2005/2006 NS Update discussion

Hey guys,

Newschoolers will once again be updated over the summer. We will be fixing the video and picture sections, cults, reviews and articles.

Among the changes are:

  • Next & Back buttons for pictures
  • Videos will load in the NS window (you can still download them)
  • Cults will have better member management features. We also want to host some cult related games over the winter.
  • Reviews and articles will have better rating systems so the best member content will get better exposure.

I also wish to do some changes to the forums. Among those are:



  • Fix quoting by letting you select a section to quote.
  • Fix My Threads to load threads that have been moved.

Does anybody have any comments they would like to make about changes to any of these sections?

I like the donator idea cause the donators forum really is dead. Maybe there should be special perks for the people who hvae been here longer becuase if special perks are made for having over a certain number of posts people are just going to post like crazy to get over that number.

how about privilages for people who arn't bitches, cause that would cut down the numbers too. first of all, that includes most of the older members, second of all, that includes the newer people (like myself) who are on here for the right reasons, and don't post just for shits, with out contributing. And what would consist of cult games? Cause PPP could give some people a run for their money.

Revamp the Search tool. hopefully people will use it more, and it'll be more effective.

also maybe a way to adjust the list of "my cults" so you can put the more used cults at the top of the page and the lesser used cults at the bottem

A definite revamping of the search tool, even if it's just putting it back to the way it was before.

Also to what extent are you modifying the cults? Is the rumour of the Grandmasters having mod priviledges over their cults true?

cant you somehow implement a google or yahoo search into the site instead of trying to rebuild the entire search engien yourself?

Harvey goes on Newschoolers and checks out all of the improvements. We bombard him with questions/praisings. We all do a Harvey Dance, that will be made by the members. We also create a chant.

i don't know if I like the edit idea. If you spell something wrong, most of the time people know what you mean. And the editing would get abused by some people. Stupid things like they would make a thread, called "who likes skiing" or something like that. Then a billion people would answer, Then they would edit the thread to say "who loves Michael Jackson" and then there would be a whole thread about jackson lovers. I can see it right now. The thing about simplicity is that there are less things to go wrong. That's why NS is good. It's simple. And definatly no Emoticons

^can one of you direct me to a forum with this "karma system"? i mean i get the concept of how it works, but obviously if anyone can give out karma points (or penalize karma points for that matter) then it defeats the purpose. who determines who gets karma points and how does it work exactly?

the forums at www.overgrow.com is probably the best example of the karma system. it works very well.

that's why you can only edit the post, and not the title of the thread itself. i post on another board that has post editing and nobody abuses it, and it's a far more populated site than NS.

This forum is a good example of a karma system and a post edit (and paying member benefits for that matter):

The karma system here is the green or red buttons under the person’s username.

After you have made a post, you are aloud 30 minutes to edit. After that, its locked from your modification.

if you did anything based on post count, people would just spam the shit outa everything to get it up.

i like the pictures in signatures though, but they would have to be really small.

Also, I dont know what the situation is at the moment, but when people join, can we make them agree not only to the Terms & Conditions, but also a seperate rule saying they will use the search bar before posting questions.

We need to hammer it in to them as much as possible - use the search bar!

Looking at that soccer website, the karma stuff looks pretty good.

i see.....overgrow was constipated for some reason so i couldn't browse it too easily, but that soccer site gave me a good idea (the karma stuff are those little green bars correct?)

if anyone wants to see why we shouldn't have pics in our sigs, go to www.dogsonacid.com because that shit is ridiculous....they give you the option of turning them off though, which i definitely do....

the smilies really don't get on my nerves on that site, but it would be way different on here

ive been thinking about a respect/kerma thing for a long time. But knowing the fuckers on this site it would get so abused. Editing should show the origional and the edited post just to make things clear. A NS history education course should be mandatory. I hate the kids who say "Who is this guy Harvey anyway, what has he ever done?"

I dont really understand how that karma thing works. because, like whoever that was that said it earlier, it would get super abbused by everyone on this site if thats how it worked. maybe if it was the mods who controlled it, it would still be better, but i still dont know. its a good idea i just dont know how much i trust it.

yeah it seems weird. obviously everyone can't dispense karma or it wouldn't work. but if the mods/admins are the only people who can do it, then that's not cool either. i'm guessing that only people with really good karma can give others better karma, and if karma had been there since the beginning of the site it would work fine, but incorporating it into a place as established as NS?

i didnt notice this anywhere else on this thread, but i think that a next topic link would be good for the forums. like while you are in the "hey whats up" thread and you want to go to the "thoughts of a dying atheist" thread (which is next in line) you just click next topic instead of going back to nonski gabber then to the thread.
