15k compared to 20k

Is there a large noticeable difference between 15k waterproof/breath-ability and 20k waterproof/breath-ability? Also how damaging is it to wash snow pants in the washing machine and hang-dry them? I've heard it removes the waterproofing.

there is a difference but chances are you won't notice it. Unless you live somewhere super wet IE PNW. I live in CO and Ive had 10k for most of my life and never gotten wet. the snow is drier here however. Washing pants is fine but it will remove waterproofing over time. An easy fix is to buy some tech wash by nikwax or something similar. It waterproofs as it washes.
