2008 - the year of the ACL. How do you strengthen your knee?

After reading all those threads like "I just tore my ACL" and so on i was wondering if there is anything you can do? like i know there is stuff to do to strengthen your back, but the knee?

last weekend i just about tore mine too so that was a wake-up call!

not sure if you can do s.th. for the ACL itself but would stronger muscles mean more support?

and guys, don't make shit up, only stuff doctors and rehab guys told you!

really, i thought this year was the first time somebody ever hurt his knee!?

no seriously i just thought it happened more often this year, and people have been calling it the year of the acl... i just kinda went with it

and what would be a great exercise?
 
it helps a little to have strong quads and hamstrings, but generally acl tears are just freak accidents. the acl is a very weak and fragile ligament so the slightest awkward movement can tear it. i tore mine by landing straight-legged doing a grab off a 15 foot table. sometimes the littlest things can cause an acl tear.
