2008 Choice: SUPERFAT

Easy Fellas,

Skied the Dynastar Legend Pro 186cm for the last 2 seasons in Whistler and Verbier... never been let down. Was thinking of buying another ski for the quiver and going for an all out superfat/spatula shaped tool wider than the pro... narrowed it down to these:

Dynastar Pro XXL

K2 Pontoon

K2 HellBent

Volkl Katana

Volkl Sumo

Armada ARG

Wondered if the Whistler knowledge, earnt by many a day in 50 cementimeters of heavy, wet, pow could advise me?

Really only been on the ARGs and Pontoons both are an excellent choice...I lean towards the ARGs but i think its because when i was on them the snow was alot better but cant go wrong with either just got to determine which suites ur skiing!

ARG's are pretty much the most inivative skis to come out in the last couple years, yes there has been a lot of change but come on just look at the shape... The pontoons are a really sick ski and seem really solid too but i would choose the ARG if ya got the cash

If you ski like me and just love to mess around in deep pow, you should look into Line EP Pro's. Superfat, early rise on tips, soft as all hell.

haha, the most innovative ski to come out in the past couple years is the volant spatula. it came out in 04 before the ARG and the Pontoon. That was one of the big take offs for pow sticks.

However, the aesthetically pleasing ARG is what I would get mainly because I'm not a fan of a stainless steel ski.

If you love the Legend Pro and have never been disappointed, toss the Hellbents and Pontoons out the window. They are too soft. The XXL and the Katana are both stiff, but traditionally shaped, and will probably ski like a little longer, little fatter version of your legend pro. I have no direct experience on the XXL, but I do on the Katana, and its a wicked ski. However for me, it would be an everyday ski, not a superfat.

There are so many options after that, but if you're limited to the Sumo or ARG I'd take the ARG (obviously biased). The Sumo is a big fat ski with a lot of sidecut, it will be fine on groomers and will be great in the pow, but you can do better. The ARG's shape is just so much more fun when you're in the pow. Also look into Lotus 120s, EHPs, Big Daddies (Pintail shapes), Lotus 138s and Praxis (spat/ARG shape) and the Moment Comi (supposed to be a hell of a fun traditional shaped ski). Definitely search over on TGR for reviews and info for those last ones. You'll find nothing here.

Icelantic makes HUGE skis, but i dont think that any are rockered/reversesidecut...you'd be the biggest baller out there with icelantics dude...

I agree with him. I rode the Prophet 130's last season and loved them. I plan on upgrading to the EP Pro this season because it about as wide as the 130, but also much more fun and suitable for the pow pow

Many thanks for the advice... much appreciated. I'm from the UK so only really clued up on the bigger manufacturers so willdefo look into the lotuses, praxis etc. How soft can the Pontoons be though, McKonkey appears to shred some serious white stuff...

not sure how long you wanna go but i'd look into EHP's for sure

check the latest freeskier or powder - both are 08 buyers guides

BAHAHAHA....Seriously? The Goat is not even in the same catagory as these other skis.

But I think the best options have been mentioned, ARG, Praxis, DP Lotus, EHP...The Prophet 130 is also a great ski for the deep, but is a traditional sidecut ski...I agree that if you've been on Legend Pro's and liked them, the Hellbent, Pontoon and EP Pro that someone mentioned will be too soft, unless you want to go softer for a superfat...if you do, that's fine, just be aware that those 3 skis are alot softer than your LP's are.

I've only flexed the Pontoons, but they flex INCREDIBLY soft, one of the softest skis I have ever hand-flexed. The design may allow them to be useful despite this, people certainly charge on them. Both the Pontoons and the Hellbents are serious noodles, I would be a bit scared straightlining something on the toons, although people are certainly able to do it.

hellbents kill it all over, i was on them in argentina and i have to say they were fun everywhere on the mt. rockered skis are so sick, but i have to say that is the only rockered ski ive tried so i guess im not the best person to ask

coming from whistler and being a lover of superfats i say stay away from hellbents, ep pros, any super soft skis. if you liked the legends you will hate these.

I skied the args and wasn't that impressed. for what you lossed in versatility you didnt gain much in pow goodness. I own prophet 130s and those were way nicer in pow. args are nice for trees i guess.

a few friends have skied the katanas and loved them. not the stiffest but a great ski.

prophet 130s are dope and this years have minimal rocker in the nose. I will see how that feels in a while.

a buddy rode for dynastar and was always on the legend pros. he was quite anti superfat, but then got some XXLs. not THAT fat but straight as hell and wide enough. he ended up using them most of the time. i think its a good balance of superfat and chargability

good idea with the rocker, hasn't been mentioned yet...

I think the x wing lab looks interesting too: 198, straight, stiff, fat...

i'd wait a year to see how the new salomons perform though.

i'd say thugs are a bit too conventional a shape for what he's looking for.

dude, give Birdos a look. www.birdos.com

they make the three shapes on the site, plus custom for ya, have custom graphics and flexes, plus they're based out of andermatt, suisse, so would cost less to ship to blighty than the us ones. i can vouch for their performance, my bro rides the 11 and the ghetto chicken and they're super bomber skis.

thugs are too conventional and xwing labs arent? wheres the logic there? the labs arent that stiff of a ski, however salomons usually ski stiffer than they flex

I wanted some of those so bad, but couldn't afford them, so I ended up with Prophet 130s...I like the hot pink and black colors better than that green though.

haha, yeah tell me about it! i think the puders and ghetto chickens have the best graphics ever, and man do they ski sick!

and hemlock^^ i think the xwing labs are pretty unconventional. dude, they're 198 one length only. thats pretty different nowadays...

Deff super sick but damn exspencive, but its really cool that you can pretty much make the exact ski you want

yeah, i kinda except your point, its conventionally shaped i agree, but it is enormous. its the first big company >110, >190ish ski to be made so i do think it deserves to be sen as pioneering...

idk, maybe not i just can't wait to see abma and co charging on it!

198

140-107-120

it doesn't make sense to me that the radius is 10.30m...

surely thats impossible give its dimensions?

For skiing in the PNW and our heavy snow I personaly like stiffer sticks. After skiing the Legend pros I would say that you would find the EP pros, Hellbents, and Pontoons too soft. Like what was said the XXL's should ski like a bigger version of the Pro's. I plan on getting them for this year as my big mountain powder/charging ski. The Volkl Katana would also be a great choice for heavier snow. If you are really looking to charge I would try and stay away from a big tail rocker. This is because if you land back seat your skis will tend to wash out from under you. Get your self a nice stiff, flat or conventional, tail for charging. Other options that would fit in with these skis would be the 4frnt EHP (though it is on the skinnier side) and the Salomon rocker (I think the tail is flat). If you are looking for a more lade back style go with a softer ski, rocker could be fun in here. The EP pros, ARG's the other pollard promodels, those two heavy k2's, all would be a bit more focused for softer more lade back skiing. But if you do go with a rocker just remember it will be a lot slower on hardpack.
