2001: a space odyssey

hmmmm. all i know is if you use pink floyd echoes off of meddle and start it when the movie says beyond the infinite... its fuckin trippy... and ill say best sci-fi movie ever

but really.,.. its just saying no matter how much sicence or how much faith we have... we are really fuckin small!

No. Sure, there's about 20 minutes of conversation in the movie, the rest being silence or music. Sure, the amount of action is near zero. But you still HAVE to conceed that the movie is awesome. The first and the last scenes are purely amazing, and HAL, even if he never moves, captivates by being one hell of an antagonist. I'm sorry, but 2001 is incredible, and if you think it sucks, well perhaps you didn't understand fully its plot.

It was beautiful, mind blowing, and incredible but it was a tad bit boring.

I'm not going to lie, I almost dozed off during the extended sequence of oddities after they reached Jupiter.

However I thoroughly enjoyed the entire segment with HAL, it was both interesting, epic, and less mind boggling (more grounded in reality than the beginning or end of the movie.)

Yeah! thats my favorite song, and i've heard about it syncing up with the movie pretty well but never tried it myself.

It's a bizzare, yet very beautiful and amazing movie. Albeit there are times when it is a tad boring, but then again, I only notice that if it's late at night. Otherwise, it is visually captivating, as is the music.

It's complex, and I know I'm not the only one with this view, but aside from being a statement, the movie (as well as the books) revolves around the monoliths and shows the development of man.

The first instance the monolith appears is with the Dawn of Man, which creates a more sophisticated man - essentially akin to Homo Habilis (using tools and the like)? eh. The second instance is with TMA 1 (or whatever number it was) on the moon - so now man is more advanced; seeking answers and traveling. The third instance is with Big Brother out by Jupiter. Now man can travel through time (or whatever fuckin happened). The fourth and final instance is creating life. Now I'm not sure what happened there at the end with star child and all that, but its clear Bowman was aging, then reborn. Its crazy, but damn it sticks.

Of course there is also the link with technology and life. We rely on it, and utilize it, to the point where it, too, becomes life almost. We also have the power to destroy it, much like those apes did (a bit of a stretch but I don't know).

definitely one of the best movies out there.

I saw it as the monolith representing whatever it was that created intelligent human beings, whatever you want to call it, God, aliens, or whatever and it appears when a doorway or portal opens when all the planets are in alignment. When they found it on the moon it sent out a signal out to Jupiter so they go to investigate it and when the guy encounters it he goes through a transformation, like when the apes encounter it, and evolves into the "star child" or the next evolution of man.

oh yeah - "getting it" wasn't the point of the movie either. the point was to get people engaged into what they THINK it means. there is no right or wrong with this movie.

Arthur C. Clark, the author of the story that the movie is based on, said, "If you understand 2001 completely, we failed. We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered."

jahahahaha i remmeber our teacher in like grade 5 showed us that movie and expected us to draw conclusions from it...thats some intellectual shit your giving to a pile of kids...i think im thinking of the right movie...its the one with the apes around that huge black prism and their like WTFFFF to it

One of the main themes is the relationship between man and technology. the ape uses the bone(a tool=technology)to kill the other ape the next scene it skips forward to up right humans. sorry I havent watched it in a while or I would point out other stuff but yeah good movie. If you liked it you should read the book Childhood's End.
