winter.steve its not that I dont want to have more money or recognition in the sport, but look at what it did to snowboarding. it just took away from the appeal and fun. everytime i go down a mountain im skiing past asians, and little kids, and everyone on snowboards---people who arent meant to snowboard are there. Its ruining the mountain and its not fun to sit in a park behind 20 people who just rented a board and think they can hit a 30 foot table. Its just not cool. I dont wanna go down a mountain and sit behind 20 more people with twin tips. If they were good---fine, but you know its gonna be people doing the "cool thing to do"

^ I agree. It will become "cool". We have WSI and the Xgames, and the Xgames are already sucking. The UOC is way too static a body to deal with the ever changing flow of skiing. I say nay.

snowboarding hasnt changed, the only thing is that the riders get more recognition and paid a lot better for what they do even if they arent winning the X. I mean look at the snowboard mags, there are like 7-8 different mags, that means a lot more snowboarders get to have their photos published even if their names arent jp walker. This means that the talent pool is much bigger and gives the chance to a lot more snowboarders to make a living. All of this is in part thanks to the HUGE coverage that the olympics, x-games or whatever comp gives to the world outside of the snowboard community. After all, would you rather see a baseball player make millions while david crichton makes not even 1/8 of that, but he is actually risking his life and abviously doing something much more sick! think about it.

 
It can bring both good and bad as all the people before me have said but one point I 100% agree with is the one freezeskier97 made. I remeber when snowboarding wasnt huge and the people that did it were doing it right and thats whats going on with skiing, the people that are out there doing it are going at a good pace and doing it right. I absolutely hate shooting down a blue at the end of the day and having to nearly kill myself stopping after being suprised to find 30 asians sitting in the middle of a run right under a hill that hides them right before you get to them. There was this case here in BC a few years back when this asian got on a snowboard for the first time, saw it at the X-games and the olympics, thought it was easy, went to the superpipe, yes superpipe, and ended up breaking is back and now hes in a wheelchair. Thats one thing I never want skiing to become, the centre of attention in a bad case of misuse of equipment just cause someone idiot, asian or whatever, saw it at the x-games or even bigger at the olympics.

 
Im not saying there arent idiots in skiing now but do you find groups of skiers sitting in the middle of runs doing nothing?? I never ever have and hopefully never ever will cause if I ever find, and hopefully I never do, a group of rich asians or anyone for that matter who dont know what theyre doing sitting in the middle of a run with like k2s, lines, armadas, and dynastars ill feel that the sport is going downhill, and going down fast.

 
i think it might be good for skiing to be in the olympics, if it doesnt change things. but if we have to sacrafice our style and the soul of freesking, and we all end up (like freeskier97 said) stuck behind people because they think its now "the cool" thing to do, screw the olympics. i mean, sure more money into the industry is great and all, but where i ski (in the midwest) the park is already 1/2 full of little kids who ski/board there because they want to look cool and people who wouldnt give a penny to see the sports progress. all they want is to look cool infront of their little friends. and if the olympics will increase the amount of people going into the park just to sit around and be there - to be there - not really supporting the sport at heart, id rather not have freesking involved in the olympics.

and to whoever said snowboarding hasnt changed - the sport itself hasnt, maybe it has progressed some because of all the media and magnitude of the olympics, but how many kids do u see nowadays in the park, just sitting there, doing nothing except getting in peoples way, pissing off people who want to be there to progress themeselves and sometimes, making boarders look bad because of the idiotic attitudes some people take (not that skiing doesnt have those people as well...) anyway, yeah..

X-games? U.S. Open? the judging sucked ass. none of the judges took style into account. Except for gangiers slope run in winter X. but thats it.

half pipe in the olympics would be one of the best things that could happen to the sport. yes, it would publicize the sport. yes, it would bring in more money for the sport. the freeskiing heads of state would just need to make sure the sport keeps getting pushed in the right direction and that the olympic committee doesn't fuck it up like they did to moguls for a while.

I like the fact that freeskiing is just, in reality, a relatively small community. Go to a lot of the smaller -non resort hills- and guys(and girls) with twintips will understand eachother almost immediately.. i don't want it to get to rich or watered down, what's wrong with a modest community?

if there are all these people on the hill, who are skiing, and they are doing it only cause they saw it in the olympics, more power to them and our sport. lets say they see T in whistler goin big on some armadas. then those tourists see his skis and go buy a pair. they are helping out the movement. so all these new people go out and buy skis and clothing and whatever, from those companies who are pushing skiing right now, and then those companies make more money, and more sick products that all of you can then buy, and since if supply and demand go up price goes down, now you will all be paying lower prices for the hot shit you buy now

yeah...but concluding that the price of armadas will drop is quite the leap of faith. i would argue that even if our industry explodes, due to exposure from an olympic event, and many more units are moved, armada would keep the price of skis where theyre at now. it cheapens a brand's image if they drop prices for no reason, and of all companies, armada wouldnt stand for that.

and secondly, if all you want from the hypothetical situation of skiing making it as an olympic event is for the price of gear to drop...well then dude, thats flat out greed.

im not choosing sides here, just pointing out a flaw in your reasoning.

If skiing is in the olympics then it will be just as glorified as snoboarding. thats a bad thing becaus eyou get people who are just on the band wagon.

 
yeah that was just an added point. and yeah prices might not fluctuate that much, but who knows what the rate on inflation will be from now till then any way. but on the money front if more people are skiing or even snowboarding, that means that there are more tickets sold, and if a resort sells more tix, the prices might stop rising all the time.

however....

my point is that if more people are skiing. then that is a good thing. even if they suck. the key is that the industry needs to take a path in which skiing stays "cool". whatever that is... or in the same idea as other x games sports that are mainstream are still looked at differently than say football. the athletes are still considered core or whatever, and that is the way it should stay. mainstream core...the trend

if skiing is to have a big decent future then it needs to be exposed to the rest of the world. snowboarding blew up because of the olympics. when i try to explain what types of skiing we do people get confused. i hear it all the time, "oh so you do aerials?", "oh so you do moguls?". NO!! those two sports are tainting skiing as it is. we need to have halfpipe in the olympics so peoples eyes can get opened. so people can see that we're right along side of snowboarding, doing what they do. it would bring a lot of good things into the sport. yes, it might bring some bad things in as well, but in the overall, skiing would benefit greatly.

 
if we really want skiing to be a non-lame alternative to snowboarding, there needs to be more exposure. if this is the only way to get that exposure, then it might as well happen.skiing needs to establish itself in the public's eye, otherwise its growth will be stunted at least a little bit.

Im going to use offtrail as my reference here! Along with other production and skiing compaines!! They work their ass off each year to provide us with sick gear and insane footage. With more exposure these people who have been dedicatedto the movement long b4 olympic halfpipe stand to gain the most. Which is completely deserved on their part.

All it would mean is more mags and possibly longer and mor einsane movies with a bigger budget. Yes their will be more so called posers and gapers but thats inevitable. IT is already happening at a slow rate why not make it a BOOM and gain sumthin from it in the present instead of waiting a few more years!!

I'm split because if we get into the olympics then the industry gets a huge ass boost it will be the cool thing to do more people more money right? but on the other hand I like the idea of staying small and not letting other people in which i very closed minded but most of the people who i know that ski are chill and there's a small group of us and i like the fact that they aren't huge roaming groups of skiers but i could be wrong just my take on things
