, so not to mention that our level of competition is so much higher, but there are hundreds and hundreds of kids that kill it, and are up and coming athletes. Because the X Games only bring in a few skiers (like 20 something I think?) there is a much harder shot to get in, where as there are so few girl skiers that if you kill it, that it's sooo much easier to get yourself into the event. Idk, just my thoughts. Girls definitely kill it, just not as hard as the guys do.

I'm torn. Props to the girls, I know they are definitely ripping and pushing the sport. but as far as a business side, I'm not sure the money will really up the game that much. Must be an equal opportunity legal clause or something. there may be a few random chicks holding out for the money but that isn't too core IMO. I would guess any guy here would give a nut to compete in X regardless of the money. The supply and demand just isn't there for the for the girls... if anything there is more for girls slopestyle. I think it will have minimal effect in the long run... but maybe/hopefully we will be surprised

its not about being scared, it just doesn't make any sense. Can you imagine if they just made an all female x-games? Who the fuck would watch that. The women aren't as exciting, and don't generate the same amount of money/hype so why would they deserve equal prize money?

it's not like this is taking money away from the men's prize pool.

and this isnt some ski industry only core event where careful budgeting is necessary to keep it alive.

espn probably spends more on shaun white's hair prodcuts when they are filming all the soft backstory pieces leading up to the x games then they do on the total womens ski prize purse. its not like they can't afford it.

Forget about the level of skiing for a second. What I think many of you are not realizing is that it takes a lot of money to travel to an event like X, especially if you're from overseas. I'm going to use tennis as an example. Even a first round loser in the US Open gets $13,000, thus covering all of one's expenses (hotel, food, transportation, coaching, etc). And, yes, I know there is a lot more available money in tennis than in freeskiing. I know a lot of skiers, both male and female, who often won't do some major contests because they cannot afford to get there, especially if they know a podium chance is probably out of reach. Even sponsor travel budgets don't come close to covering this unless you're at the top of the game. More prize money ultimately means more opportunity for more skiers.

Why do you guys care so mucH? Its not like its your money, EXPN can do whatever they want with their own money.

I dont think they need to increase mens pay either, 25 g's for a days work is pretty fucking good I would say.

equal work equal pay, there's not as many women's competitors, meaning less competition, meaning higher chance of getting in the money.

but the winner of the women's superpipe still had to do the same amount of work as the winner of the men's during the competition.

regardless of how much tougher it is to get into the xgames as a guy, the prize is for the results of a single competition, not a reward based on the state of skiing in the world that winter.

this change makes it equal pay for equal work as opposed to before.

equal pay for equal work, are you kidding me. the average worker in the US works around 40 hours a week, does this mean we all make the same if we work a 40 hour week? equal pay for equal work, ha. name one girl that trains as hard as colby west, simon dumont, justin dorey, tanner hall, michaek clarke, sammy carlson and the list goes on....name one girl. how many edits have seen this fall of men/boys scrapping together snow to jib a 10ft rail? how many edits have you seen with girls doing this? I'LL ANSWER THIS ONE FOR YOU, ZERO! equal pay for equal work is bullshit. the pay should be based on talent and skill as in any normal job. oprah winfrey works 20 hours a week on her talk show and makes 350 million a year, luke van vanlin works over 20 hours a week at X and makes maybe $5,000. equal pay for equal work, ya right! pay should be based on talent and skill. quit making excuses for women, they don't have the skill and talent for X as men, thus they shouldn't be paid the same. and skier julie, forget the travel excuse, did you see the motorcross guy two years ago who hitch hiked with his moto bike to X? he had no budget, zero sponsors, and he made the voyage, all to try his double backflip. i've got a tip for you if you can't get to X, get a job in the summer. the trip should cost you a maximum of $1,500, unless you are living like a rockstar. $1,500 overseas is like $800.00 here. i can make and save $800.00 working at Wal Mart.

I don't think giving women equal pay is helping to progress this sport at all! What we need to do is kick our butts into gear and do better tricks, so we're worth watching and possibly get women's slopestyle into the x-games, that's the directions we should be working towards. money is good to have but I don't think women deserve it compared to the men and I'm saying this as a female freestyle skier!

WOW, if this thread is any indication of the class and intellect that is the future of freeride skiing I feel sick. I hope it isn't, I hope you are all just a bunch of pimple faced douche bags that don't ever amount to anything in skiing. You should all go and ski moguls and do aerials, I think you will find like minded people there.

Here's something to think about, do you think that tanner or simon should make less than any of the best alpine racers...or better yet, ping pong has a very large global population in it's competitive field, do you think Tanner and Simon should make less than those guys do? According to your "there are more men than girls" theory, that is precisely what you think. It takes the same amount of skill for someone to be the best at any sport, regardless of it's genre. In the end, who cares about you little pricks, they are pro skiers and you are 14 year old little twirps that just figured out that it feels good when you rub your mommys lotion on your ding dong.

Go get some ice rink snow and build a "kicker" for your "jib" and send that super sweet "edit" in...hopefully next year you'll make 1.5 million and be sponsored by target because of it.

how the fuck does more money in the x games result in the progression of girls skiing. anyone who cited that please explain that to me. and dont say oh so they can travel there, if you're going to x you have a legitimate travel budget or at least i hope you should.

fair enough.

my disproven logic aside, i still think that this is a good idea, and that it won't affect anybody except the women's prizewinners, and even then only in a good way.
